[Termes IGN] méthode des moindres carrésRésumé : (Auteur) Discriminating commercial tree species using hyperspectral remote sensing techniques is critical in monitoring the spatial distributions and compositions of commercial forests. However, issues related to data dimensionality and multicollinearity limit the successful application of the technology. The aim of this study was to examine the utility of the partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) technique in accurately classifying six exotic commercial forest species (Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus nitens, Eucalyptus smithii, Pinus patula, Pinus elliotii and Acacia mearnsii) using airborne AISA Eagle hyperspectral imagery (393–900 nm). Additionally, the variable importance in the projection (VIP) method was used to identify subsets of bands that could successfully discriminate the forest species. Results indicated that the PLS-DA model that used all the AISA Eagle bands (n = 230) produced an overall accuracy of 80.61% and a kappa value of 0.77, with user’s and producer’s accuracies ranging from 50% to 100%. In comparison, incorporating the optimal subset of VIP selected wavebands (n = 78) in the PLS-DA model resulted in an improved overall accuracy of 88.78% and a kappa value of 0.87, with user’s and producer’s accuracies ranging from 70% to 100%. Bands located predominantly within the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum (393–723 nm) showed the most capability in terms of discriminating between the six commercial forest species. Overall, the research has demonstrated the potential of using PLS-DA for reducing the dimensionality of hyperspectral datasets as well as determining the optimal subset of bands to produce the highest classification accuracies. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (auteur) Aim: Soil water is essential for the physiological processes of plant growth and fitness. Owing to the difficulty of assessing wide variations in soil water reserves, plant distribution models usually estimate available water for plants through such climatic proxies as precipitation data (P) or climatic water balance (P minus potential evapotranspiration). We evaluated the ability of simple climatic proxies and soil water balance indices to predict the ecological niches of forest tree species.
Location: France
Methods: Soil water content and deficits were computed and mapped at a resolution of 1 × 1 km throughout France. The predictive abilities of these indices were compared to those of P and climatic water balance to model the distributions of 37 of the most common European tree species. We focused on two species with contrasting water tolerance, Quercus robur and Quercus pubescens, to illustrate the differences between climatic proxies and soil water balance in species response curves and distribution maps.
Results: Throughout France, soil water content was poorly correlated with P and climatic water balance, because low P in the lowlands can be compensated for by water provided by deeper soils, which is not the case in most mountainous areas. Soil water balance performed better than simple climatic water variables for explaining tree species distribution, improving 82% of the models for hygrophilous, meso-hygrophilous, meso-xerophilous, and meso-xerophilous species. Main conclusions: Our results showed that simple climatic values do not accurately represent available water for trees and that soil water balance indices perform better than do climatic proxies for most species. This point is crucial in avoiding underestimating the importance of water in studies aiming to determine the ecological niches of plant species and their responses to climate change.

[Termes IGN] spectroscopieRésumé : (Auteur) We identify canopy species in a Hawaiian tropical forest using supervised classification applied to airborne hyperspectral imagery acquired with the Carnegie Airborne Observatory-Alpha system. Nonparametric methods (linear and radial basis function support vector machine, artificial neural network, and k-nearest neighbor) and parametric methods (linear, quadratic, and regularized discriminant analysis) are compared for a range of species richness values and training sample sizes. We find a clear advantage in using regularized discriminant analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and support vector machines. No unique optimal classifier was found for all conditions tested, but we highlight the possibility of improving support vector machine classification with a better optimization of its free parameters. We also confirm that a combination of spectral and spatial information increases accuracy of species classification: we combine segmentation and species classification from regularized discriminant analysis to produce a map of the 17 discriminated species. Finally, we compare different methods to assess spectral separability and find a better ability of Bhattacharyya distance to assess separability within and among species. The results indicate that species mapping is tractable in tropical forests when using high-fidelity imaging spectroscopy. [Termes IGN] strate végétaleRésumé : (auteur) Context: Forest resource projections are required as part of an appropriate framework for sustainable forest management. Suitable large-scale projection models are usually based on national forest inventory (NFI) data. However, sound projections are difficult to make for heterogeneous resources as they vary greatly with respect to the factors that are assumed to drive forest dynamics on a large spatial scale, e.g. geographically varying growth conditions (here represented by NFI regions), tree species composition (here broadleaf-dominated, conifer-dominated and broadleaf-conifer mixed stands) and stand structure (here high forest, coppice forest and high-coppice forest mixture).
Question and objective: Our question was how does the variance of forest dynamics parameters (i.e. growth, felling and mortality, and recruitment processes) and that of 20-year forest resource projections partition between these factors (NFI region, tree species composition and stand structure), including their interactions. Our objective was to capitalise on the suitability of an existing multi-strata, diameter class matrix model for the purposes of making projections for the highly heterogeneous French forest resource.
Methods: The model was newly calibrated for the entire territory of metropolitan France based on most recent NFI data, i.e. for years 2006–2008. The forest resource was divided into strata by crossing the factors NFI region, tree species composition and stand structure. The variance partitioning of the parameters and projections was assessed based on a model sensitivity analysis.
Results: Growth, felling and mortality varied mainly with NFI region and species composition. Recruitment varied mainly with NFI region and stand structure. All three factors caused variations in resource projections, but with unequal intensities. Factor impacts included first order and interaction effects.
Conclusions: We found, by considering both first order and interaction effects, that NFI region, species composition and stand structure are ecologically relevant factors that jointly drive the dynamics of a heterogeneous forest resource. Their impacts, in our study, varied depending on the forest dynamics process under consideration. Recruitment would appear to have a particularly great impact on resource changes over time.Numéro de notice : A2012-717 Affiliation des auteurs : IGN+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article DOI : 10.1007/s13595-012-0196-1 Date de publication en ligne : 22/03/2012 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-012-0196-1 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=75562
