[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Integrated landscape management (ILM) is gaining increasing attention among Canadian practitioners for its capabilities to address environmental, social and economic goals simultaneously, while promoting sustainable development. ILM is relatively new in the family of integrated assessment (IA) approaches. This paper focuses on the lessons learned from the longer history of IA and its spatially explicit applications to inform current applications of ILM in Canada. We specifically focus on the role of spatially explicit information in addressing critical issues already flagged by ILM practitioners. In particular, we focus on challenges in defining roles and benefits of participation, linking environmental and social issues in integrated models and, testing and presenting uncertainties in the integrated models. We illustrate how some of these challenges were addressed using case studies from Canada, the United States and Europe. The experiences from these studies show that using GIS and other geospatial information tools can be effectively integrated into IA to enhance the relevance of IA for decision-making and to assist with participatory engagement activities by introducing new ways to explore and present choices and options to practitioners. The use of geospatial tools also enable integrated modelling to occur at spatially disaggregated levels, which increases the context under which external influences may be considered. Despite these benefits, current applications of these tools tend to be limited to technical representation of system conditions and the visualization of biophysical processes. A deficiency of socio-economic indicators and change information, including policy and management actions and impacts, means that outcomes from these tools currently have limited relevance for policy-makers. [Termes IGN] territoireRésumé : (Auteur) The application of geomatics for Integrated Land Management (ILM) often focuses on analysis and modelling of bio-physical dimensions of a study area. However, data about human dimensions, such as socio-economic conditions of communities within a region, are equally important to consider as key drivers behind various ILM scenarios. Incorporating socio-economic conditions of communities in a spatially-explicit manner presents a number of challenges due to differences in spatial frameworks associated with human and biophysical data. This paper presents an approach for integrating socio-economic data for ILM analysis that allows better geospatial alignment and integration of human and biophysical dimensions, and further allows for a more local, contextual analysis of the relationships and dependencies particular communities have with the surrounding landscape and its resources. It does this using a concept of communities as ‘human habitats’ whereby each community in a region can be analyzed in terms of how it is co-evolving and adapting with other communities in the region and with natural changes in the bio-physical landscape. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Injury from causes such as falls, traffic accidents, or violence is a major public health issue globally. Injury prevention research aims to identify vulnerable populations and places by analyzing the spatial patterns of demographic and socio-economic risk factors associated with elevated injury rates. The stakeholders in injury prevention and control are often distributed across government and public health institutions, non-profits, and even the private sector (e.g. insurance firms). While this situation calls for distributed, online research tools, their implementation may conflict with health data confidentiality and license limitations for socio-economic data. In this article, we present the Online Injury Atlas for Ontario, which was designed with the explicit goal of making use of, and contributing to, the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure. We propose a service-based architecture that integrates publicly accessible map services with protected data layers. Thereby, we demonstrate the benefits of using spatial data infrastructures alongside private data at different levels of protection. In addition, we discuss the extensive data processing needs and specific cartographic design requirements of a Web atlas in the health and social sciences domain.
