This will have considerable environmental, economic and public health implications for those populations. Objective and efficient methods of delineating urban extent are a cross-sectoral need complicated by a diversity of urban definition rubrics world-wide. Large-area maps of urban extents are becoming increasingly available in the public domain, as are a wide-range of medium spatial resolution satellite imagery. Here we describe the extension of a methodology based on Landsat ETM and Radarsat imagery to the production of a human settlement map of Kenya. This map was then compared with five satellite imagery-derived, global maps of urban extent at Kenya national-level, against an expert opinion coverage for accuracy assessment. The results showed the map produced using medium spatial resolution satellite imagery was of comparable accuracy to the expert opinion coverage. The five global urban maps exhibited a range of inaccuracies, emphasising that care should be taken with use of these maps at national and sub-national scale. [Termes IGN] Pays-BasRésumé : (Auteur) Thematic maps prepared from remotely sensed images require a statistical accuracy assessment. For this purpose, the k-statistic is often used. This statistic does not distinguish between whether one unit is classified as another, or vice versa. In this paper, the Bradley-Terry (BT) model is applied for accuracy assessment. This model compares categories pairwise. The probability of one class over another class is estimated as well as the expected values of class pixels. The study is illustrated with an Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer image from the Netherlands, to which a maximum-likelihood classification with the Euclidean distance is applied. An error matrix is generated using an IKONOS image from the same area as ground truth. It is shown to which degree the BT model extends the K-statistic. A comparison with the Mahalanobis distance is made. Standardization is carried out to overcome problems emerging from the fact that a common BT model does not include the number of correctly classified pixels. The study shows how the BT model serves as an alternative to the usual k-statistic. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Accuracy assessment for remote sensing classification is commonly based on using an error matrix, or confusion table, which needs reference, or 'ground truthing', data to support. When undertaking change detection using numerous multi-temporal images, it is often difficult to make the accuracy assessment by the 'traditional' method, which typically requires simultaneous collection of reference data. In this study, we propose a new approach by arguing change rationality with post-classification comparison. Multitemporal Landsat TM images were classified for land use in an urban fringe area of Beijing, China and the post-classification comparison of these classified images shows change trajectories through the time series. These change trajectories were then analysed by assessing their rationality against a set of logical rules to separate cases of 'real land use change' and possible classification errors. The analvsis results show that the overall accuracy for land use change in the urban fringe area was 86%, with a fuzziness of 7%. Although it is argued that the uncertainty, still exists on classification accuracy assessed by this method. It nevertheless provides an alternative approach for more reasonable assessment when ideal simultaneous 'ground truthing' is not available. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (Auteur) The accuracy of remote sensed forest stand maps is traditionnally assessed by comparing a sample of the map data with actual ground conditions. Samples most often comprise clusters of pixels within homogeneous areas , therby avoiding problems associated with accuratly maping "edges" (e.g., transition areas between two forest types). Consequentely, they may well overstimable accuracy, but the degree of overestimation is unknown. This paper examines two important factors regarding accuracy assessment that are not well studied : the effect on estimates of accuracy of (1) the sampling method and (2) the exact placement of the samples. Overall accuracy, normalized accuracy, and the KHAT statistic are computed from error matrices generated from simple random sampling, stratified random sampling, and systematic sampling using totally random sample placement and samples chosen from homogeneous areas only. The results indicate that Kappa appears to be appropriate to use with systematic sampling and stratified random sampling as it is with simple random sampling, but suggest that sample placement may have more of an effect on estimates of accuracy than sampling method alone.
