[Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In a geographical information system (GIS), a conventional point-in-polygon analysis is used to determine whether a point is located inside a polygon with a Boolean result. Due to positional uncertainties existing with both the point and the polygon, the Boolean answer cannot describe the relationship of closeness between the point and the polygon. This paper aims to develop a model and to provide a continuous index - the probability value - to indicate the extent of the uncertain point located inside the uncertain polygon based upon existing research development. This probability index is derived based on probability and statistical theories considering the statistical uncertainty distributions of the point and the polygon's vertices. The associated mathematical expressions for the probability index are addressed in cases depending on the intersection between the polygon and the error ellipse of the point. The proposed probability index can provide an objective description of the relationship of closeness between an uncertain point and an uncertain polygon. [Termes IGN] précision infrapixellaireRésumé : (Auteur) Land cover class composition of remotely sensed image pixels can be estimated using soft classification techniques increasingly available in many GIS packages. However, their output provides no indication of how such classes are distributed spatially within the instantaneous field of view represented by the pixel. Techniques that attempt to provide an improved spatial representation of land cover have been developed, but not tested on the difficult task of mapping from real satellite imagery. The authors investigated the use of a Hopfield neural network technique to map the spatial distributions of classes reliably using information of pixel composition determined from soft classification previously. The approach involved designing the energy function to produce a 'best guess' prediction of the spatial distribution of class components in each pixel. In previous studies, the authors described the application of the technique to target identification, pattern prediction and land cover mapping at the subpixel scale, but only for simulated imagery. We now show how the approach can be applied to Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) agriculture imagery to derive accurate estimates of land cover and reduce the uncertainty inherent in such imagery. The technique was applied to Landsat TM imagery of smallscale agriculture in Greece and largescale agriculture near Leicester, UK. The resultant maps provided an accurate and improved representation of the land covers studied, with RMS errors for the Landsat imagery of the order of 0.1 in the new fine resolution map recorded. The results showed that the neural network represents a simple efficient tool for mapping land cover from operational satellite sensor imagery and can deliver requisite results and improvements over traditional techniques for the GIS analysis of pratical remotly sensed imagery at the sub pixel scale. This supports the visual analysis of point patterns, which is usually followed by more sophisticated statistical and mathematical analysis. If the location of points is uncertain, however, the surface obtained becomes unstable and consequently the results of analysis may be unreliable. Though unavoidable in spatial data, locational uncertainty has been rather neglected in the context of spatial analysis. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a method for representing and analysing the stability of the surface generated from an uncertain point distribution. The surface stability is represented by a scalar function called the slope stability function. Its definition, calculation procedure, visualization method, and summary indices are proposed. The method is evaluated through an empirical study, and some findings are shown which help us understand the effect of the smoothing parameter, locational uncertainty, and spatial pattern of points on the stability of a surface. In this paper, we present a more general and exact formulation giving a new relationship between the interferogram phase and the target height. It is based on the interferometric SAR geometry and on a better expansion of the path length difference between the sensor and the target. This formulation emphasizes the impact of baseline uncertainties on digital elevation model (DEM) accuracy. A quantitative assessment of the required baseline accuracy is computed. The impact of orbital parameters, used in the new formulation, on interferogram generation is studied. Thus, a new simulator algorithm is developed and tested on a set of reference and simulated DEM examples. Examples of interferogram simulation and DEM generation validate this new approach in the case of a mountainous area in Mustang (Nepal).
