However, the traditional statistics-based classification methods which have been successfully applied to multispectral data in the past are not as effective as to hyperspectral data. One major reason is that the number of spectral bands is too large relative to the number of training samples. This problem is caused by curse of dimensionality, which refers to the fact that the sample size required for training a specific classifier grows exponentially with the number of spectral bands. A simple but sometimes very effective way to overcome this problem is to reduce the dimensionality of hyperspectral images. This can be done by feature extraction that a small number of salient features are extracted from the hyperspectral data when confronted with a limited size of training samples. In this paper, a new feature extraction method based on the matching pursuit (MP) is proposed to extract useful features for the classification of hyperspectral images. The matching pursuit algorithm uses a greedy strategy to find an adaptive and optimal representation of the hyperspectral data iteratively from a highly redundant wavelet packets dictionary. An AVIRIS data set was tested to illustrate the classification performance after matching pursuit method was applied. In addition, some existing feature extraction methods based on the wavelet transform are also compared with the matching pursuit method in terms of the classification accuracies. The experiment results showed that the wavelet and matching pursuit method exactly provide an effective tool for feature extraction. The classification problem caused by curse of dimensionality can be avoided by matching pursuit and wavelet-based dimensionality reduction. Initially, a laser point cluster in 3D object space was recognized as an isolated building object if all the member points were similarly attributed as building points by investigating the height property of laser points and the normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI) driven from IKONOS imagery. As modelling cues, rectilinear lines around building outlines collected by either data-driven or model-driven manner were integrated in order to compensate the weakness of both methods. Finally, a full description of building outlines was accomplished by merging convex polygons, which were obtained as a building region was hierarchically divided by the extracted lines using the Binary Space Partitioning (BSP) tree. The system performance was evaluated by objective evaluation metrics in comparison to the Ordnance Survey's MasterMap®. This evaluation showed the delineation performance of up to 0.11 (the branching factor) and the detection percentage of 90.1% (the correctness) and the overall quality of 80.5%. [Termes IGN] requête spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Searching for relevant knowledge across heterogeneous geospatial databases requires an extensive knowledge of the semantic meaning of images, a keen eye for visual patterns, and efficient strategies for collecting and analyzing data with minimal human intervention. In this paper, we present our recently developed content-based multimodal Geospatial Information Retrieval and Indexing System (GeoIRIS) which includes automatic feature extraction, visual content mining from large-scale image databases, and high-dimensional database indexing for fast retrieval. Using these underpinnings, we have developed techniques for complex queries that merge information from heterogeneous geospatial databases, retrievals of objects based on shape and visual characteristics, analysis of multiobject relationships for the retrieval of objects in specific spatial configurations, and semantic models to link low-level image features with high-level visual descriptors. GeoIRIS brings this diverse set of technologies together into a coherent system with an aim of allowing image analysts to more rapidly identify relevant imagery. GeoIRIS is able to answer analysts' questions in seconds, such as "given a query image, show me database satellite images that have similar objects and spatial relationship that are within a certain radius of a landmark." [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Airborne hyperspectral remote sensing was applied to agricultural land in the Miura Peninsula, near the metropolis of Tokyo in Japan. The study area is characterized by complicated land use patches, which is the general characteristic of most agricultural lands in Japan. Several feature extraction/classification methods were examined in classifying the land use and plant species. The results showed that decision boundary feature extraction (DBFE) was better than principal component analysis (PCA) as the feature extraction method. Moreover, the pre-classification process using NDVI that separates the whole study area into vegetated area and non-vegetated areas also improved the classification accuracy. After the pre-procedures, the land use and plant species were finally mapped by maximum likelihood classification (MLC) or extraction and classification of homogeneous objects (ECHO). The best kappa (overall accuracy) of classification was 0.914 (92.4%) and 0.924 (93.3%) for MLC and ECHO, respectively. The best accuracies of each category for the image were 79.5% to 100% for plant species (watermelon, pumpkin, marigold, grass and tree), 88.7% to 100% for soil types, 97.8% for concrete, and 99.4% for vinyl-mulches. Although, built-up area has low estimation accuracy, this did not affect the overall classification accuracy because it covers only a very small area. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate time registration, georeferencing, and instantaneous feature extraction are important challenges for real-time mapping systems. The Geodetic Engineering Laboratory (TOPO) at the EPFL has designed a mobile platform to automatically determine the geometry of the road centerline: the Photobus. Our system fully exploits the concept of direct georeferencing by combining navigation data with video sequences grabbed by a downward-pointing camera. This paper presents the realization of the authors' vision of real-time mapping that encompasses a mobile acquisition platform dedicated for a well-defined task. To sustain the high performance requirements of such a data-critical application, the use of custom-made software based on open-source libraries is a preferred approach of implementation. In this context, we investigate the suitability of using a close-to-nadiral CMOS camera to extract the road geometry with a reliable and almost latency-free methodology. We will first focus on the frame-grabbing process for which an open-source approach guarantees the versatile integration of the camera into the mapping platform. The second part of the paper discusses the process of extracting and georeferencing features of interest in an automatic manner. To open perspectives, we will investigate an extension of the surveying capabilities of the Photobus with stereovision.
