The proposed solution is found with no approximations in an arbitrary Cartesian reference system, thus, efficiently allowing the generation of DEMs in a chosen cartographic projection. Moreover, it is amenable of an easy and precise sensivity analysis that exploits the full three-dimensional nature of the problem, thus being particularly useful when high-squinted and/or crossed-track acquisitions are considered. [Termes IGN] véhicule automobileRésumé : (Auteur) A novel method of map matching using the Global Positioning System (GPS) has been developed which uses digital mapping and height data to augment point position computation. This method reduces the error in position, which is a sum from several sources, including signal delay due to the ionosphere and atmosphere and until recently from 'selective availability' (S/A). S/A was imposed by the US military to degrade purposefully the accuracy of GPS, but was switched off on 2 May 2000, and is to be replaced with 'regional denial capabilities in lieu of global degradation' (Interagency GPS Executive Board, 2000). Taylor et al. (2001) describe the Road Reduction Filter (RRF) in detail. RRF is a method of detecting the correct road on which a vehicle is travelling. In the work described here, the position error vector is estimated in a formal least squares procedure, as the vehicle is moving. This estimate is a map-matched correction, that provides an autonomous alternative to DGPS for in-car navigation and fleet management. In this paper, a formula is derived for 'Mapped Dilution of Precision' (MDOP), defined as the theoretical ratio of position precision using map-matched corrections to that using perfect Differential GPS (DGPS) correction. This is shown to be purely a function of route geometry, and is computed for examples of basic road shapes. MDOP is favourable unless the route has less than a few degrees curvature for several kilometres. MDOP can thus provide an objective estimate of positioning precision to a vehicle driver. Precision estimates using MDOP are shown to agree well with 'true' positioning errors determined using high precision (cm) GPS carrier phase techniques. The exact location of a vehicle on a road is essential for accurate surveying applications. These include close range photogrammetry using digital video or still cameras and the verification of digital mapping by measured (GPS and other sensors) trajectories. [Termes IGN] simplification de contourRésumé : (Auteur) This study examines the effects of line simplification on the positional accuracy of linear features. The goal is to quantify the relation between the level of simplification and the degree of positional error, so that users can choose appropriate levels of simplification that will yield results meeting specific accuracy criteria. The study focuses on the Douglas-Peucker line simplification algorithm and examines both natural and anthropogenic features (streams and roads) derived from United States Geological Survey Digital Line Graphs. Results show that error can be modelled at an aggregate level using cumulative frequency curves and their confidence limits. This makes it possible to identify the level of simplification that eliminates the largest number of vertices while still attaining a specific positional accuracy standard. A simple implementation strategy is described in which an optimal level of simplification is identified and simplification is applied selectively for different lines. The study shows that management of simplification-induced error is possible using simple tools well within the reach of GIS users. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a model for describing the positional error of line segments in geographical information systems (GIS). The model is based on stochastic process theory with the assomptions that the errors of the endpoints of a line segment follow two-dimensional normal distributions. The distribution and density fonctions of the line segments are derived statistically. The uncertainty information matrix of line segments is derived to indicate the error of an arbitrary point on the line segment. This model covers the cases where two-end points are correlated to each other and points on the line segment are stochastically continuous to each other. The model is a more generic error band model than those previously developed ans is called the G-Band model.
