[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Changes in land can involve pressing and complex problems that urban areas need to resolve. Construction of a land use or land cover mechanism is an essential way of dealing with those problems. Based upon the difficulties that occur in investigations of land use, this study will focus on the development of a spatial knowledge database. The major function of a spatial knowledge database is to integrate spectral, GIS, aerial photos, and DEM information. In this study data from a series of periods for SPOT-HRV XS images (1993, 1996, 1998) were collected. A decision-tree concept was built into the image-classification database to resolve the uncertainty of images in urban areas. The aim of this study is to provide an objective solution for efficiently classifying images in urban areas. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Developing reliable methods for representing and managing information uncertainty remains it persistent and relevant challenge to GIScience. Information uncertainty is an intricate idea, and recent examinations of this concept have generated many perspectives on its representation and visualization, with perspectives emerging from a wide range of disciplines and application contexts. In this paper, we review and assess progress toward visual tools and methods to help analysis manage and understand information uncertainty. Specifically, we report on efforts to conceptualize uncertainty, decision making with uncertainty, frameworks for representing uncertainty, visual representation and user control of displays of information uncertainty, and evaluative efforts to assess the use and usability of visual displays of uncertainty. We conclude by identifying seven key research challenges in visualizing information uncertainty, particularly as it applies to decision making and analysis. [Termes IGN] repère de référenceRésumé : (Auteur) Over the past years, satellite altimetry has produced several significant improvements in our scientific understanding of the oceans. However, several results related to global or regional sea level changes still too often rely on the assumption that orbit errors coming from station coordinates adoption can be neglected in the total error budget. The goal of this paper is to specifically study this general assumption and to assess its limitation. In a first step, in the case of the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite, we first characterized orbital errors coming from the adoption of a specific Terrestrial Reference Frame using a MonteCarlobased simulation method using DORIS data. In a second step, we analysed the effect of these systematic orbital errors on the mean sea level derived from altimeter data. From these results, we derived linear transfer functions that can be used for several purposes like error budget estimation in altimetry or local tic specifications for the implementation of new tracking stations. These simulations show that the main source of errors comes from current imprecision in the Zaxis realization of the frame. A 10 mm error in the TZ realization can create a 1.2 mm of systematic errors in the derived mean sea level due to the NorthSouth asymmetric distribution of the oceans A over the world. Significant sea level rise could erroneously be attributed to a possible warming of the biosphere while they just come from systematic errors in the Terrestrial Reference Frame used to generate the satellite operational orbits. Finally, we assessed the accuracy of present Terrestrial Reference Frame realizations and derived a realistic error budget for this specific source of error. For the ITRF97 realization, a current precision of 3.0 mm in sea level and 0.37 mm/yr in sea level rise was obtained. These precisions should gradually improve with future Terrestrial Reference Frame realizations. [Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we identify two distinct notions of accuracy of land-use models and highlight a tension between them. A model can have predictive accuracy: its predicted land-use pattern can be highly correlated with the actual land-use pattern. A model can also have process accuracy : the process by which locations or land-use patterns are determined can be consistent with real world processes. To balance these two potentially conflicting motivations, we introduce the concept of the invariant region, i.e., the area where land-use type is almost certain, and thus path independent; and the variant region, i.e., the area where land use depends on a particular series of events, and is thus path dependent. We demonstrate our methods using an agent-based land-use model and using multitemporal land-use data collected for Washtenaw County, Michigan, USA. The results indicate that, using the methods we describe, researchers can improve their ability to communicate how well their model performs, the situations or instances in which it does not perform well, and the cases in which it is relatively unlikely to predict well because of either path dependence or stochastic uncertainty. [Termes IGN] zone inondableRésumé : (Auteur) Improved techniques are needed to characterize complex fluvial systems and monitor ecologically important, yet highly vulnerable riverine environments. This paper explores potential alternatives to traditional mapping of in-stream habitat and presents fuzzy set theory as a means of departing from the rigid, Boolean, object-based framework. We utilize hydrodynamic modeling, remotely sensed data, and fuzzy clustering to obtain classifications that allow for continuous partial membership and gradual transitions among habitat types. Methods of assessing cluster validity are available, but data quality is a crucial consideration. Crisp, vector-based representations can be derived from raster fuzzy classifications by applying a threshold to maximum membership values. This process results in conditional objects separated by ambiguous transition zones, and a compromise must be reached between the proportion of the channel assigned to polygons and the certainty with which this assignment can be made. Spatial patterns of classification uncertainty can also be used to identify areas of confusion, infer boundaries of variable width, and highlight areas of increased habitat diversity. Hydraulic modeling and remote sensing complement one another and, together with field work, could provide a more realistic representation of the fluvial environment.
