[Termes IGN] polygone de ThiessenRésumé : (Auteur) Sampling satellite images presents some specific characteristics : images overlap and many of them fall partially outside the studied region. A careless sampling may introduce an important bias. This paper illustrates the risk of bias and the efficiency improvements of systematic, pps (probability proportional to size) and stratified sampling. A sampling method is proposed with the following criteria: (a) unbiased estimators are easy to compute; (b) it can be combined with stratification; (c) within each stratum, sampling probability is proportional to the area of the sampling unit; and (d) the geographic distribution of the sample is reasonably homogeneous. Thiessen polygons computed on image centres are sampled through a systematic grid of points. The sampling rates in different strata are tuned by dividing the systematic grid into subgrids or replicates and taking for each stratum a certain number of replicates. The approach is illustrated with an application to the estimation of the geometric accuracy of Image2000, a Landsat ETM+ mosaic of the European Union. [Termes IGN] problème inverseRésumé : (auteur) The problem of finding the density distribution of the Earth from gravity data is called the inverse gravimetric problem. It is well known that this problem has not a unique solution. A possible approach to force the uniqueness of the solution is to impose the solution to realize a minimum of energy, that is to be an equilibrium distribution. Several authors have considered this possibility by setting the energy to the sole energy of the potential field. In this paper, we show that such approaches correspond to the maximization of a quadratic form in the set of the density distributions considered as an Hilbert space. As a consequence, they cannot deliver realistic results without a constraint that reduces the set of possible density distributions to a bounded domain of the considered Hilbert space. Moreover, under such constraints, the result will necessarily be located at the boundary of the searched domain. In order to express a steady state condition leading to a freer solution, we propose to introduce a compression energy. We choose the state equation of Murnaghan that is known to apply reasonably in the upper mantle. We give an integral form of the compression energy and show that the resulting total energy admits a lower bound, which assess the existence of a solution. Finally, we derive a differential equation verified by that the absolute minima from the equilibrium equation under its local form. [Termes IGN] Water Vapour and Wind in Atmospheric Troposphere and StratosphereRésumé : (Auteur) This paper shows the main results of a pre-feasibility study commissioned by the European Space Agency (ESA) in the framework of the Earth Explorer Core Mission programme. The analysed mission is called WATS (Water vapour and wind in Atmospheric Troposphere and Stratosphere) and aims to monitor variations and changes in the global atmospheric water vapour distribution and lower-stratosphere/upper-troposphere winds. Starting from a set of scientific requirements, the present work shows the main results of the mission analysis in terms of the number and spatial distribution of possible measurements. By performing trade-off with respect to expected values, the number of satellites forming the constellation has been fixed as well as the main orbital parameters, also taking into account degradations within the maximum expected mission lifetime. To assess the accuracy of the final measurement, a suitable performance model has been established that takes into account the effects of both the radio propagation of the signal through the atmosphere and the instrument receiving chain. The results obtained by running such a performance model are presented and discussed in order to assess the main system parameters mainly in terms of minimum transmitted power. Following, a sensitivity analysis is presented that shows the effects of antenna pointing error, receiver gain fluctuation, effective antenna size and pre-detection bandwidth. In this paper, a relationship between annual ET, integrated Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Relative Moisture Index (RMI) was established. Based on this relationship, the spatial distribution and dynamic change of annual ET were estimated for the Yellow River Basin, China from 1982 to 2000. Our analyses involved the use of integrated NDVI data, monthly mean air temperature, and precipitation. Our results showed that the integrated AVHRR NDVI can be used to effectively estimate annual ET in the Yellow River Basin, with an accuracy over 90% for the whole basin.
