[Termes IGN] image panchromatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This work presents a multiresolution framework for merging a multispectral image having an arbitrary number of bands with a higher-resolution panchromatic observation. The fusion method relies on the generalized Laplacian pyramid (glp), which is a multiscale, oversampled structure. The goal is to selectively perform injection of spatial frequencies from an image to another with the constraint of thoroughly retaining the spectral information of the coarser data. The novel idea is that a model of the modulation transfer functions (mtf) of the multispectral scanner is exploited to design the glp reduction filter. Thus, the interband structure model (ibsm), which is calculated at the coarser scale, where both MS and pan data are available, can be extended to the finer scale, without the drawback of the poor enhancement occurring when MTFs are assumed to be ideal filters. Experiments carried out on QuickBird data demonstrate that a superior spatial enhancement, besides the spectral quality typical of injection methods, is achieved by means of the MTF-adjusted fusion. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper addresses two grand challenges in the development of methods for Geographic Information Science (GIS). First, this paper presents techniques to compute a cross-tabulation matrix for soft-classified pixels. Second, it shows how to compute the cross-tabulation matrix at multiple scales. The traditional approach to construct the cross-tabulation matrix uses a Boolean operator to analyse pixels that are hard-classified. For soft-classified pixels, the contemporary approach uses a Multiplication operator ; the fuzzy approach uses a Minimum operator ; whereas this paper proposes a multiple-resolution approach that uses a Composite operator. There are difficulties with the traditional, contemporary, and fuzzy methods of computing the cross-tabulation matrix. The proposed multiple-resolution method resolves those difficulties. Furthermore, the proposed method facilitates multiple-resolution analysis, so it can examine how results change as a function of scale. The paper derives the equations to compute cross-tabulation matrices at multiple resolutions and connects those equations to ontological foundations of GIS. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) Integration of spectral and multi-scale texture is proposed in order to improve the detection and classification of urban-trees from Quickbird imagery. Arguing that spatial -structure semantic information exits at a hierarchy of scales and that texture is a consequence of objects in the hierarchy, multi-scale wavelets decomposition is proposed for the extraction of vertical, horizontal and diagonal texture components. Pre-selection of texture sub-bands is achieved via mean, entropy, variance and second angular moment. The resulting sub-bands are analysed for separability between trees and similarly reflecting features, such as rice-paddy, grass/lawns, open ground and playground, based on KuIlbackLeibler (KL) divergence and Battacharyya distance. The results are ranked and classified with k-means. In comparison with the field data, KL gave the best results with omission and commission error of 4.4%. The proposed methodology has the ability to capture the increased natural variability in reflectance and improved the accuracy by 23.6%, in comparison with spectral-only. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Empirical observations of the way cartographers deal with generalization problems lead to the hypothesis that they first detect patterns of anomalies in the cartographic data set and then eliminate anomalies by transforming the data. Automatically identifying patterns of anomalies on the map is a difficult task when using GIS functions or traditional algorithmic approaches. Techniques based on the use of neural networks have been widely used in artificial intelligence in order to solve pattern-recognition problems. In this paper, we explore how Kohonen-type neural networks can be used to deal with map generalization applications in which the main problem is to identify high-density regions that include cartographic elements of the same type. We also propose an algorithm to replace cartographic elements located in a region by its surrounding polygon. The use of this type of neural network permitted us to generate different levels of grouping according to the chosen zoom-scale on the map. These levels correspond to a multiple representation of the generalized cartographic elements. As an illustration, we apply our approach to the automatic replacement of a group of houses represented as a set of very close points in the original data set, by a polygon representing the corresponding urban area in the generalized map.
