[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Forest management is under intensifying ecological and societal pressures amid the current geological epoch, which some see becoming the Anthropocene. These pressures extend to temporal and physical scales typical of geology; however, integrating geological processes into forest management has lagged behind the inclusion of shorter-term and surficial ecosystem processes. As such, we examine the field of critical zone science for connections that translate geologic knowledge to forest management and planning. Earth’s critical zone is the thin near-surface zone spanning from the bottom of circulating groundwater to the top of the atmospheric boundary layer of forest canopies. We explore four case studies from regions of the U.S.A. to highlight how recent critical zone discoveries inform contemporary forest management challenges. Some examples of management-relevant research include mediation of the impacts of climate change on forest productivity across gradients in geology, aspect, and topography; the role of bedrock water storage on drought resistance; hydrology-vegetation interactions following pest outbreaks; and quantification of water partitioning and erosion following fire. The accelerated pace of critical zone discovery has been synchronous with increased availability of open-source data resources for forest managers to expand this framework in management and planning. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) This study focused on monitoring the water status of vegetation and soil by exploiting the synergy of optical and microwave satellite data with the aim of improving the knowledge of water cycle in cultivated lands in Egyptian Delta and Tunisian areas. Environmental analysis approaches based on optical and synthetic aperture radar data were carried out to set up the basis for future implementation of practical and cost-effective methods for sustainable water use in agriculture. Long-term behaviors of vegetation indices were thus analyzed between 2000 and 2018. By using SAR data from Sentinel-1, an Artificial Neural Network-based algorithm was implemented for estimating soil moisture and monthly maps for 2018 have been generated to be compared with information derived from optical indices. Moreover, a novel drought severity index was developed and applied to available data. The index was obtained by combining vegetation soil difference index, derived from optical data, and soil moisture content derived from SAR data. The proposed index was found capable of complementing optical and microwave sensitivity to drought-related parameters, although ground data are missing for correctly validating the results, by capturing drought patterns and their temporal evolution better than indices based only on microwave or optical data. [Termes IGN] processus de hiérarchisation analytiqueRésumé : (auteur) A precise map of the dispersion of the groundwater potential across each watershed can help decision-makers to exert optimal water management in each region. In this research, the potential of groundwater resources in both the Zanjanrood Catchment and the Tarom Region, located in the northwest of Iran, has been studied. Seven effective criteria including slope, land-use, drainage density, spring density, lithology, lineament density, and rainfall are considered. Criteria were first weighted using the Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) method and then overlaid by the Technique for Order Preferences by Similarity to Ideal (TOPSIS) model. Finally, the spatial zoning map of groundwater potential was obtained in four categories. A sensitivity analysis was performed to determine the influence of each criterion on the obtained map. The model was verified using both the spatial distribution of the high-discharged production wells and the geophysical-based geoelectric field surveys. The results indicate that the high-discharged wells (>40 l/s) in both regions are dispersed predominantly in the very good zone and, in several cases, in the good zone. Besides, the results from the two-dimensional models of resistivity and induced polarization of geoelectrical field survey are inappropriate agreement with those from the TOPSIS method. Notably, there is no suitable potential zone of groundwater in the surrounding highlands to be used in the future for drinking purposes since the highlands water supply is a strategic supply for drinking. The strategies employed in this study, the results of GIS modeling, and the geoelectrical analysis can be considered for sustainable development of similar arid and semi-arid areas since groundwater is considered as the main supplier of water in such regions. [Termes IGN] zone tropicale humideRésumé : (auteur) Geospatial techniques and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) play a crucial role in the planning and management of land and water resources. GIS-based MCDA technique "Catastrophe theory" has been recently proposed for evaluating groundwater potential. However, the major limitation of "Catastrophe theory" is that only quantitative factors/thematic layers can be used for assessing groundwater potential, though qualitative factors are equally important. To overcome this inherent limitation, a novel GIS-based MCDA approach named "Hybrid Catastrophe" technique is proposed in this study. The "Hybrid Catastrophe" technique integrates the original "Catastrophe theory" with the "Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP)" to take into account both qualitative and quantitative thematic layers for assessing groundwater potential, thereby improving the reliability and versatility of the original Catastrophe technique. The applicability of "Hybrid Catastrophe" technique is demonstrated through a case study wherein 8 influential thematic layers (both quantitative and qualitative) were considered for assessing groundwater potential. The four quantitative layers were assigned weights based on the "Catastrophe theory" and the remaining four qualitative layers were assigned weights based on the "AHP theory". These thematic layers were integrated in GIS to delineate groundwater potential zones. The "Hybrid Catastrophe" technique yields four groundwater potential zones in the study area: (i) "very good" (covering 16% of the study area), (ii) "good" (54%), (iii) "moderate" (29%) and (iv) "poor" (1%) and its accuracy was found to be 77% that is reasonably high. The proposed "Hybrid Catastrophe" technique is versatile and it can be successfully applied to other parts of the world for evaluating groundwater potential at diverse spatial scales irrespective of agro-climatic, hydrologic and hydrogeologic conditions.
