[Termes IGN] périphérie urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Three-dimensional urban form has a considerable influence on urban sustainability, being the reason spatial planning regulate it. Yet, we know very little about the development of building density and building height over time. In this study, we characterize the horizontal and vertical patterns of urban development in Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, and Zaragoza between 1965 and 2015. Our analysis is based on a unique combination of cadastral data and LiDAR point clouds, which we use to characterize building footprint, height, and volume, at decadal intervals. Subsequently, we characterize urban expansion and densification processes using building volume and Urban Form Types. We find that height of new buildings shows a significant downward trend during the 70′s for the four urban areas and a decreasing trend after the 2008 real estate bubble for the cases of Barcelona and Valencia. Over the analyzed period a decrease of 116, 313, 217 and 157 cm in average building height was observed for Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, and Zaragoza, respectively. Urbanized volume of all cities together has expanded by roughly 350% between 1950 and 2015. Sparse built-up form showed the largest absolute increase, although it contains only a low fraction of new built-up volume. A clear trend towards expansion is observed in city outskirts and the development of new urban clusters in municipalities closer to the main city. At the same time, settlements have followed incremental steps towards densification of the city-cores over time. This study provides a first step towards comprehensive understanding of long-term changes in 3D urban form, which can inform the development of policies that target the third dimension in urban form to steer sustainable urban growth. [Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (auteur) The systematical exploration of how two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) features of urban landscapes influence land surface temperature (LST) is still limited. Therefore, we investigated the influence of three main urban landscapes—urban green space, impervious land, and water bodies on LST, with a particular focus on the 3D vegetation metrics of green volume (GV) and leaf area index (LAI). We used Yinchuan City, China, as a case study. We quantified the impacts of various 2D/3D metrics of the three landscape types on LST using a random forest analysis with multiple sources, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and remote sensing images. We then generated a Bayesian Network (BN) model to identify the optimal configurations for each landscape type. We found that using 11 of the 31 metrics considered, our model could explain 81.8% of the observed variance in LST of Yinchuan City. Among those, water body metrics were the most important, followed by vegetation abundance, impervious land metrics, and landscape pattern of urban green space. The mean classification error of the BN model was only 22.9%. We suggest that this makes the BN model a promising support tool for urban planning with a view to urban heat island mitigation. Our findings also stress the importance of considering both 2D and 3D features when considering urban cooling strategies. [Termes IGN] porteRésumé : (auteur) Street view imagery such as Google Street View is widely used in people’s daily lives. Many studies have been conducted to detect and map objects such as traffic signs and sidewalks for urban built-up environment analysis. While mapping objects in the horizontal dimension is common in those studies, automatic vertical measuring in large areas is underexploited. Vertical information from street view imagery can benefit a variety of studies. One notable application is estimating the lowest floor elevation, which is critical for building flood vulnerability assessment and insurance premium calculation. In this article, we explored the vertical measurement in street view imagery using the principle of tacheometric surveying. In the case study of lowest floor elevation estimation using Google Street View images, we trained a neural network (YOLO-v5) for door detection and used the fixed height of doors to measure doors’ elevation. The results suggest that the average error of estimated elevation is 0.218 m. The depthmaps of Google Street View were utilized to traverse the elevation from the roadway surface to target objects. The proposed pipeline provides a novel approach for automatic elevation estimation from street view imagery and is expected to benefit future terrain-related studies for large areas. [Vedettes matières IGN] Traitement de données GNSSRésumé : (auteur) Pedestrian and vehicular navigation relies mainly on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Even if different navigation systems are integrated, GNSS positioning remains the core of any navigation process as it is the only system capable of providing independent solutions. However, in harsh environments, especially urban ones, GNSS signals are confronted by many obstructions causing the satellite signals to reach the receivers through reflected paths. These No-Line of Sight (NLOS) signals can affect the positioning accuracy significantly. This contribution proposes a new algorithm to detect and exclude these NLOS signals using 3D building models constructed from Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI). OpenStreetMap (OSM) and Google Earth (GE) data are combined to build the 3D models incorporated with GNSS signals in the algorithm. Real field data are used for testing and validation of the presented algorithm and strategy. The accuracy improvement, after exclusion of the NLOS signals, is evaluated employing phase-smoothed code observations. The results show that applying the proposed algorithm can improve the horizontal positioning accuracy remarkably. This improvement reaches 10.72 m, and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) drops by 1.64 m (46 % improvement) throughout the epochs with detected NLOS satellites. In addition, the improvement is analyzed in the Along-Track (AT) and Cross-Track (CT) directions. It reaches 6.89 m in the AT direction with a drop of 1.076 m in the RMSE value, while it reaches 8.64 m with a drop of 1.239 m in the RMSE value in the CT direction. [Termes IGN] ville intelligenteRésumé : (auteur) Understanding urban morphology is essential for various urban management studies and local environmental issues and guiding sustainable city development. Existing studies mainly focus on analyzing urban morphology from the horizontal aspect, while the urban vertical structure has rarely been discussed due to the scarcity of reliable and fine-scale urban three-dimensional (3-D) building data. This study develops an effective data-fusing methodology to estimate the heights of individual buildings at a city scale. We examined a machine-learning regression model by collecting public materials, including multi-source remote sensing-(RS)-based products, building-derived features, and relevant data to verify its performance in building height estimation. By applying the model in Shenzhen City, a dense city in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, results demonstrated that integrating rich multi-source explanatory variables could achieve high-accuracy building height retrieval. Using multiple building morphological metrics derived by building height data as proxy measures, the urban 3-D form patterns were further analyzed to understand current heterogeneous urban morphological structures. The proposed methodology can be conveniently applied to worldwide cities for urban 3-D morphology retrieval. Also, the available building height information is useful for planners to design morphological control for cities and thus contributes to sustainable and smart city development.
