[Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) Using a concept proposed by Stehman and Czaplewski (1997), we implemented spatially-explicit Monte Carlo simulations to test the effects of manually introduced horizontal positional error on standard inter-rater statistics derived from twelve classified high-resolution images. Through simulations we found that both overall and kappa accuracies decrease markedly with increasing error distance, varying greatly across distances relevant to practical application. The use of ground reference sites falling solely in homogeneous patches significantly improves inter-rater statistics and calls into question the use of kernel-smoothed data in one-time accuracy assessments. Our simulations offer insight into the scale of both structural and cover type heterogeneity across our landscapes, and support a new method for minimizing the effects of positional error on map accuracy. We recommend that analysts use caution when applying traditional accuracy assessment strategies to categorical maps, particularly when working with high-resolution imagery. [Termes IGN] signalRésumé : (Auteur) The transmitted laser mode of Geosciences Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) is a significant factor in determining the received pulse waveforms, which are used for inversing target information. The inversion algorithms in the scientific literature are based on the assumption that the transmitted laser is circular Gaussian. The practical laser pattern of GLAS is not circularly symmetric, but elliptical Gaussian. The received pulse shape will contain a bias, which would cause an error in the inversion information. In this paper, we describe new theoretical models about received pulse signal and inversion errors of range, surface slope and roughness. We present the results of waveforms shape and inversion errors for three representative terrains with different surface slope and roughness. The results show that the maximal inversion errors of range, surface slope, and roughness will reach 24.25 cm, 8.82° and 4.58 m, respectively, which cannot be negligible. Therefore, the inversion information should be reevaluated and amended depending on the type of terrain. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This article presents a new development in measuring the positional error of line features in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in the form of a new measure for estimating the average error variance of line features, including line segment, polyline, polygon, and curved lines. This average error measure is represented in the form of a covariance matrix derived by an analytical approach. Corresponding error indicators are derived from this matrix. The error of line features mainly results from two factors: (1) an error propagated from the original component points of line features and (2) a model error of interpolation between these points. In this study, a method of average error estimation has been derived regarding the first type error of line features that are interpolated by either linear or cubic interpolation methods. The main contribution of the research is the provision of an error measure to assess the quality of spatial data in application settings. The proposed error models for estimating average error variance of line features in a GIS are illustrated by both simulated and practical experiments. The results show that the line accuracy from a linear interpolation is better than a line interpolated using a cubic model. [Termes IGN] réfraction atmosphériqueRésumé : (Auteur) When an optical remote sensing satellite is imaging the Earth in-orbit, the propagation direction of the Line of Sight (LOS) will be changed because of atmospheric refraction. This will result in a geolocation deviation on the collinear rigorous geometric model for direct georeferencing, pushbroom images. To estimate and correct the atmospheric refraction geolocation error, the LOS vector tracking algorithm is introduced and a weighted mean algorithm is used to simplify the ISO standard atmospheric model into a troposphere and stratosphere, i.e., two layers spherical atmosphere. The simulation result shows the atmospheric refraction will introduce about 2 m and 7.5 m geometric displacement when the spacecraft is off-pointed view at 30 and 45 degree angle, respectively. For a state-of-the-art high resolution satellite, the atmospheric refraction displacement shall be corrected. The method has been practiced in the DMC3/TripleSat Constellation to remove the atmospheric refraction geolocation error without ground control points.
