[Termes IGN] sous-boisRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose a decision tree algorithm to characterize spatial extent and spectral features of invasive plant species (i.e., guava, Madagascar cardamom, and Molucca raspberry) in tropical rainforests by integrating datasets from passive and active remote sensing sensors. The decision tree algorithm is based on a number of input variables including matching score and infeasibility images from Mixture Tuned Matched Filtering (MTMF), land-cover maps, tree height information derived from high resolution stereo imagery, polarimetric feature images, Radar Forest Degradation Index (RFDI), polarimetric and InSAR coherence and phase difference images. Spatial distributions of the study organisms are mapped using pixel-based Winner-Takes-All (WTA) algorithm, object oriented feature extraction, spectral unmixing, and compared with the newly developed decision tree approach. Our results show that the InSAR phase difference and PolInSAR HH–VV coherence images of L-band PALSAR data are the most important variables following the MTMF outputs in mapping subcanopy invasive plant species in tropical rainforest. We also show that the three types of invasive plants alone occupy about 17.6% of the Betampona Nature Reserve (BNR) while mixed forest, shrubland and grassland areas are summed to 11.9% of the reserve. This work presents the first systematic attempt to evaluate forest degradation, habitat quality and invasive plant statistics in the BNR, and provides significant insights as to management strategies for the control of invasive plants and conversation in the reserve. [Termes IGN] incendie de forêtRésumé : (Auteur) Post-wildfire management practices can greatly influence vegetation condition and dynamics, and are crucial in Mediterranean erosion-prone poor soil sites. Acquiring accurate ground inventory data is time-consuming, expensive and limited to small areas; but lidar data can be used to assess the impact of fires, and also to determine the convenient silvicultural measurements which should be carried out for site restoration. The aim of this paper was to assess the post-fire regeneration status of the vegetation in Sant Llorenç del Munt massif after a wildfire in summer 2003 by modeling the relationship between lidar height bins and canopy height model (CHM) with field data. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) prediction models provided estimations of vegetation fraction cover, average height (HM) over 1.30 m and number of stems over 1.30 m, with Pearson r values between 0.18 and 0.83. Classification models built with the same variables allowed separating two ground-based regeneration classes (good and scarce regeneration) with an approximate accuracy of 83 to 76 percent (model building and validation data, respectively). [Termes IGN] penteRésumé : (Auteur) Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) has become a valuable tool in forest inventory because it yields accurate measurements of tree heights. However, tree height can be accurate only if the height of the ground, i. e., the Digital Terrain Model (dtm) is first accurately established. Although great advances have been made in lidar technology over the past decade, filtering lidar data for Digital Terrain Model (dtm) interpolation is still a challenge, especially in steep and complex terrain with forest cover. Several algorithms proposed in the literature address this challenge but their performance deteriorates with the decreasing point density caused by the presence of forest cover and steep slopes. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive algorithm for dtm interpolation from lidar data in steep terrain with forest cover. The algorithm partitions the input data and estimates a section of the dtm by fitting a linear or quadratic trend surface, or uses cubic spline interpolation depending on the complexity of the section of terrain. The performance of the algorithm is tested in three ways: by visual assessment, by comparison of the tree-height estimates produced using the generated dtm with those obtained using field survey, and by use of International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (isprs) test data. Test results show that the algorithm can cope well with steep slopes and low lidar point densities, giving a more accurate estimate of average tree height compared to conventional algorithms. The algorithm can be used for dtm extraction in large scale forest inventory projects in challenging environments–complex terrain and low lidar point densities. In this article, we proceed to compare the performance of these two methods in the estimation of plot-level forest variables. Dense point clouds extracted from aerial frame images were used to estimate the plot-level forest variables needed in a forest inventory covering 89 plots. We analyzed images with 60% and 80% forward overlaps and used test plots with off-nadir angles of between 0° and 20°. When compared to reference ground measurements, the airborne laser scanning (ALS) data proved to be the most accurate: it yielded root mean square error (RMSE) values of 6.55% for mean height, 11.42% for mean diameter, and 20.72% for volume. When we applied a forward overlap of 80%, the corresponding results from aerial images were 6.77% for mean height, 12.00% for mean diameter, and 22.62% for volume. A forward overlap of 60% resulted in slightly deteriorated RMSE values of 7.55% for mean height, 12.20% for mean diameter, and 22.77% for volume. According to our results, the use of higher forward overlap produced only slightly better results in the estimation of these forest variables. Additionally, we found that the estimation accuracy was not significantly impacted by the increase in the off-nadir angle. Our results confirmed that digital aerial photographs were about as accurate as ALS in forest resources estimation as long as a terrain model was available.
