[Termes IGN] modèle 3D de l'espace urbainRésumé : (Auteur) The paper focuses mainly on extraction of important topographic objects, like buildings and roads, that have received much attention the last decade. As main input data, aerial imagery is considered, although other data, like from laser scanner, SAR and high-resolution satellite imagery, can be also used. After a short review of recent image analysis trends, and strategy and overall system aspects of knowledge-based image analysis, the paper focuses on aspects of knowledge that can be used for object extraction: types of knowledge, problems in using existing knowledge, knowledge representation and management, current and possible use of knowledge, upgrading and augmenting of knowledge. Finally, an overview on commercial systems regarding automated object extraction and use of a priori knowledge is given. In spite of many remaining unsolved problems and need for further research and development, use of knowledge and semi-automation are the only viable alternatives towards development of useful object extraction systems, as some commercial systems on building extraction and 3D city modelling as well as advanced, practically oriented research have shown. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (Auteur) The extraction of road networks from aerial images is one of the current challenges in digital photogrammetry and computer vision. In this paper, we present a practical system for 3D road network reconstruction from aerial images using knowledgebased image analysis. In contrast to other approaches, the developed system integrates processing of color image data and information from digital spatial databases, extracts and fuses multiple object cues, takes into account context information, employs existing knowledge, rules and models, and treats each road subclass accordingly. The key of the system is the use of knowledge as much as possible to increase success rate and reliability of the results, working in 2D images and 3D object space, and use of 2D and 3D interaction when needed. Another advantage of the developed system is that it can correctly and reliably handle problematic areas caused by shadows and occlusions. This work is part of a project to improve and update the 1:25,000 vector maps of Switzerland. The system has been implemented as a stand-alone software package, and has been tested on a large number of images with different landscape. In this paper, various parts of the developed system are discussed, and the results of our system in recent benchmark tests conducted independently by our project partner in Switzerland, and the test results with black and white images in a test site in Belgium are presented together with the system performance evaluation. [Termes IGN] segment de droiteRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a novel method for semiautomatically constructing building models from photogrammetric 3D line segments of buildings, i.e., their roof edges. The method, which we call "Split MergeShape" (SMS), can treat both complete line segments as well as incomplete line segments due to image occlusions. The proposed method is comprised of five major parts: (1) the creation of the Region of Interest (ROI) and preprocessing, (2) splitting the model by using the 3D line segments to construct a combination of roof primitives, (3) merging connected roof primitives to complete the boundary of each building, (4) shaping each building rooftop by connected coplanar analysis and coplanar fitting, and (5) quality assurance. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can soundly rebuild the topology from the 3D line segments and reconstruct building models with up to a 98 percent success rate. The proposed SMS method has been proved reliable and effective, with a high degree of automation, even when groups of connected buildings or complex types of buildings are processed.
