[Termes IGN] traitement d'imageRésumé : (auteur) Accurate land cover information is required for science, monitoring, and reporting. Land cover changes naturally over time, as well as a result of anthropogenic activities. Monitoring and mapping of land cover and land cover change in a consistent and robust manner over large areas is made possible with Earth Observation (EO) data. Land cover products satisfying a range of science and policy information needs are currently produced periodically at different spatial and temporal scales. The increased availability of EO data—particularly from the Landsat archive (and soon to be augmented with Sentinel-2 data)—coupled with improved computing and storage capacity with novel image compositing approaches, have resulted in the availability of annual, large-area, gap-free, surface reflectance data products. In turn, these data products support the development of annual land cover products that can be both informed and constrained by change detection outputs. The inclusion of time series change in the land cover mapping process provides information on class stability and informs on logical class transitions (both temporally and categorically). In this review, we present the issues and opportunities associated with generating and validating time-series informed annual, large-area, land cover products, and identify methods suited to incorporating time series information and other novel inputs for land cover characterization. [Termes IGN] test de performanceRésumé : (auteur) In the frame of the Copernicus program of the European Commission, Sentinel-2 offers multispectral high-spatial-resolution optical images over global terrestrial surfaces. In cooperation with ESA, the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) is in charge of the image quality of the project, and so ensures the CAL/VAL commissioning phase during the months following the launch. Sentinel-2 is a constellation of 2 satellites on a polar sun-synchronous orbit with a revisit time of 5 days (with both satellites), a high field of view - 290km, 13 spectral bands in visible and shortwave infrared, and high spatial resolution - 10m, 20m and 60m. The Sentinel-2 mission offers a global coverage over terrestrial surfaces. The satellites acquire systematically terrestrial surfaces under the same viewing conditions in order to have temporal images stacks. The first satellite was launched in June 2015. Following the launch, the CAL/VAL commissioning phase is then lasting during 6 months for geometrical calibration. This paper will point on observations and results seen on Sentinel-2 images during commissioning phase. It will provide explanations about Sentinel-2 products delivered with geometric corrections. This paper will detail calibration sites, and the methods used for geometrical parameters calibration and will present linked results. The following topics will be presented: viewing frames orientation assessment, focal plane mapping for all spectral bands, results on geolocation assessment, and multispectral registration. There is a systematic images recalibration over a same reference which is a set of S2 images produced during the 6 months of CAL/VAL. This set of images will be presented as well as the geolocation performance and the multitemporal performance after refining over this ground reference. [Termes IGN] SurinameRésumé : (auteur) Included in the larger Guiana Shield ecosystem, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá possess one of the largest continuous tracts of pristine forest in the world. Under little threat until fifteen years ago, deforestation and forest degradation are of increasing concern in the region. Gold mining activities driven by the sustained increase of gold price has experienced a significant boom and represents nowadays one of the main driver. The pollution of rivers and streams by mercury used in small-scale gold mining is also expanding, which increases risks to local population health and freshwater biodiversity. In 2010, the French National Forest Office (ONF) showed by using optical satellite images at medium and high resolution (HR) that gold mining activities’ impacts on forest cover and freshwater increased approximately by a factor three in the region between 2001 and 2008. More recently, Alvarez-Berríos et al. (2015) pointed out a sustained acceleration of deforestation caused by gold mining in the Guiana shield between 2007 and 2013. However, this study which was performed using low resolution data at the scale of South America has limited capacity to detect gold mining, especially in the high forest cover of Guiana Shield where small- and medium-scale operations account for most of the deforestation. To overcome this limitation, the REDD+ for the Guiana Shield project conducted a study co-funded by WWF Guianas to update for 2014 the ONF 2001-2008 results, using optical multi-sensors data at medium and high resolution. The study was carried out following a unique collaborative and participatory approach involving a team of experts from the forestry and environmental services of each territory, namely SEMA (Amapá-Brazil), ONF (French Guiana-France), GFC (Guyana), and SBB (Suriname). The results confirmed the rapid expansion of the activity in the region where more than 92,000 ha were newly deforested between 2008 and 2014, compared to approximately 46,000 ha during the period 2001-2008. In 2014, more than 9,000 km of waterways were in direct contact with mining sites, which is approximately 6.5 times more than in 2001. Although a reliable, accurate and robust regional methodology has been developed and operationally implemented, the frequent and widespread cloud cover of the Guianan moist forest region represents a challenge for the use of optical HR data. The need to process time series of satellite images in most areas to reduce cloud cover is time-consuming. Despite processing more than two hundreds images, 3.6% of the study area remained masked by clouds. The recent free access to SAR HR Sentinel-1 data offers great opportunities to improve the process. SAR sensors can peer through clouds and their sensitivity to soil moisture can help to better detect small-scale mining sites. Therefore, the REDD+ for the Guiana Shield project has started to build capacities in the region on SAR image interpretation and processing using the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP). A first mosaic of Sentinel-1 data covering Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá has been created and automated pre-processing steps have been developed. The integration of Sentinel-1 data in the regional gold mining monitoring system has been successfully tested in four study sites, one in each country. The coming free access to optical HR Sentinel-2 data opens even more perspectives towards the development of cost-effective monitoring systems in the region, especially valuable in the context of REDD+. This paper first presents the results of the impact of gold mining activities on the forest cover and freshwater for 2014 and shows the evolution since 2001. Secondly, it provides the first outcomes towards the development of time- and cost-efficient forest monitoring systems in the region. [Termes IGN] télédétection aérospatialeRésumé : (auteur)The major constraint in understanding grass above ground biomass variations using remotely sensed data are the expenses associated with the data, as well as the limited number of techniques that can be applied to different management practices with minimal errors. New generation multispectral sensors such as Sentinel 2 Multispectral Imager (MSI) are promising for effective rangeland management due to their unique spectral bands and higher signal to noise ratio. This study resampled hyperspectral data to spectral resolutions of the newly launched Sentinel 2 MSI and the recently launched Landsat 8 OLI for comparison purposes. Using Sparse partial least squares regression, the resampled data was applied in estimating above ground biomass of grasses treated with different fertilizer combinations of ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, phosphorus and lime as well as unfertilized experimental plots. Sentinel 2 MSI derived models satisfactorily performed (R2 = 0.81, RMSEP = 1.07 kg/m2, RMSEP_rel = 14.97) in estimating grass above ground biomass across different fertilizer treatments relative to Landsat 8 OLI (Landsat 8 OLI: R2 = 0.76, RMSEP = 1.15 kg/m2, RMSEP_rel = 16.04). In comparison, hyperspectral data derived models exhibited better grass above ground biomass estimation across complex fertilizer combinations (R2 = 0.92, RMSEP = 0.69 kg/m2, RMSEP_rel = 9.61). Although Sentinel 2 MSI bands and indices better predicted above ground biomass compared with Landsat 8 OLI bands and indices, there were no significant differences (α = 0.05) in the errors of prediction between the two new generational sensors across all fertilizer treatments. The findings of this study portrays Sentinel 2 MSI and Landsat 8 OLI as promising remotely sensed datasets for regional scale biomass estimation, particularly in resource scarce areas.
