[Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (Auteur) The purpose of this study was to compare a number of state-of-the-art methods in airborne laser scanning (ALS) remote sensing with regards to their capacity to describe tree size inequality and other indicators related to forest structure. The indicators chosen were based on the analysis of the Lorenz curve: Gini coefficient (GC), Lorenz asymmetry (LA), the proportions of basal area (BALM) and stem density (NSLM) stocked above the mean quadratic diameter. Each method belonged to one of these estimation strategies: (A) estimating indicators directly; (B) estimating the whole Lorenz curve; or (C) estimating a complete tree list. Across these strategies, the most popular statistical methods for area-based approach (ABA) were used: regression, random forest (RF), and nearest neighbour imputation. The latter included distance metrics based on either RF (NN–RF) or most similar neighbour (MSN). In the case of tree list estimation, methods based on individual tree detection (ITD) and semi-ITD, both combined with MSN imputation, were also studied. The most accurate method was direct estimation by best subset regression, which obtained the lowest cross-validated coefficients of variation of their root mean squared error CV(RMSE) for most indicators: GC (16.80%), LA (8.76%), BALM (8.80%) and NSLM (14.60%). Similar figures [CV(RMSE) 16.09%, 10.49%, 10.93% and 14.07%, respectively] were obtained by MSN imputation of tree lists by ABA, a method that also showed a number of additional advantages, such as better distributing the residual variance along the predictive range. In light of our results, ITD approaches may be clearly inferior to ABA with regards to describing the structural properties related to tree size inequality in forested areas. [Termes IGN] topologieRésumé : (Auteur) Traditional geographic information system (GIS)-overlay routines usually build on relatively simple data models. Topology is – if at all – calculated on the fly for very specific tasks only. If, for example, a change comparison is conducted between two or more polygon layers, the result leads mostly to a complete and also very complex from–to class intersection. A lot of additional processing steps need to be performed to arrive at aggregated and meaningful results. To overcome this problem a new, automated geospatial overlay method in a topologically enabled (multi-scale) framework is presented. The implementation works with polygon and raster layers and uses a multi-scale vector/raster data model developed in the object-based image analysis software eCognition (Trimble Geospatial Imaging, Munich, Germany). Advantages are the use of the software inherent topological relationships in an object-by-object comparison, addressing some of the basic concepts of object-oriented data modeling such as classification, generalization, and aggregation. Results can easily be aggregated to a change-detection layer; change dependencies and the definition of different change classes are interactively possible through the use of a class hierarchy and its inheritance (parent–child class relationships). Implementation is exemplarily shown for a change comparison of CORINE Land Cover data sets. The result is a flexible and transferable solution which is – if parameterized once – fully automated. [Termes IGN] rayonnement infrarougeRésumé : (Auteur) Many remote sensing applications involve the classification of anomalous responses as either objects of interest or clutter. This paper addresses the problem of anomaly classification in hyperspectral imagery (HSI) and focuses on robustly detecting disturbed earth in the long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectrum. Although disturbed earth yields a distinct LWIR signature that distinguishes it from the background, its distribution relative to clutter may vary over different environmental contexts. In this paper, a generic Bayesian framework is proposed for training context-dependent classification rules from wide-area airborne LWIR imagery. The proposed framework combines sparse classification models with either supervised or discriminative context identification to pool information across contexts and improve classification overall. Experiments are performed with data from a LWIR landmine detection system. Contexts are learned from endmember abundances extracted from the background near each detected anomaly. Classification performance is compared with single-classifier approaches using the same information as well as other baseline anomaly detectors from the literature. Results indicate that utilizing context for classifying anomalies in HSI could lead to more robust performance over varying terrain. [Termes IGN] Web Feature ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) Remote sensing imagery has been commonly used by intelligence analysts to discover geospatial features, including complex ones. The overwhelming volume of routine image acquisition requires automated methods or systems for feature discovery instead of manual image interpretation. The methods of extraction of elementary ground features such as buildings and roads from remote sensing imagery have been studied extensively. The discovery of complex geospatial features, however, is still rather understudied. A complex feature, such as a Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD) proliferation facility, is spatially composed of elementary features (e.g., buildings for hosting fuel concentration machines, cooling towers, transportation roads, and fences). Such spatial semantics, together with thematic semantics of feature types, can be used to discover complex geospatial features. This paper proposes a workflow-based approach for discovery of complex geospatial features that uses geospatial semantics and services. The elementary features extracted from imagery are archived in distributed Web Feature Services (WFSs) and discoverable from a catalogue service. Using spatial semantics among elementary features and thematic semantics among feature types, workflow-based service chains can be constructed to locate semantically-related complex features in imagery. The workflows are reusable and can provide on-demand discovery of complex features in a distributed environment.
