[Termes IGN] rayonnement proche infrarougeRésumé : (Auteur) This study integrated environmental variables together with high spectral resolution WorldView-2 imagery to detect and map Thaumastocoris peregrinus damage in Eucalypt plantation forests in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The WorldView-2 bands, vegetation indices and environmental variables were entered separately into PLS regression models to predict T. peregrinus damage. The datasets were then integrated to test the collective strength in predicting T. peregrinus damage. Important variables were identified by variable importance (VIP) scores and were re-entered into a PLS regression model. The VIP model was then extrapolated to map the severity of damage and predicted T. peregrinus damage with an R2 value of 0.71 and a RMSE of 3.26% on an independent test dataset. The red edge and near-infrared bands of the WorldView-2 sensor together with the temperature dataset were identified as important variables in predicting T. peregrinus damage. The results indicate the potential of integrating WorldView-2 data and environmental variables to improve the mapping and monitoring of insect outbreaks in plantation forests. The result is critical for plantation health monitoring using a new sensor which contains important vegetation wavelengths. [Termes IGN] strate végétaleRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents a robust approach for characterization of multi-layered forests using airborne laser scanning (ALS) data. Fuel mapping or biomass estimation requires knowing the diversity and boundaries of the forest patches, as well as their spatial pattern. This includes the thickness of the main vegetation layers, but also the spatial arrangement and size of the individual plants that compose each stratum. In order to decompose the ALS point cloud into genuine 3-D segments corresponding to individual vegetation features, such as shrubs or tree crowns, we apply a statistical approach based on the mean shift algorithm. The segments are progressively assigned to a forest layer: ground vegetation, understory or overstory. Our method relies on a single biophysically meaningful parameter, the kernel bandwidth, which is related to the local forest structure. It is validated on 44 plots of a Portuguese forest, composed mainly of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) and maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) trees. The number of detected trees varies with the dominance position: from 98.6% for the dominant trees to 12.8% for the suppressed trees. Linear regression models explain up to 70% of the variability associated with ground vegetation and understory height. [Termes IGN] strate végétaleRésumé : (auteur) Plant communities display a vertical structure based on the size and growth pattern of the dominant species. To a large extent, this pattern, called vertical stratification, depends on the climatic zone. Vertical structure analysis consists in detecting the number of layers and their limits within a forest stand. So far, there is a lack of robust approaches applied to airborne laser scanning (ALS) data that properly segment the different strata of forests having complex structures. In this study, we propose a procedure to characterize vertical forest stratification based on the mean shift (MS) algorithm. The MS is a non-linear filter that searches for local density maxima (modes). It is a non-parametric and unsupervised approach, which only requires a single criterion, the kernel bandwidth. Since the forest point cloud is a multi-modal distribution, the MS is used to find the modes which are supposed to be the barycenters of vegetation features. Once achieved, the modes are grouped together according to height range and the corresponding ALS points are assigned to each vegetation strata. Due to their complex pattern, using a single scale over the whole space is not recommended for the analysis of such environments. On this basis, the modes are computed using a variable kernel bandwidth according to the forest pattern. To depict such a pattern, we propose a new technique that segments the main forest layers at the plot level: overstory, understory, and surface vegetation. The procedure has been carried out on 45 plots of a Portuguese forest mainly composed of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and pine (Pinus pinaster) trees that can be strongly populated by understory and surface vegetation. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Environmental determinants of wood properties variation were examined in Eucalyptus globulus, a globally important hardwood plantation species, in southern Tasmania, Australia. Radial variation in wood properties, measured with the SilviScan system, were re-scaled from distance to time abscissa using stem radial growth data measured with dendrometers. With this re-scaled data it was possible to evaluate how water availability and temperature affected wood density, microfibril angle (MFA) and fibre and vessel transverse dimensions in irrigated and non-irrigated trees. Wood density, fibre radial diameter and MFA were sensitive to water availability. Wood density increased and fibre radial diameter decreased in response to reduced water availability. When high water availability was maintained, wood density was negatively correlated with temperature. Together, temperature and soil matric potential explained about 60% of temporal variation in wood density variation. In contrast MFA was not related to temperature but decreased with increasing water stress. Slower growing trees also had lower MFA than faster growing trees. Slower growing trees had a larger number of vessels per unit area of wood than faster growing trees within this even aged stand. However, vessel radius to the 4th power was significantly higher in faster growing trees than in slower growing trees. Overall, E. globulus wood properties were sensitive to temporal changes in environmental conditions (particularly water availability) and associated growth rates. The data provided support for the hypothesis that growth rates are hydraulically mediated.
