[Termes IGN] turbidité des eauxRésumé : (Auteur) The remote sensing of Case 2 water has been far less successful than that of Case 1 water, due mainly to the complex interactions among optically active substances (e.g., phytoplankton, suspended sediments, colored dissolved organic matter, and water) in the former. To address this problem, we developed a spectral decomposition algorithm (SDA), based on a spectral linear mixture modeling approach. Through a tank experiment, we found that the SDA-based models were superior to conventional empirical models (e.g. using single band, band ratio, or arithmetic calculation of band) for accurate estimates of water quality parameters. In this paper, we develop a method for applying the SDA to Landsat-5 TM data on Lake Kasumigaura, a eutrophic lake in Japan characterized by high concentrations of suspended sediment, for mapping chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and non-phytoplankton suspended sediment (NPSS) distributions. The results show that the SDA-based estimation model can be obtained by a tank experiment. Moreover, by combining this estimation model with satellite-SRSs (standard reflectance spectra : i.e., spectral endmembers) derived from biooptical modeling, we can directly apply the model to a satellite image. The same SDA-based estimation model for Chl-a concentration was applied to two Landsat-5 TM images, one acquired in April 1994 and the other in February 2006. The average Chl-a estimation error between the two was 9.9%, a result that indicates the potential robustness of the SDA-based estimation model. The average estimation error of NPSS concentration from the 2006 Landsat-5 TM image was 15.9%. The key point for successfully applying the SDA-based estimation model to satellite data is the method used to obtain a suitable satellite-SRS for each end-member. [Termes IGN] Virginie (Etats-Unis)Résumé : (Auteur) Feature reduction in a remote sensing dataset is often desirable to decrease the processing time required to perform a classification and improve overall classification accuracy. This paper introduces a feature reduction method based on the singular value decomposition (SVD). This SVD-based feature reduction method reduces the storage and processing requirements of the SVD by utilizing a training dataset. This feature reduction technique was applied to training data from two multitemporal datasets of Landsat TM/ETM+ imagery acquired over a forested area in Virginia, USA and Rondônia, Brazil. Subsequent parallel iterative guided spectral class rejection (pIGSCR) forest/non-forest classifications were performed to determine the quality of the feature reduction. The classifications of the Virginia data were five times faster using SVD-based feature reduction without affecting the classification accuracy. Feature reduction using the SVD was also compared to feature reduction using principal components analysis (PCA). The highest average accuracies for the Virginia dataset (88.34%) and for the Rondônia dataset (93.31%) were achieved using the SVD. The results presented here indicate that SVD-based feature reduction can produce statistically significantly better classifications than PCA. Particularly in the area of information space (re)construction, however, there is a need for inverse solutions; i.e., finding weights that result in regions with predefined area ratios. In this paper, we formulate an adaptive Voronoi solution and propose a raster-based optimization method for finding the associated weight set. The solution consists of a combination of simple, fixed-point iteration with an optional spatial resolution refinement along the regions’ boundaries using quadtree decomposition. We present the corresponding algorithm and its complexity analysis. The method is successfully tested on a series of ideal–typical cases and the interactions between the adaptive technique and boundary resolution refinement are explored and assessed. Note de contenu : 1 - PRINCIPE DU RADAR POLARIMETRIQUE

[Termes IGN] valeur radiométriqueRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose to prove the importance of the application of blind sources separation methods on remote sensing data. Indeed, satellite images are represented by radiometric values where each one is considered as a mixture of different sources. The primary goal of our research is to hand back the different sources covering the scanned zone. The main constraint to restore these sources is to take our observation images as a mixture of physically independent components. In our work, the independence between the different sources is obtained through two statistical methods. The first method is based on the reduction of the spatial source correlations, and the second one is based on the joint maximization of the fourth-order cumulants. On the opposite of the original multispectral images that are represented according to correlated axes, the source images extracted from the proposed algorithms are represented according to mutually independent axes that allow each source to represent specifically a certain type of land cover. This increases the reliability of the analysis and the interpretation of the scanned zone. The source images obtained from the application of the sources separation method give a more effective representation of the information contained on the observation images. The performance of these source images is investigated through an application for the decomposition of mixed pixels. The originality of our application comes from the determination of the mixing matrix modeling the spectral endmembers based on source filters. These filters model the sensibility of each source channel according to the different spectral bands, which give an interesting information about the spectral theme represented by the corresponding source image. This application shows that the proportions of the different land cover types existing into the pixel are better estimated through the source images than through the original multispectral images. This method could offer an interesting solution to mixed-pixel classification.
