[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Distance is a fundamental concept in spatial sciences. Spatial distance is a very important parameter to measure the relative positions between spatial objects and to indicate the degree of similarity between neighbouring objects. Indeed, spatial distance plays an important role in many areas such as neighbourhood analysis, structural similarity measure, image (or object) matching, clustering analysis, and so on. In this paper, existing computational models for the distance between spatial objects are evaluated and their problems pointed out ; then, the concept of the Hausdorff distance is introduced as a metric indicator for different types of spatial objects. This distance is extended to a uniform representation by the introduction of the quantile, leading to the extended Hausdorff distance. Indeed, the so-called extended Hausdorff distance is, in fact, a kind of metric characterized by the minimum distance, the Hausdorff distance, and the median Hausdorff distance. The first two can be used for measuring the dispersion and the last one for measuring the central tendency of the distance distribution between spatial objects. A method termed the b.epsi-buffer has been proposed for the computation of the median Hausdorff distance. Finally, potential applications are discussed. [Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) At the dynamic coastal fringe, numerous processes interact with local morphology. In soft-cliff environments, this can often lead to the occurrence of coastal geohazards. These can pose a major threat to property and cultural heritage, and an effective monitoring strategy is therefore essential. While contemporary monitoring techniques have been applied, these are often unsuitable in isolation. This paper presents an integrated approach, with the development of weighted surface matching software enabling reliable dataset fusion and multi-temporal change detection, even where significant surface differences exist. Evaluation of this approach is presented and discussed. [Termes IGN] spectrométrieRésumé : (Auteur) A comprehensive canopy characterization of forests is derived from the combined remote sensing signal of imaging spectrometry and large footprint LIDAR. The inversion of two linked physically based Radiative Transfer Models (RTM) provided the platform for synergistically exploiting the specific and independent information dimensions obtained by the two earth observation systems. Due to its measurement principle, LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) is particularly suited to assess the horizontal and vertical canopy structure of forests, while the spectral measurements of imaging spectrometry are specifically rich on information for biophysical and -chemical canopy properties. In the presented approach, the specific information content inherent to the observations of the respective sensor was not only able to complement the canopy characterization, but also helped to solve the ill-posed problem of the RTM inversion. The theoretical feasibility of the proposed earth observation concept has been tested on a synthetic data set generated by a forest growth model for a wide range of forest stands. Robust estimates on forest canopy characteristics were achieved, ranging from maximal tree height, fractional cover (fcover), Leaf Area Index (LAI) to the foliage chlorophyll and water content. The introduction of prior information on the canopy structure derived from large footprint LIDAR observations significantly improved the retrieval performance relative to estimates based solely on spectral information. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) This thesis examines the feasibility of a forest inventory method based on two-phase sampling in estimating forest attributes at the stand or substand levels for forest management purposes. The method is based on multi-source forest inventory combining auxiliary data consisting of remote sensing imagery or other geographic information and field measurements. Auxiliary data are utilized as first-phase data for covering all inventory units. Various methods were examined for improving the accuracy of the forest estimates. Pre-processing of auxiliary data in the form of correcting the spectral properties of aerial imagery was examined (I), as was the selection of aerial image features for estimating forest attributes (II). Various spatial units were compared for extracting image features in a remote sensing aided forest inventory utilizing very high resolution imagery (III). A number of data sources were combined and different weighting procedures were tested in estimating forest attributes (IV, V). Correction of the spectral properties of aerial images proved to be a straightforward and advantageous method for improving the correlation between the image features and the measured forest attributes. Testing different image features that can be extracted from aerial photographs (and other very high resolution images) showed that the images contain a wealth of relevant information that can be extracted only by utilizing the spatial organization of the image pixel values. Furthermore, careful selection of image features for the inventory task generally gives better results than inputting all extractable features to the estimation procedure. When the spatial units for extracting very high resolution image features were examined, an approach based on image segmentation generally showed advantages compared with a traditional sample plot-based approach. Combining several data sources resulted in more accurate estimates than any of the individual data sources alone. The best combined estimate can be derived by weighting the estimates produced by the individual data sources by the inverse values of their mean square errors. Despite the fact that the plot-level estimation accuracy in two-phase sampling inventory can be improved in many ways, the accuracy of forest estimates based mainly on single-view satellite and aerial imagery is a relatively poor basis for making stand-level management decisions. [Termes IGN] théorie de Dempster-ShaferRésumé : (auteur) A geographical data matching based on the Theory of Evidence is presented in this paper. Geographical data are imperfect and this imperfection should be taken into account in the matching process. Data are matched by combining three criteria: the location, the places names and the nature of the objects. Experiments are made on relief points. Precision and recall equal to almost 100% are obtained.
