[Termes IGN] signal laserRésumé : (Auteur) Imputations of missing values and optimal smoothing with massive data arrays poses a computational challenge since ordinary kriging becomes infeasible. Imputation and smoothing with standard algorithms like inverse distance weighted nearest neighbour interpolation (IDW) and interpolation on triangulated irregular networks (TIN/IP) fail to incorporate the spatial structure and ignore information beyond the neighbourhood. Multiresolution spatial models (MRSM) or approximate kriging methods adapted to handling massive data sets can be expected to do better than IDW and TIN/IP in terms of mean square errors of prediction (MSEP). We illustrate a MRSM that is efficient, computationally fast, and easy to implement. In two forestry examples with imputation of LiDAR range values the MRSM achieved a lower MSEP than IDW, TIN/IP, and fixed ranked kriging. MRSM appear as especially attractive for the construction of a DTM from last return LiDAR pulses. A third example demonstrates MRSM for efficient smoothing. [Termes IGN] Web Map ServiceRésumé : (Auteur) A web-based distributed system for monitoring and forecasting of the marine environment has been developed in line with INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe (INSPIRE) and Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) recommendations for a European Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI). This system, called DISPRO, enables integration and distribution of multi-source data from satellites, aircraft, and in situ instruments, as well as results from numerical models. Geographic data and metadata are stored on a set of distributed computer nodes and retrieved and integrated by a web GIS client by means of Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Map Server (WMS) technologies. A profile of ISO 19115 was developed for metadata handling, using eXtensible Markup Language (XML) as a platform independent encoding mechanism. DISPRO has been demonstrated in six European coastal zone and ocean regions in the spring and summer of 2005. The overall positive experiences of both service providers and end users indicate that the system should be further developed into an operational GMES service. [Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Unsupervised classification methodology applied to remote sensing image processing can provide benefits in automatically converting the raw image data into useful information so long as higher classification accuracy is achieved. The traditional k-means clustering scheme using spectral data alone does not perform well in general as far as accuracy is concerned. This is partly due to the failure to take the spatial inter-pixels dependencies (i.e. the context) into account, resulting in a 'busy' visual appearance to the output imagery. To address this, the hidden Markov models (HMM) are introduced in this study as a fundamental framework to incorporate both the spectral and contextual information in analysis. This helps generate more patch-like output imagery and produces higher classification accuracy in an unsupervised scheme. The newly developed unsupervised classification approach is based on observation-sequence and observation-density adjustments, which have been proposed for incorporating 2D spatial information into the linear HMM. For the observation-sequence adjustment methods, there are a total of five neighbourhood systems being proposed. Two neighbourhood systems were incorporated into the observation-density methods for study. The classification accuracy is then evaluated by means of confusion matrices made by randomly chosen test samples. The classification obtained by k-means clustering and the HMM with commonly seen strip-like and Hilbert-Peano sequence fitting methods were also measured. Experimental results showed that the proposed approaches for combining both the spectral and spatial information into HMM unsupervised classification mechanism present improvements in both classification accuracy and visual qualities. [Termes IGN] vision par ordinateurRésumé : (Auteur) Image registration is concerned with the problem of how to combine data and/to information from multiple sensors in order to achieve improved accuracies and better inference about the environment than could be attained through the use of a single sensor. Registration of imagery and/or information from multiple sources is essential for a variety of applications in remote sensing, medical diagnosis, computer vision, and pattern recognition.
