[Termes IGN] Pinus (genre)Résumé : (Auteur) The main study objective was to develop robust processing and analysis techniques to facilitate the use of small-footprint lidar data for estimating plot-level tree height by measuring individual trees identifiable on the three-dimensional lidar surface. Lidar processing techniques included data fusion with multispectral optical data and local filtering with both square and circular windows of variable size. The lidar system used for this study produced an average footprint of 0.65 m and an average distance between laser shots of 0.7 m. The lidar data set was acquired over deciduous and coniferous stands with settings typical of the southeastern United States. The lidar-derived tree measurements were used with regression models and cross-validation to estimate tree height on 0.017-ha plots. For the pine plots, lidar measurements explained 97 percent of the variance associated with the mean height of dominant trees. For deciduous plots, regression models explained 79 percent of the mean height variance for dominant trees. Filtering for local maximum with circular windows gave better fitting models for pines, while for deciduous trees, filtering with square windows provided a slightly better model fit. Using lidar and optical data fusion to differentiate between forest types provided better results for estimating average plot height for pines. Estimating tree height for deciduous plots gave superior results without calibrating the search window size based on forest type. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) Laser scanners of small footprint diameter and high sampling density provide possibility to obtain accurate height information on the forest canopy. When applying tree crown segmentation methods, individual single trees can be recognised and tree height as well as crown area can be detected. Detection of suppressed trees from a height model based on laser scanning is difficult; however, it is possible to predict these trees by using theoretical distribution functions. In this study, two different methods are used to predict small trees. In the first method, the parameter prediction method is utilised with the complete Weibull distribution, the parameters of which are predicted with separate parameter prediction models; thus, small trees are determined from the predicted tree height distribution. In the second method, the twoparameter left-truncated Weibull distribution is fitted to the detected tree height distribution.
The results are presented by using timber volume and stem density as predicted stand characteristics. The results showed that the root mean square error (RMSE) for the timber volume is about 25% when using only information obtained from laser scanning, whereas the RMSE for the number of stems per ha is about 75%. Predictions for both characteristics are also highly biased and the underestimates are 24% and 62%, respectively. The use of the parameter prediction method to describe small trees improved the accuracy considerably; the RMSE figures for estimates of timber volume and number of stems are 16.0% and 49.2%, respectively. The bias for the estimates is also decreased to 6.3% for timber volume and 8.2% for the number of stems. When a left-truncated height distribution is used to predict the heights of the missing small trees, the RMSEs for the estimates of timber volume and number of stems are 22.5% and 72.7%, respectively. In the case of the timber volume, the reliability figures for both the original laser scanning-based estimates and for the estimates that also contain small trees are comparable to those obtained by conventional compartment-wise Finnish field inventories.Numéro de notice : A2004-199 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.rse.2004.01.006 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rse.2004.01.006 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=26726

[Termes IGN] télémétrie laser aéroportéRésumé : (Auteur) Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (INSAR) and laser altimeter (LIDAR) systems are both widely used for mapping topography. INSAR can map extended areas but accuracies are limited over vegetated regions, primarily because the observations are not measurements of true surface topography. The measurements correspond to a height above the true surface that depends on both the sensor and the vegetation. Conversely, topography from LIDAR is very accurate, but coverage is limited to smaller regions. We demonstrate how these technologies can be used synergistically. First, we determine surface elevations and vegetation heights from dual-baseline INSAR data by inverting an INSAR scattering model. We then combine sparse LIDAR observations with the INSAR inversion results to improve the estimates of ground elevations and vegetation heights. This is accomplished via a multiresolution Kalman Filter that provides both the estimates and a measure of their uncertainty at each location. Combining data from the two sensors provides estimates that are more accurate than those obtained from INSAR alone yet have dense, extensive coverage, which is difficult to obtain with LIDAR. Contributions of this work include 1) combining physical modeling with multiscale estimation to accommodate non-linear measurement-state relationships and 2) improving estimates of ground elevations and vegetation heights for remote sensing applications. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) The canopy surface is an undulating surface that follows the irregular contours of the upper tree crowns and defines the inner and the outer limits of the forest volume. In French Guiana, the height of the canopy surface was surveyed in both a primary and a 20-years old clear-felled secondary forest plot. The topographic surface was displayed in a three-dimensional mesh, where X and Y are horizontal co-ordinates, and Z is the canopy height measured from the ground with an optical telemeter. The statistical dispersion of Z-data, and the spatial tree height variations, are interpreted at different levels of ecosystem organisation, from forest type (primary or secondary forest) to the trees themselves, following the folded forest model theory (Oldeman 1992, 1994). The vertical growth of trees creates a convex pattern in the relief of canopy surface, whereas gaps make ‘concavities’ which delimit impact of perturbation on the forest structure. These events are either the result of the dynamic of single trees (emergent and decayed trees), or arise from the dynamic of a group of trees working together (group of emergent trees or complex gaps). At the plot scale, the elementary events, convexities and concavities, are gathered on similar topo-sequences, and form canopy units either higher or lower than the average canopy height. This study suggests that the topography of the canopy surface is defined by a complex nested system from trees, to groups of trees, to canopy units, within a delimited floristic and physical environment.
