[Termes IGN] rugosité du solRésumé : (Auteur) Spatial distribution of surface roughness is very critical information for many application areas. Surface roughness is often characterized using statistical distribution. However, due to the huge complexity associated with spatial soil surfaces it is difficult to accurately characterize surface roughness over large areas using statistical distribution. Surface roughness influences SAR backscatter significantly and therefore for bare soil surfaces, surface roughness plays a critical role in determining the degree of depolarization of the SAR signal. In this paper, surface roughness is retrieved using multi-polarized Envisat-1 ASAR data. The depolarization ratio [ó°VH - ó°VV] has been found to be very sensitive to surface roughness. This study demonstrates an approach that can be used to retrieve quantitative surface roughness values from a space platform without making any assumptions regarding distribution of surface roughness on the ground. [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) We used LiDAR topographic data, AVIRIS hyperspectral data, and locally measured tidal fluctuations to characterize patterns of plant distribution within a southern California salt marsh (Carpinteria Salt Marsh (CSM)). LiDAR data required ground truthing and correction before they were suitable for use. Twenty to forty percent of the uncertainty associated with LiDAR was due to variance in the elevation of the target surface, the balance was attributed to error inherent in the LiDAR system. The incidence of LiDAR penetration of plant canopy cover (i.e., registration of ground elevation) was only three percent. The depth of LiDAR penetration into the plant canopy varied according to plant species composition; plant species-specific corrections significantly improved LiDAR accuracy (58% reduction in overall uncertainty) and with the use of ground-based surveys, reduced overall RMSE to an average of 6.3 cm in vegetated areas. A supervised classification of AVIRIS data was used to generate a vegetation map with six classification types; overall classification accuracy averaged 59% with a kappa coefficient of 0.40. The vegetation classification map was overlaid with a LiDAR-based digital elevation model (DEM) to compute elevation distributions and frequencies of tidal inundation. The average elevations of the dominant plant classifications found in CSM (e.g., Salicornia virginica, Jaumea carnosa, and salt-grass mix, a mixture of multiple marsh plant species) occurred within a 17 cm range, a vertical change that resulted in a 7% difference in the period of tidal inundation. [Termes IGN] surveillance sanitaireRésumé : (Auteur) Population mobility, i.e. the movement and contact of individuals across geographic space, is one of the essential factors that determine the course of a pandemic disease spread. This research views both individual-based daily activities and a pandemic spread as spatial interaction problems, where locations interact with each other via the visitors that they share or the virus that is transmitted from one place to another. The research proposes a general visual analytic approach to synthesize very large spatial interaction data and discover interesting (and unknown) patterns. The proposed approach involves a suite of visual and computational techniques, including (1) a new graph partitioning method to segment a very large interaction graph into a moderate number of spatially contiguous subgraphs (regions); (2) a reorderable matrix, with regions 'optimally' ordered on the diagonal, to effectively present a holistic view of major spatial interaction patterns; and (3) a modified flow map, interactively linked to the reorderable matrix, to enable pattern interpretation in a geographical context. The implemented system is able to visualize both people's daily movements and a disease spread over space in a similar way. The discovered spatial interaction patterns provide valuable insight for designing effective pandemic mitigation strategies and supporting decision-making in time-critical situations. [Termes IGN] image Landsat-ETM+Résumé : (Auteur) We introduce and evaluate three methods for modeling the spatial distribution of multiple land-cover classes at subpixel scales: (a) sequential categorical swapping, (b) simultaneous categorical swapping, and (c) simulated annealing. Method 1, a modification of a binary pixel-swapping algorithm, allocates each class in turn to maximize internal spatial autocorrelation. Method 2 simultaneously examines all pairs of cell-class combinations within a pixel to determine the most appropriate pairs of sub-pixels to swap. Method 3 employs simulated annealing to swap cells. While convergence is relatively slow, Method 3 offers increased flexibility. Each method is applied to a classified Landsat-7 ETM dataset that has been resampled to a spatial resolution of 210 m, and evaluated for accuracy performance and computational efficiency.
