[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) The k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) method of forest attribute estimation and mapping has become an integral part of national forest inventory methods in Finland in the last decade. This success of kNN method in facilitating multisource inventory has encouraged trials of the method in the Great Lakes Region of the United States. Here we present results from applying the method to Landsat TM and ETM+ data and land cover data collected by the USDA Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. In 1999, the FIA program in the state of Minnesota moved to a new annual inventory design to reach its targeted full sampling intensity over a 5-year period. This inventory design also utilizes a new 4-subplot cluster plot configuration. Using this new plot design together with 1 year of field plot observations, the kNN classification of forest/nonforest/water achieved overall accuracies ranging from 87% to 91%. Our analysis revealed several important behavioral features associated with kNN classification using the new FIA sample plot design. Results demonstrate the simplicity and utility of using kNN to produce FIA defined forest/nonforest/water classifications. [Termes IGN] reconnaissance de formesRésumé : (Auteur) Growing concerns about global climate change, biodiversity maintenance, natural resources conservation, and long-term ecosystem sustainability have been responsible for the transformation of traditional single resource management approaches into integrated ecosystem management models. Eco-regions are large ecosystems of regional extent that contain smaller ecosystems of similar response potential and resource production capabilities. They can be used as a geographical framework for organizing and reporting resource information, setting bioecological recovery criteria, extrapolating site-level management, and monitoring global change. The objective of this research is to develop a quantitative, multivariate regionalization model that is capable of delineating eco-regions at multiple levels from remotely sensed information and other environmental and natural resources spatial data. The Spatial Pattern Analysis Model developed in this study uses a region-growing algorithm to generate spatially contiguous regions from primitive polygonal land units. The algorithm merges the most similar pair of neighbouring units at each iteration, based on satisfying certain similarity criteria until all units are grouped into one. This model was utilized to develop an eco-region map of Nebraska with three hierarchical levels. In the mapping process, the STATSGO data set was used to build the primitive map units. Environmental parameters included in the model were multi-temporal AVHRR data, soil rooting depth, organic matter content, available water capacity, and long-term annual averages of water balance and growing degree day totals. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This study utilizes geographic information systems (GIS) for watershed delineation of 71 Pacific Northwest (USA) watersheds, and presents an integrated methodology for watershed delineation relying on the ArcView Spatial Analyst Hydrologic Modeling Extension. Gaging station data for 71 streams, USGS land use/ land cover data, and USGS digital elevation models were analysed using ArcView, ArcView Spatial Analyst with the Hydrologic Modeling extension, and Arcinfo. The major findings of this research are (1) exact pour point location determination integrated with modifications to the ArcView watershed delineation script may dramatically increase watershed boundary accuracy ; (2) low gradient and/or dense urban areas surrounding pour point negatively impact delineation ; and (3) consistent quality control and use of supplemental delineation methods is recommended for ail digitally delineated watersheds.
