[Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines the influence that certain omission and commission errors can have on the gravity field models estimated from the initial release of data (RL01) from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission. The effects of omission errors were analyzed by limiting the degree and order to which the GPS and K-band range-rate (KBR) measurement partials were extended in the solution process. The commission error studies focused on the impact of an imperfect mean reference gravity field model on the solution. Combinations of both of these error sources were also explored. The nature of these errors makes them difficult to distinguish from the true gravity signal, so the exploration of these error sources was performed using simulations; however, comparisons to real-data solutions are provided. The results show how each of the specific error sources investigated influences the gravity field solution. The simulations also show how all of the errors examined can be sufficiently mitigated through the appropriate choice of processing parameters. [Termes IGN] thermal infrared multispectral scannerRésumé : (Auteur) The temperature-independent thermal infrared spectral indices (TISI) method is employed for the separation of land surface temperature (LST) and emissivity from surface radiances (atmospherically corrected satellite data). The daytime reflected solar irradiance and the surface emission at ~3.8 um have comparable magnitudes. Using surface radiances and a combination of day-night 2-channel TISI ratios, the ~3.8 um reflectivity is derived. For implementing the TISI method, coefficients for NOAA 9-16 AVHRR channels are obtained. A numerical analysis with simulated surface radiances shows that for most surface types (showing nearly Lambertian behavior) the achievable accuracy is ~0.005 for emissivity (AVHRR channel-5) and ~1.5 K for LST. Data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is used for calculation of atmospheric attenuation. Comparisons are made over a part of central Europe on two différent dates (seasons). Clouds pose a major problem to surface observations; hence, monthly emissivity composites are derived. Additionally, using TISI-based monthly composites of emissivities, a normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)-based method is tuned to the particular study area and the results are intercompared. Once the coefficients are known, the NDVI method is easily implemented but holds well only for vegetated areas. The error of the NDVI-based emissivities (with respect to the TISI results) ranges between -0.038 and 0.032, but for vegetated areas the peak of the error-histogram is at ~0.002. The algorithm for retrieving emissivity via TISI was validated with synthetic data. Due to the different spatial scales of satellite and surface measurements and the lack of homogeneous areas, which are representative for low-resolution pixels and ground measurements, ground-validation is a daunting task. However, for operational products ground-truth validation is necessary. Therefore, also an approach to identify suitable validation sites for meteorological satellite products in Europe is described. [Termes IGN] température de luminanceRésumé : (Auteur) End-to-end calibration of the Microwave Imaging Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) radiometer refers to processing the measured raw data up to dual-polarization brightness temperature maps over the earth's surface, which is the level 1 product of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. The process starts with a self-correction of comparators offset and quadrature error and is followed by the calibration procedure itself. This one is based on periodically injecting correlated and uncorrelated noise to all receivers in order to measure their relevant parameters, which are then used to correct the raw data. This can deal with most of the errors associated with the receivers but does not correct for antenna errors, which must be included in the image reconstruction algorithm. Relative S-parameters of the noise injection network and of the input switch are needed as additional data, whereas the whole process is independent of the exact value of the noise source power and of the distribution network physical temperature. On the other hand, the approach relies on having at least one very well-calibrated reference receiver, which is implemented as a noise injection radiometer. The result is the calibrated visibility function, which is inverted by the image reconstruction algorithm to get the brightness temperature as a function of the director cosines at the antenna reference plane. The final step is a coordinate rotation to obtain the horizontal and vertical brightness temperature maps over the earth. The procedures presented are validated using a complete SMOS simulator previously developed by the authors. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Editeur)This is a book that recognizes the growing commonality between the concerns of science, government, and business. The examples of GIS people and problems that are scattered through this book have been chosen deliberately to illuminate this commonality, as well as the interplay between organizations and people from different sectors. To differing extents, the five sections of the book develop common concerns with effectiveness and efficiency, by bringing together information from disparate sources, acting within regulatory and ethical frameworks, adhering to scientific principles, and preserving good reputations. This, then, is a book that combines the basics of GIS with the solving of problems which often have no single, ideal solution - the world of business, government, and interdisciplinary, mission-orientated holistic science.
In short, we have tried to create a book that remains attuned to the way the world works now, that understands the ways in which most of us increasingly operate as knowledge workers, and that grasps the need to face complicated issues that do not have ideal solutions. As with the first edition of the book, this is an unusual enterprise and product. It has been written by a multinational partnership, drawing upon material from around the world. One of the authors is an employee of a leading software vendor and two of the other three have had business dealings with ESRI over many years. Moreover, some of the illustrations and examples come from the customers of that vendor. We wish to point out, however, that neither ESRI (nor Wiley) has ever sought to influence our content or the way in which we made our judgments, and we have included references to other software and vendors throughout the book. Whilst our lab classes are part of ESRI's Virtual Campus, we also make reference to similar sources of information in both paper and digital form. [...]Note de contenu :
