We first present why this issue is complex through an analysis of the differences that can be encountered between networks. We also present different criteria, tools and approaches used for network matching. We then propose a matching process, named NetMatcher. This process is a several steps process looking for potential candidates and then analysing them in order to determine the final results. It relies on the comparison of geometrical, attributive, and topological properties of objects. It determines one-to-many links between networks: in particular a node of the less detailed network can be matched to several arcs and nodes forming a complex junction in the most detailed network. An important strength of the process is to self-evaluate its results through the comparison of topological organisation of networks. This paves the way to an interactive editing of the results. The NetMatcher process has been intensively tested on a wide range of actual datasets, thus highlighting its effectiveness as well as its limits. [Termes IGN] toponymeRésumé : (Auteur) A digital gazetteer (DG) is a spatial dictionary of named and typed places in some environment, typically the near-surface of the Earth. DGs are proliferating in number and sophistication with the popularity of location-based services such as GoogleEarth, MapQuest, and OnStar. The essential utility of a DG is to translate between formal and informal systems of place referencing, i.e. between the ad hoc names and qualitative type classifications assigned to places, on the one hand, and quantitative locations for them, on the other. Frequently, it is necessary to consult and combine results from multiple sources of gazetteer data, which is tedious for humans and currently not done by machines. Thus, a fundamental challenge with DGs is conflation: merging gazetteer data so that place identity is preserved. The challenge can be met using a computational approach modelled on human behaviour, focusing first on places' geometries (since disjoint places cannot be the same), second on their type categories, and finally on their names. This article details a troika of metrics that mimic the human cognitive process, together with operational procedures for automated conflation of DG data using them. By way of demonstration, both abstract and practical results of conflation for the Lake Tahoe Basin of California and Nevada are presented. They have been growing in importance recently as the basis of a range of services, including way-finding, georeferencing, and intelligence. This introduction to the following collection of five research papers expands on contemporary applications of digital gazetteers, explores the issues associated with each of the three types of information, and defines three broad areas of research: the components of gazetteers; the process by which places are named and evolve; and the issues of interoperability between digital gazetteers. Each area is represented by at least one paper in the collection. Digital gazetteers increasingly form the interface between the informal discourse of humans and the formal world of geographic information science. Conflating these maps and imagery can create images that combine the visual appeal of imagery with the attribution information from maps. The existing systems require human intervention to conflate maps with imagery. We present a novel approach that utilizes vector datasets as “glue” to automatically conflate street maps with imagery. First, our approach extracts road intersections from imagery and maps as control points. Then, it aligns the two point sets by computing the matched point pattern. Finally, it aligns maps with imagery based on the matched pattern. The experiments show that our approach can conflate various maps with imagery, such that in our experiments on TIGER-maps covering part of St. Louis county, MO, 85.2% of the conflated map roads are within 10.8 m from the actual roads compared to 51.7% for the original and georeferenced TIGER-map roads. The proposed scheme comprises three major steps: (a) the preprocessing of lidar point clouds and vector maps, (b) roof analysis, and (c) building reconstruction. During the preprocessing stage, the building polygons are first obtained from the polylines, followed by the selections of lidar points in the building polygons. An irregular triangulated network is then built to represent the facets. The segmentation of planar facets for roof analysis is implemented by examining the patch size and the facet orientation. The interior 3D roof edges are then determined from the intersection of the roof planes. Finally, the building models are reconstructed through regularization. Two sample sites are tested for the purposes of validation. The experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme allows for high fidelity and accuracy, provided that the point cloud density is enough.
