The analysis revealed a more rapid rate of spectral signal recovery than what was found in previous investigations in boreal and temperate forests. Context: The rate of post-disturbance vegetation recovery is an important component of forest dynamics. Aims: In this study, we analyze the recovery of the spectral signal from forest clearcut areas in Mediterranean conditions when the coppice system of forest management is applied. Methods:
We used LTS surface reflectance data (1999–2015). We generated an annual reference database of clearcuts using visual interpretation and local forest inventory data, and then derived the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) spectral trajectories for these clearcuts. From these spectral trajectories, we calculated the Years to Recovery or Y2R, the number of years it takes for a pixel to return to within a specified threshold (i.e., 70%, 80%, 90%, 100%) of its pre-disturbance value. Spectral recovery rates were then corroborated using measures of canopy height derived from airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. Results: The coppice system is associated with rapid recovery rates when compared to rates of recovery from seeds or seedlings in temperate and boreal forest conditions. We found that the Y2R derived from the spectral trajectories of post-clearcut NBR and NDVI provided similar characterizations of rapid recovery for the coppice system of forest management applied in our study area. The ALS measures of canopy height indicated that the Y2R metric accurately captured the rapid regeneration of coppice systems. Conclusion: The rapid rate of spectral recovery associated with the coppice system is 2–4 years, which contrasts with values reported in boreal and temperate forest environments, where spectral recovery was attained in approximately 10 years. [Termes descripteurs IGN] rétrodiffusion de BraggRésumé : (auteur) In this article, we propose a polarimetric calibration (PolCal) algorithm to estimate the system crosstalk, cross-polarization (x-pol), and co-polarization (co-pol) channel imbalance (CI) when ground corner reflectors (CRs) are unavailable. The current PolCal process requires at least one trihedral CR to determine the co-pol CI. However, the deployment of ground CRs is costly and may even be impossible in some areas. To calibrate a polarimetric image without CRs, our proposed method automatically extracts the volume-dominated and Bragg-like pixels as a reference to estimate the crosstalk, x-pol, and co-pol CI values. Then, a first-order polynomial model is exploited to fit the co-pol CI to further improve calibration accuracy. In the experimental section, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method with data from two of China’s newly developed very high-resolution systems. The experiments confirmed that the proposed workflow can be considered as a feasible calibration scheme when the ground deployment of CRs is impossible, and it is also an effective analysis tool for the assessment of calibrated products. [Termes descripteurs IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (auteur) This article examined the spectral interference by heavy metal on the spectral signal of moisture content of heavy metal contaminated soils. Soil samples were collected from an abandoned mine area, and the chemical analysis revealed extremely high contamination amount of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb). The mineralogical analysis showed that the spectral signature of the heavy metal contaminated soils was manifested by secondary minerals. Water content suppressed the spectral reflectance of the soil samples but increased the absorption depths. Although a regression model can predict moisture content using the magnitude of the water absorption feature, the accuracy was much lower when the heavy metal concentration was extremely high. It indicates that geochemical reactions between the heavy metal cation and iron oxide/clay minerals may have affected the spectral responses of the contaminated soils at the water absorption bands. Our model also showed that there was a shift of the absorption features of moisture content if the heavy metal contamination level went up. Unlike normal soils, the absorption features of clay minerals and ferric iron were not able to accurately predict moisture in highly contaminated soils. Given the fact that the spectral bands selected in this article were associated with water absorption, the findings from this article may only be useful to a drone-based low-altitude remote sensing of soil moisture content. [Termes descripteurs IGN] traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (Auteur) In Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) using L-band frequencies, the ionosphere causes signal delays that correspond with link related range errors of up to 100 m. In a first order approximation the range error is proportional to the total electron content (TEC) of the ionosphere. Whereas this first order range error can be corrected in dual-frequency measurements by a linear combination of carrier phase- or code-ranges of both frequencies, single-frequency users need additional information to mitigate the ionospheric error. This information can be provided by TEC maps deduced from corresponding GNSS measurements or by ionospheric models. In this paper we discuss and compare different ionospheric correction methods for single-frequency users. The focus is on the comparison of the positioning quality using dual-frequency measurements, the Klobuchar model, the NeQuick model, the IGS TEC maps, the Neustrelitz TEC Model (NTCM-GL) and the reconstructed NTCM-GL TEC maps both provided via the ionosphere data service SWACI (http://swaciweb.dlr.de) in near real-time. For that purpose, data from different locations covering several days in 2011 and 2012 are investigated, including periods of quiet and disturbed ionospheric conditions. In applying the NTCM-GL based corrections instead of the Klobuchar model, positioning accuracy improvements up to several meters have been found for the European region in dependence on the ionospheric conditions. Further in mid- and low-latitudes the NTCM-GL model provides results comparable to NeQuick during the considered time periods. Moreover, in regions with a dense GNSS ground station network the reconstructed NTCM-GL TEC maps are partly at the same level as the final IGS TEC maps. [Termes descripteurs IGN] variabilitéRésumé : (Auteur) The effects of signal contamination of secondary data are investigated in the framework of adaptive target detection in remotely sensed hyperspectral images. In contrast to previous studies on signal contamination, the focus of this paper is the detection of targets with unknown spectral signatures (i.e., anomalies) and adaptive detection methods based on a local estimation of the background covariance matrix. Contamination due to the target signal is expected to have a more severe impact when the number of secondary data is limited. An analytical model for signal contamination is developed that allows variability in the extent of contamination. Several parameters, such as the contamination fraction of secondary data and the contaminating signal energy, are introduced, and a contaminating signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is derived as an objective measure of contamination. The proposed model is employed to experimentally evaluate signal contamination effects and the impact of its variability on the performance of adaptive detection of local anomalies. The outcomes of the experimental study are substantiated by validation with real hyperspectral data. The results obtained highlight the relevance that the impact of signal contamination, assessed with respect to different system parameters, may have for practical applications. This paper represents a starting point for the development of detection performance forecasting models that consider signal contamination.
