[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) The objectives of this research are to develop robust methods for segmentation of multitemporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical data and to investigate the fusion of multitemporal ENVISAT advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) and Chinese HJ-1B multispectral data for detailed urban land-cover mapping. Eight-date multiangle ENVISAT ASAR images and one-date HJ-1B charge-coupled device image acquired over Beijing in 2009 are selected for this research. The edge-aware region growing and merging (EARGM) algorithm is developed for segmentation of SAR and optical data. Edge detection using a Sobel filter is applied on SAR and optical data individually, and a majority voting approach is used to integrate all edge images. The edges are then used in a segmentation process to ensure that segments do not grow over edges. The segmentation is influenced by minimum and maximum segment sizes as well as the two homogeneity criteria, namely, a measure of color and a measure of texture. The classification is performed using support vector machines. The results show that our EARGM algorithm produces better segmentation than eCognition, particularly for built-up classes and linear features. The best classification result (80%) is achieved using the fusion of eight-date ENVISAT ASAR and HJ-1B data. This represents 5%, 11%, and 14% improvements over eCognition, HJ-1B, and ASAR classifications, respectively. The second best classification is achieved using fusion of four-date ENVISAT ASAR and HJ-1B data (78%). The result indicates that fewer multitemporal SAR images can achieve similar classification accuracy if multitemporal multiangle dual-look-direction SAR data are carefully selected. [Termes IGN] vectorisationRésumé : (Auteur) A pedestrian network is a topological map that contains the geometric relationship between pedestrian path segments (e.g., sidewalk, crosswalk, footpath), which is needed in a variety of applications, such as pedestrian navigation services. However, current pedestrian networks are not widely available. In an effort to provide an automatic means for creating pedestrian networks, this paper presents a methodology for extracting pedestrian network from aerial and laser images. The methodology consists of data preparation and four steps: object filtering, pedestrian path region extraction, pedestrian network construction, and raster to vector conversion. An experiment, using ten images, was conducted to evaluate the performance of the methodology. Evaluation results indicate that the methodology can extract sidewalk, crosswalk, footpath, and building entrances; it collects pedestrian networks with 61 percent geometrical completeness, 67.35 percent geometrical correctness, 71 percent topological completeness and 51.38 percent topological correctness. The 3D model is produced automatically by fusing a two-dimensional (2D) national object-oriented database describing the physical landscape and the national high-resolution height model of the Netherlands. Semantic constraints are introduced to correctly model 3D objects. Three areas from different regions in the Netherlands have been processed in order to develop, improve, and test the automatic generation of a national 3D city and landscape model. Specific attention has been paid to exceptional cases that may occur in a nationwide dataset. Based on the test results, the Kadaster, the national agency in the Netherlands responsible for the production of nation wide geo-information, decided that it is feasible to produce a national 3D city and landscape model that fulfills the specifications that were defined as part of this study. Future research is identified to make the results further ready for practice. [Termes IGN] service web géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Mapping vegetation height over large areas presents a problem of scale: height varies with the individual tree or stand, but the resolution of available datasets is too low to characterize this variability sufficiently for many applications. We address this problem by fusing 1 km resolution canopy height data derived from satellite-based laser altimetry with higher-resolution land-cover data, resulting in 30 m resolution estimates of canopy height. These are downscaled further to 1 m resolution by simulating individual trees. A web service architecture is used, which allows processing to occur on demand without preprocessing large datasets. We compared the resulting canopy volumes to reference airborne lidar data from 262 randomly located 1 km2 areas within nine study sites. Results at 30 m resolution show an RMSE of 33 percent of the mean reference volume and an R2 of 0.77; at 1 m the RMSE is 66 percent and the R2 is 0.38. [Termes IGN] zone saillante 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Terrestrial laser scanning is becoming a standard technology for 3D modeling of complex scenes. Laser scans contain detailed geometric information, but still require interpretation of the data for making it useable for mapping purposes. A fundamental step in the transformation of the data into objects involves their segmentation into consistent units. Such units should follow some predefined rules, and result in salient regions guided by the desire that the individual segments represent object or object-parts within the scene. Nonetheless, due to the scene complexity and the variety of objects, a segmentation using only a single cue does not suffice. Considering the availability of additional data sources such as color images, more information can be integrated in the data partitioning process and ultimately into the reconstruction scheme. We propose segmentation of terrestrial laser scanning data by the integration of range and color content and by using multiple cues. This concept raises questions regarding their mode of integration, and definition of the expected outcome. We show, that while individual segmentation based on given cues have their own limitations, their integration provide a more coherent partitioning that has better potential for further processing. Experiments show that the proposed segmentation methodology yield physically meaningful segments, which surpass those obtained via segmentation of the individual channels.
