The second objective is to develop end-user software libraries and programs implementing two variational segmentation models to perform practically images and one dimensional signals segmentation. In the thesis there are no original mathematical contributions, that would be outside the competences of the author. The mathematical problems have been approached and studied with the aim of making a bridge between the theory and the applications. Part 1 of the thesis is the outcome of this study. The main thesis results are the development of original software libraries and programs to perform segmentation of images and of one dimensional signals and the application of such programs to real data sets. The developed numerical programs allowed also to study and to reproduce in practice the well known features of the theoretical formulations of segmentation approached as a ”Free Discontinuity Problem”. This work deals with the Mumford and Shah functional and with the Blake and Zisserman functional. The Mumford and Shah functional in dimension two is introduced, studied, implemented numerically and applied to the segmentation of images. An extension of the Mumford and Shah is treated analogously. The Blake and Zisserman functional is introduced and studied in dimension two and then in dimension one, while the numerical implementation and the applications are performed in dimension one, i.e to the segmentation of one dimensional signals. Specifically, the thesis faces the problem of segmenting environmental images, such as aerophotogrammetry images and one dimensional signal time series arising from Geodesy, such as GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) permanent stations coordinates. [Termes IGN] représentation continueRésumé : (Auteur) Geographic representation has become more complex through time as researchers have added new concepts, leading to apparently endless proliferation and creating a need for simplification. We show that many of these concepts can be derived from a single foundation that we term the atomic form of geographic information. The familiar concepts of continuous fields and discrete objects can be derived under suitable rules applied to the properties and values of the atomic form. Fields and objects are further integrated through the concept of phase space, and in the form of field objects. A second atomic concept is introduced, termed the geo-dipole, and shown to provide a foundation for object fields, metamaps, and the association classes of object-oriented data modelling. Geographic dynamics are synthesized in a three-dimensional space defined by static or dynamic object shape, the possibility of movement, and the possibility of dynamic internal structure. The atomic form also provides a tentative argument that discrete objects and continuous fields are the only possible bases for geographic representation. [Termes IGN] voxelRésumé : (Auteur) Environmental modelling languages are programming languages developed for building computer models simulating environmental processes. They come with database and visualization routines for the data used in the models. Environmental modelling languages provide the possibility to construct dynamic models, also called forward models, which are simulations run forward in time, where the state of the model at time t is defined as a function of its state in a time step preceding t. Nowadays, these modelling languages can deal with simulations in two spatial dimensions, but existing software does not support the construction of models in three dimensions. We describe concepts of an environmental modelling language supporting dynamic model construction in two and three spatial dimensions. The lateral dimension is represented by gridded maps, with a regular discretization, while the vertical dimension is represented by an irregular discretization in voxels. Universal spatial functions are described with these entities of the modelling language as input. Dynamic modelling through time is possible by combining these functions in structured script sections, providing a section, which is executed repetitively, representing the time steps. The concepts of the language are illustrated with two example models, built with a prototype of the language. [Termes IGN] triangulation localeRésumé : (Auteur) Triangulated irregular networks (TIN) can form the basis for multiple-resolution representations in distributed hydrogeomorphic simulations over complex basins. Current methods for deriving TIN meshes depend primarily on surface slope without considering other terrain attributes significant to the watershed response such as the specific basin area. As an alternative, we present a methodology for combining a hydrogeomorphic or landscape index with an unstructured triangulated mesh. Landscape indices provide a concise method for describing steady-state terrain processes by isolating the dominant physical factors. The mesh-generation algorithm results in an adaptive discretization that resembles the spatial pattern of the landscape index with a high resolution retained in areas expected to impact the basin response. We compare the proposed algorithm with a slope-preserving method as a means for initializing the terrain representation in two TIN-based hydrogeomorphic models. Through three case studies in saturation-excess runoff, transport-limited soil erosion and shallow landslide simulation, we assess the distributed model sensitivity to the triangulated terrain algorithm. Model comparisons reveal that the process-based triangulations focus the distributed simulation in regions anticipated via a steady-state index to affect the transient watershed response.
