[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Capturing the scope and trajectory of changes in land use and land cover (LULC) is critical to urban and regional planning, natural resource sustainability and the overall information needs of policy makers. Studies on LULC change are generally conducted within peaceful environments and seldom incorporate areas that are politically volatile. Consequently, the role of civil conflict on LULC change remains elusive. Using a dense time stack of Landsat Thematic Mapper images and a hybrid classification approach, this study analysed LULC changes in Kono District between 1986–1991, 1991–2002 and 2002–2007 with the overarching goal of elucidating deviations from typical changes in LULC caused by Sierra Leone's civil war (1991–2002). Informed by social survey and secondary data, this study engaged the drivers that facilitated LULC changes during war and non-war periods in a series of spatial regression models in exploring the interface between civil conflict and LULC change. [Termes IGN] Uttarakhand (Inde ; état)Résumé : (Auteur) Uttarakhand state, located in northern India, has a total geographic area of 51,125km2. Ninety-three per cent of the state is mountainous whereas 64% is forested area, and the cities of the region has different living standards. The Quality of Life (QOL) is assessed in the state by using remote sensing-derived parameters along with the census data warehouse in geospatial environment. The study develops a methodology to measure the QOL in the state using geospatial techniques. The study addresses use of Landsat MSS satellite imagery to estimate environmental parameters like vegetation fraction, impervious surface fraction and land surface temperature. Census of India details were integrated along with remote sensing data-derived parameters in the GIS environment. Factor analysis was conducted to interpret the input parameters for the assessment of QOL index. In this process, three indices were generated (crowdedness, greenness and economic indices). These indices were further processed to estimate the overall QOL index of Uttarakhand. All types of spatial maps were published in the distributed environment using open source internet GIS technologies. [Termes IGN] PostgreSQLRésumé : (Auteur) The Wales Institute of Socio-Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) is an interdisciplinary, cross-institutional academic research group based in Wales, UK. One of the key objectives of WISERD is to develop a spatial framework that enhances a researcher's ability to discover socio-economic research data relating to Wales with the aim of encouraging collaborative research and re-use of existing data. This article describes the development of an online geoportal designed to meet this objective. Using free and open-source software (FOSS) components and services, a range of software tools has been developed to capture standards-compliant metadata for a variety of data sources. The geoportal is unique in that, in our review of over 120 geoportals worldwide, we have not previously encountered a geoportal dedicated to supporting quantitative and qualitative social science academic and policy research. A particularly innovative aspect of the geoportal has involved the building of a rich meta-database of government surveys, geo-referenced semantically-tagged qualitative data (generated from primary research), ‘grey’ data (e.g. from transcripts, journal publications, books, PhD theses) and Government administrative data. This article describes the challenges faced during the development of the WISERD Geoportal which can be accessed via http://www.wiserd.ac.uk/geoportal/. [Termes IGN] programmation par contraintesRésumé : (auteur) Cartographic generalization seeks to summarize geographical information from a geo-database to produce a less detailed and readable map. The specifications of a legible map are translated into a set of constraints to guide the generalization process and evaluate it. The global evaluation of the map, or of a part of it, consisting in aggregating all the single constraints satisfactions, is still to tackle for the generalization community. This paper deals with the use of the social welfare theory to handle the aggregation of the single satisfactions on the map level. The social welfare theory deals with the evaluation of the economical global welfare of a society, based on the individual welfare. Different social welfare orderings are adapted to generalization, compared and some are chosen for several generalization use cases. Experiments with topographic maps are carried out to validate the choices.
