Traditionally, conflation is being carefully carried out and evaluated by experts. Yet there are practices that involve occasional users who will look up the information in mobile devices without the intention of keeping a copy. Evaluation will be carried out with different criteria, involving the Human Visual System and perhaps even the characteristics of the physical devices as well. In this paper, we coin the term ‘Ephemeral Conflation’ to characterize that context and the procedures to evaluate it. [Termes IGN] pouvoir de résolution géométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) The structural characteristics of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data are increasingly used to classify urban environments at fine scales, but have been underutilized for distinguishing heterogeneous land covers over large urban regions due to high cost, limited spectral information, and the computational difficulties posed by inherently large data volumes. Here we explore tradeoffs between potential gains in mapping accuracy with computational costs by integrating structural and intensity surface models extracted from LiDAR data with Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery and evaluating the degree to which TM, LiDAR, and LiDAR-TM fusion data discriminated land covers in the rapidly urbanizing region of Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. Using supervised maximum likelihood (ML) and classification tree (CT) methods, we classified TM data at 30 m and LiDAR data and LiDAR-TM fusions at 1 m, 5 m, 10 m, 15 m and 30 m resolutions. We assessed the relative contributions of LiDAR structural and intensity surface models to classification map accuracy and identified optimal spatial resolution of LiDAR surface models for large-area assessments of urban land cover. ML classification of 1 m LiDAR-TM fusions using both structural and intensity surface models increased total accuracy by 32% compared to LiDAR alone and by 8% over TM at 30 m. Fusion data using all LiDAR surface models improved class discrimination of spectrally similar forest, farmland, and managed clearings and produced the highest total accuracies at 1 m, 5 m, and 10 m resolutions (87.2%, 86.3% and 85.4%, respectively). At all resolutions of fusion data and using either ML or CT classifier, the relative contribution of the LiDAR structural surface models (canopy height and normalized digital surface model) to classification accuracy is greater than the intensity surface. Our evaluation of tradeoffs between data volume and thematic map accuracy for this study system suggests that a spatial resolution of 5 m for LiDAR surface models best balances classification performance and the computational challenges posed by large-area assessments of land cover. [Termes IGN] ontologieRésumé : (Auteur) This article describes results from a research project undertaken to explore the technical issues associated with integrating unstructured crowd sourced data with authoritative national mapping data. The ultimate objective is to develop methodologies to ensure the feature enrichment of authoritative data, using crowd sourced data. Users increasingly find that they wish to use data from both kinds of geographic data sources. Different techniques and methodologies can be developed to solve this problem. In our previous research, a position map matching algorithm was developed for integrating authoritative and crowd sourced road vector data, and showed promising results (Anand et al. 2010). However, especially when integrating different forms of data at the feature level, these techniques are often time consuming and are more computationally intensive than other techniques available. To tackle these problems, this project aims at developing a methodology for automated conflict resolution, linking and merging of geographical information from disparate authoritative and crowd-sourced data sources. This article describes research undertaken by the authors on the design, implementation, and evaluation of algorithms and procedures for producing a coherent ontology from disparate geospatial data sources. To integrate road vector data from disparate sources, the method presented in this article first converts input data sets to ontologies, and then merges these ontologies into a new ontology. This new ontology is then checked and modified to ensure that it is consistent. The developed methodology can deal with topological and geometry inconsistency and provide more flexibility for geospatial information merging. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) This paper integrates light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data and topographic maps and predicts the quality of 3D building model reconstruction. In this paper, the tensor voting algorithm and a region-growing method are adopted to extract building roof planes and structural lines from LiDAR data, and a robust least squares method is applied to register LiDAR data with building outlines obtained from topographic maps. The minimal square sum of the separations of the most peripheral points to building outlines is adopted as the criterion for determining the transformation parameters in order to improve the efficiency of data fusion. After registration, a novel quality indicator of data fusion based on the tensor analysis of residuals is derived in order to evaluate the quality of the automatic reconstruction of 3D building models. Finally, an actual LiDAR data set and its corresponding topographic map demonstrate the fusion procedure and the quality of the predictions related to automatic model reconstruction.
