[Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) An algorithm for automatic extraction of pole-like street furniture objects using Mobile Laser Scanner data was developed and tested. The method consists in an initial simplification of the point cloud based on the regular voxelization of the space. The original point cloud is spatially discretized and a version of the point cloud whose amount of data represents 20–30% of the total is created. All the processes are carried out with the reduced version of the data, but the original point cloud is always accessible without any information loss, as each point is linked to its voxel. All the horizontal sections of the voxelized point cloud are analyzed and segmented separately. The two-dimensional fragments compatible with a section of a target pole are selected and grouped. Finally, the three-dimensional voxel representation of the detected pole-like objects is identified and the points from the original point cloud belonging to each pole-like object are extracted. The algorithm can be used with data from any Mobile Laser Scanning system, as it transforms the original point cloud and fits it into a regular grid, thus avoiding irregularities produced due to point density differences within the point cloud. The algorithm was tested in four test sites with different slopes and street shapes and features. All the target pole-like objects were detected, with the only exception of those severely occluded by large objects and some others which were either attached or too close to certain features. [Termes IGN] système de gestion de base de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) The integrated management of heterogeneous spatial data, such as continuous fields and discrete data, is an important issue for the Geographic Information (GI) community. Indeed, GI users are forced to navigate among and operate with several tools in order to solve their spatial problems, due to the lack of systems capable of integrating different components, each meant to provide a specific solution. The aim of this article is to propose an OpenGeospatial-compliant solution which supports expert users in handling problems involving heterogeneous data by means of a seamless approach. A class hierarchy modeling spatial discrete objects, continuous data, relationships, and operations, is described, whereby data are organized in agreement with the binary representation. A running example is illustrated to support readers' understanding of the proposed solution. Finally, some guidelines about an implementation modality are given, to demonstrate the applicability of the proposal to an existing DBMS. [Termes IGN] quantité discrèteRésumé : (Auteur) Geoscientific datasets are often formed by scattered samples in 3D space having highly anisotropic distribution. To model the continuity of the phenomena they represent (e.g. temperature of a body of water, or percentage of a chemical in the air) raster structures are in most cases used. To overcome the shortcomings of rasters the Voronoi diagram (VD) has been proposed as an alternative. However, while in theory the VD is a sound solution, its use in practice is hindered by the fact that it is complex to construct and to manipulate (removal of samples, interpolation, etc.), and spatial tools have to be built. We propose in this paper a “middle" solution: the 3D discrete Voronoi diagram (DVD). We investigate the properties of the 3D DVD, we propose algorithms to construct and manipulate it, and we demonstrate its use in practice with a prototype that we have built. Our prototype uses existing tools for visualisation and further analysis of DVDs.
