[Termes IGN] transformation rapide de FourierRésumé : (Auteur) Two problems can arise in analyzing Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). Firstly, one interest region could be patched by several partly overlapping models that present similar accuracies and spatial resolutions; they should be merged in one unified model. Moreover, even when the interest region is completely covered by one model, local data with better accuracy could cover partial areas and should be properly merged. All these problems have been addressed within Helvetia-Italy Digital Elevation Model, a project funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). One specific aim of the project was the creation and the publication of a unified DEM for a part of the Alps between Italy and Switzerland. The interest area is prevalently mountainous, with elevations that range from about 200 to 4600 m. Various elevation datasets were available that were gridded with different spatial resolutions, in different reference frames and coordinates. Moreover, one high resolution LiDAR model was available for some areas. Firstly, a validation was performed that allowed the identification of few blunders and confirmed the general accuracy of the input data. Two DEMs have been produced. Both of them cover the whole project area (boundaries λ = 7.80° East and λ = 10.70° East, φ = 45.10° North and φ = 46.70° North) and are gridded in ETRF2000 geographical coordinates, with a spatial resolution of 2 × 10−4 degrees. The former (named HD-1) has been obtained by interpolating and merging all the low resolution models on a new common grid. HD-1 has been locally corrected by the LiDAR model, where it was available; to avoid sharp discontinuities, the corrections have been filtered by Fast Fourier Transform before applying them. The resulting model has been called HD-2. HD-1 and HD-2 are published by an open access geoservice. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Recent advances in 3D scanning technologies allow us to acquire accurate and dense 3D scan data of large-scale environments efficiently. Currently, there are various methods for acquiring large-scale 3D scan data, such as Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS), Airborne Laser Scanning, Terrestrial Laser Scanning, photogrammetry and Structure from Motion (SfM). Especially, MLS is useful to acquire dense point clouds of road and road-side objects, and SfM is a powerful technique to reconstruct meshes with textures from a set of digital images. In this research, a registration method of point clouds from vehicle-based MLS (MLS point cloud), and textured meshes from the SfM of aerial photographs (SfM mesh), is proposed for creating high-quality surface models of urban areas by combining them. In general, SfM mesh has non-scale information; therefore, scale, position, and orientation of the SfM mesh are adjusted in the registration process. In our method, first, 2D feature points are extracted from both SfM mesh and MLS point cloud. This process consists of ground- and building-plane extraction by region growing, random sample consensus and least square method, vertical edge extraction by detecting intersections between the planes, and feature point extraction by intersection tests between the ground plane and the edges. Then, the corresponding feature points between the MLS point cloud and the SfM mesh are searched efficiently, using similarity invariant features and hashing. Next, the coordinate transformation is applied to the SfM mesh so that the ground planes and corresponding feature points are adjusted. Finally, scaling Iterative Closest Point algorithm is applied for accurate registration. Experimental results for three data-sets show that our method is effective for the registration of SfM mesh and MLS point cloud of urban areas including buildings. [Termes IGN] qualité d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Remote sensing systems equipped with multispectral and hyperspectral sensors are able to capture images of the surface of the Earth at different wavelengths. In these systems, hyperspectral sensors typically provide images with a high spectral resolution but a reduced spatial resolution, while on the contrary, multispectral sensors are able to produce images with a rich spatial resolution but a poor spectral resolution. Due to this reason, different fusion algorithms have been proposed during the last years in order to obtain remotely sensed images with enriched spatial and spectral resolutions by wisely combining the data acquired for the same scene by multispectral and hyperspectral sensors. However, the algorithms so far proposed that are able to obtain fused images with a good spatial and spectral quality require a formidable amount of computationally complex operations that cannot be executed in parallel, which clearly prevent the utilization of these algorithms in applications under real-time constraints in which high-performance parallel-based computing systems are normally required for accelerating the overall process. On the other hand, there are other state-of-the-art algorithms that are capable of fusing these images with a lower computational effort but at the cost of decreasing the quality of the resultant fused image. In this paper, a new algorithm named computationally efficient algorithm for fusing multispectral and hyperspectral images (CoEf-MHI) is proposed in order to obtain a high-quality image from hyperspectral and multispectral images of the same scene with a low computational effort. The proposed CoEf-MHI algorithm is based on incorporating the spatial details of the multispectral image into the hyperspectral image, without introducing spectral distortions. To achieve this goal, the CoEf-MHI algorithm first spatially upsamples, by means of a bilinear interpolation, the input hyperspectral image to the spatial resolution of the input multispectral image, and then, it independently refines each pixel of the resulting image by linearly combining the multispectral and hyperspectral pixels in its neighborhood. The simulations performed in this work with different images demonstrate that our proposal is much more efficient than state-of-the-art approaches, being this efficiency understood as the ratio between the quality of the fused image and the computational effort required to obtain such image. [Termes IGN] image LandsatRésumé : (auteur) Aboveground forest biomass estimation is an integral component for climate change, carbon stocks assessment, biodiversity and forest health. LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), specifically NASA’s Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor (LVIS), PALSAR (Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar), and Landsat data have been previously used in biomass estimation with promising results when used individually. In this manuscript, all three products are jointly utilized for the first time to assess their importance for deciduous biomass estimation. Results indicate that LVIS inputs are ranked as most important followed by PALSAR inputs. Particularly for PALSAR, scenes acquired in May and August were ranked higher compared to other months. [Termes IGN] modèle de géopotentielRésumé : (auteur) In gravity field modeling, fused models that utilize satellite, airborne and terrestrial gravity observations are often employed to deal with erroneous terrestrially derived gravity datasets. These terrestrial datasets may suffer from long-wavelength systematic errors and inhomogeneous data coverage, which are not prevalent in airborne and satellite datasets. Airborne gravity acquisition plays an essential role in gravity field modeling, providing valuable information of the Earth’s gravity field at medium and short wavelengths. Thus, assessing the impact of airborne gravity data to fused gravity field models is important for identifying problematic regions. Six study regions that represent different gravity field variability and terrestrial data point-density characteristics are investigated to quantify the impact of airborne gravity data to fused gravity field models. The numerical assessments of these representative regions resulted in predictions of airborne gravity impact for individual states and provinces in the USA and Canada, respectively. Prediction results indicate that, depending on the terrestrial data point-density and gravity field variability, the expected impact of airborne gravity can reach up to 3mGal (in terms of standard deviation) in Canada and Alaska (over areas of 1∘×1∘). However, in the mainland US region, small changes are expected (0.2–0.4 mGal over areas of 1∘×1∘) due to the availability of high spatial resolution terrestrial data. These results can serve as a guideline for setting airborne gravity data acquisition priorities and for improving future planning of airborne gravity surveys.
