[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) About 30% of the total global economic loss inflicted by natural hazards is caused by flooding. Among them, the most serious situation is urban flooding. Urban impervious surface enhances storm runoff and overwhelms the drainage capacity of the storm sewer system, while the urban socioeconomic characteristics most often exacerbate them even more vulnerable to urban flooding impacts. Currently, there is still a significant knowledge gap of comparable assessment and understanding of minority's and non-minority's vulnerability. Therefore, this study designs a quantitative thematic mapping method–location quotient (LQ), using Birmingham, Alabama, USA as the study area. Urban residents' vulnerability to flooding is then analyzed demographically using LQ with census data. Comparing with the widely used social vulnerability index (SVI), LQ is more robust, which not only provides more detailed measurements of both the minority's and the White's vulnerability, but also shows a direct comparison for all populations with finer information about their potential spatial risk assessment. Although SVI showed the Shades Creek is the most vulnerable area with a SVI value above 0.75, only 228 Hispanic people and 2290 African-American live there that is not a significant aggregation of minorities in Birmingham; however, a total White population 12,872 is identified by LQ with a significant aggregation in the Shades Creek. Overall, LQ suggests that the White populations are highly and significantly concentrated in the flood areas, while SVI never considered the White as vulnerable. LQ further indicates that the concentration of minorities (i.e., 88,895) and vulnerable houses (i.e., 26,235) are much higher compared to the numbers of the minorities and houses indicated by SVI, which are only 11,772 and 8323, respectively. The LQ based thematic mapping, as a promising method for vulnerability assessment of urban hazards and risks, can make a significant contribution to hazard management efforts to reduce urban vulnerability and hence enhance urban resilience to hazards in the future. [Termes IGN] SardaigneRésumé : (Auteur) Wildland fires represent a major threat to Quercus suber L. ecosystems, which provide relevant socioeconomic and ecological services in the Mediterranean Basin. In this work, we analyzed recent wildland fire dynamics in cork oak woodlands along the fire-prone areas of Sardinia (Italy), Corsica (France) and Catalonia (Spain). We first characterized geographic extent and main characteristics of cork oak woodlands in these regions and analyzed how environmental (climate and elevation) and socioeconomic factors (population and land uses) vary in the areas covered by Quercus suber L. We then evaluated how wildfires affected cork oak stands and, by logistic regression analysis, to what extent wildfires in cork oak areas were related to the above set of environmental and anthropic explanatory variables. Results revealed specific variations across study areas in cork oak characteristics as well as in environmental and social factors. We highlighted the spatial and temporal patterns of wildfires on cork oak woodlands, in terms of extent, seasonality, frequency and main driving factors. In the period 2003–2015, the percentage of cork oak woodlands burned ranged from 3.42% in Corsica to 11.30% in Sardinia. A few large and severe wildfires accounted for most of the area burned in cork oak woodlands. The most significant predictive variable that explained the spatial variation in wildland fire ignitions inside or nearby cork oaks was summer precipitation, while the weight of other factors varied depending on the region. This study provides evidence on recent fire dynamics in cork oak woodlands and gives valuable information and insights for the implementation of forest management and planning strategies in the Mediterranean area. [Termes IGN] TwitterRésumé : (Auteur) Massive social media data produced from microblog platforms provide a new data source for studying human dynamics at an unprecedented scale. Meanwhile, population bias in geotagged Twitter users is widely recognized. Understanding the demographic and socioeconomic biases of Twitter users is critical for making reliable inferences on the attitudes and behaviors of the population. However, the existing global models cannot capture the regional variations of the demographic and socioeconomic biases. To bridge the gap, we modeled the relationships between different demographic/socioeconomic factors and geotagged Twitter users for the whole contiguous United States, aiming to understand how the demographic and socioeconomic factors relate to the number of Twitter users at county level. To effectively identify the local Twitter users for each county of the United States, we integrate three commonly used methods and develop a query approach in a high-performance computing environment. The results demonstrate that we can not only identify how the demographic and socioeconomic factors relate to the number of Twitter users, but can also measure and map how the influence of these factors vary across counties. [Termes IGN] zone homogèneRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents classification methods that enable the division of space into homogeneous areas that combine the spatial characteristics with influence on land use and changes thereof. It was determined that the existing methods do not always include the criteria needed for the aggregation of spatial units into homogeneous groups. The results of the analysis showed that the identified homogenous groups do not fully capture the spatial complexity and diversity important for land use change analyses. For this reason, a new approach to the classification of spatial units based on the unsupervised classification of digital images was proposed. The methodology includes the selection of appropriate indicators, that consider land use more comprehensively and thus enable better classification results. The use of the unsupervised classification method for prevailing land use typology has been tested in Slovenia. At the municipal level, seven types of prevailing land use were identified.
