[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (Auteur) In forestry, the variable of interest is not always directly available from forest inventories. Consequently, practitioners have to rely on models to obtain predictions of this variable of interest. This context leads to hybrid inference, which is based on both the probability design and the model. Unfortunately, the current analytical hybrid estimators for the variance of the point estimator are mainly based on linear or nonlinear models and their use is limited when the model reaches a high level of complexity. An alternative consists of using a variance estimator based on resampling methods (Rubin, D. B. (1987). Multiple imputation for nonresponse surveys. John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken, New Jersey, USA). However, it turns out that a parametric bootstrap (BS) estimator of the variance can be biased in contexts of hybrid inference. In this study, we designed and tested a corrected BS estimator for the variance of the point estimator, which can easily be implemented as long as all of the stochastic components of the model can be properly simulated. Like previous estimators, this corrected variance estimator also makes it possible to distinguish the contribution of the sampling and the model to the variance of the point estimator. The results of three simulation studies of increasing complexity showed no evidence of bias for this corrected variance estimator, which clearly outperformed the BS variance estimator used in previous studies. Since the implementation of this corrected variance estimator is not much more complicated, we recommend its use in contexts of hybrid inference based on complex models. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Key message: Trees outside forests (TOF) have crucial ecological and social-economic roles in rural and urban contexts around the world. We demonstrate that a large-scale estimation strategy, based on a two-phase inventory approach, effectively supports the assessment of TOF’s diversity and related climate change mitigation potential.
Context: Although trees outside forest (TOF) affect the ecological quality and contribute to increase the social and economic developments at various scales, lack of data and difficulties to harmonize the known information currently limit their integration into national and global forest inventories.
Aims: This study aims to develop and test a large-scale estimation framework to assess ecological diversity and above-ground carbon stock of TOF.
Methods: This study adopts a two-phase inventory approach.
Results: In the surveyed territory (Molise region, Central Italy), all the attributes considered (tree abundance, basal area, wood volume, above-ground carbon stock) are concentrated in a few dominant species. Furthermore, carbon stock in TOF above-ground biomass is non-negligible (on average: 28.6 t ha−1). Compared with the low field sampling effort (0.08% out of 52,796 TOF elements), resulting uncertainty of the estimators are more than satisfactory, especially those regarding the diversity index estimators (relative standard errors Conclusion: The proposed approach can be suitably applied on vast territories to support landscape planning and maximize ecosystem services balance from TOF.Numéro de notice : A2018-326 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : BIODIVERSITE/FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-018-0718-6 Date de publication en ligne : 16/03/2018 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-018-0718-6 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=90469

[Termes IGN] scène urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Incorporating Human Visual System (HVS) models into building of classifiers has become an intensively researched field in visual content mining. In the variety of models of HVS we are interested in so-called visual saliency maps. Contrarily to scan-paths they model instantaneous attention assigning the degree of interestingness/saliency for humans to each pixel in the image plane. In various tasks of visual content understanding, these maps proved to be efficient stressing contribution of the areas of interest in image plane to classifiers models. In previous works saliency layers have been introduced in Deep CNNs, showing that they allow reducing training time getting similar accuracy and loss values in optimal models. In case of large image collections efficient building of saliency maps is based on predictive models of visual attention. They are generally bottom-up and are not adapted to specific visual tasks. Unless they are built for specific content, such as "urban images"-targeted saliency maps we also compare in this paper. In present research we propose a "bootstrap" strategy of building visual saliency maps for particular tasks of visual data mining. A small collection of images relevant to the visual understanding problem is annotated with gaze fixations. Then the propagation to a large training dataset is ensured and compared with the classical GBVS model and a recent method of saliency for urban image content. The classification results within Deep CNN framework are promising compared to the purely automatic visual saliency prediction.
