[Termes IGN] taillisRésumé : (auteur) Key message : The study developed equations for predicting aboveground and belowground biomass of planted and coppiced Eucalyptus globulus in NW Spain. It was the first published work considering site effects on aboveground biomass and first work for predicting root biomass, for this species in this region, where it covers about 310,000 ha.
Context : Eucalyptus globulus is a species of great economic relevance, being increasingly used for bioenergy. In Galicia (NW Spain), where most of the E. globulus in the country is growing, there are scarce studies modeling aboveground biomass fractions of that species, together with a lack of information on its belowground biomass.
Aims : The objective of this study was to develop new and more accurate allometries for predicting E. globulus tree aboveground biomass fractions and coarse belowground biomass in NW Spain.
Methods : Aboveground biomass models were calibrated by two approaches: nonlinear seemingly unrelated regressions (NSUR), using tree and stand variables, and nonlinear mixed effects (nlme) equations adding the site factor effect. Validation was made with an independent dataset (85 trees). Belowground biomass equations were constructed for planted and coppiced trees.
Results : Crown length and dominant height substantially improved the precision in leaf and branch biomass estimation (NSUR). An added value of our study was the modeling of root/shoot ratio, as a function of diameter of planted and coppiced trees, for first time in this species.
Conclusion : This study confirms the importance of site and stand stage to explain aboveground biomass variability. [Termes IGN] sylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Industrial forest plantation expansion is dramatically impacting the environment (biodiversity, soil, water, etc.) and social sphere. Since the enactment of Decree Law 701 (DL 701) in 1974 under the military government of Augusto Pinochet, forestry practices in Chile have become more intensive (genetic manipulation, high yield clearcutting and short rotation). The law (and its successive updates) covers up to 75% of plantation costs and is the keystone of pine and eucalyptus forest expansion. This paper presents a pluriannual detection model for monitoring and characterizing the high cutting frequency of these timber plantations. Thirteen Landsat and SPOT images taken between 1976 and 2008 are used and combined with ground data (oblique aerial photography, GPS field surveys and field sheets). A trichromatic composition is built from spectral information taken from a Red and Mid-Infrared (MIR) wavelength along a temporal gradient of 32 years. This multi-temporal on-screen visual interpretation has led to a dynamic interpretation grid which reflects forest management stages in direct relation with pine and eucalyptus crop cycles. The method was tested on various time-steps covering the entire time period on two spatial scales — local and regional. All the spatio-temporal results are conclusive and the model established by remote sensing is of operational value. The height metrics provide the greatest stability, specifically the higher percentiles and the mode. Height metrics transfer more predictive power than density metrics.
Context : In forestry, there is an increasing development of aerial laser scanning (ALS). The flight missions that permit to record ALS point clouds are not yet standardized. Therefore, there is a need to identify the metrics that permit to infer robust forest stand estimates from the different point cloud acquisitions.
Aims : The aim of this study is to identify stable metrics derived from different ALS data sets to be used as independent variable in stand volume models.
Methods : Three different ALS data sets were taken from the same Eucalyptus plantation on the same day, each differing from the others in terms of flight altitude, laser power, and pulse frequency rate. Two sets of best predictive models were obtained for each data set based on two approaches: a basic approach using noncollinear metrics and an exhaustive search, and a second approach that added a pairwise Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to select stable metrics.
Results : Height metrics proved more stable, especially higher percentiles (>50 %) and the mode. Models developed with stable metrics had similar performance compared to the basic approach.
Conclusion : Percentiles higher than 50 % and the mode proved stable for that 6-year-old Eucalyptus plantation with a very homogeneous vertical structure. [Termes IGN] Pinus taedaRésumé : (auteur) Aboveground biomass estimation is critical in understanding forest contribution to regional carbon cycles. Despite the successful application of high spatial and spectral resolution sensors in aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation, there are challenges related to high acquisition costs, small area coverage, multicollinearity and limited availability. These challenges hamper the successful regional scale AGB quantification. The aim of this study was to assess the utility of the newly-launched medium-resolution multispectral Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) dataset with a large swath width, in quantifying AGB in a forest plantation. We applied different sets of spectral analysis (test I: spectral bands; test II: spectral vegetation indices and test III: spectral bands + spectral vegetation indices) in testing the utility of Landsat 8 OLI using two non-parametric algorithms: stochastic gradient boosting and the random forest ensembles. The results of the study show that the medium-resolution multispectral Landsat 8 OLI dataset provides better AGB estimates for Eucalyptus dunii, Eucalyptus grandis and Pinus taeda especially when using the extracted spectral information together with the derived spectral vegetation indices. We also noted that incorporating the optimal subset of the most important selected medium-resolution multispectral Landsat 8 OLI bands improved AGB accuracies. We compared medium-resolution multispectral Landsat 8 OLI AGB estimates with Landsat 7 ETM + estimates and the latter yielded lower estimation accuracies. Overall, this study demonstrates the invaluable potential and strength of applying the relatively affordable and readily available newly-launched medium-resolution Landsat 8 OLI dataset, with a large swath width (185-km) in precisely estimating AGB. This strength of the Landsat OLI dataset is crucial especially in sub-Saharan Africa where high-resolution remote sensing data availability remains a challenge. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Light detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is becoming an increasingly used tool to support decision-making processes within forest operations. Area-based methods that derive information on the condition of a forest based on the distribution of points within the canopy have been proven to produce reliable and consistent results. Individual tree-based methods, however, are not yet used operationally in the industry. This is due to problems in detecting and delineating individual trees under varying forest conditions resulting in an underestimation of the stem count and biases toward larger trees. The aim of this paper is to use high-resolution LiDAR data captured from a small multirotor unmanned aerial vehicle platform to determine the influence of the detection algorithm and point density on the accuracy of tree detection and delineation. The study was conducted in a four-year-old Eucalyptus globulus stand representing an important stage of growth for forest management decision-making process. Five different tree detection routines were implemented, which delineate trees directly from the point cloud, voxel space, and the canopy height model (CHM). The results suggest that both algorithm and point density are important considerations in the accuracy of the detection and delineation of individual trees. The best performing method that utilized both the CHM and the original point cloud was able to correctly detect 98% of the trees in the study area. Increases in point density (from 5 to 50 points/m2) lead to significant improvements (of up to 8%) in the rate of omission for algorithms that made use of the high density of the data.
