[Termes IGN] séismeRésumé : (Auteur) This study uses high-resolution (HR) satellite imagery to quantify the stock of buildings, referred herein as building stock. The risk assessment requires information on the natural hazards and on the element at risk, that is the building stock in this article. This study combines (1) texture-based image processing to map built-up areas, (2) statistical sampling that allows locating the building samples and (3) photo-interpretation to encoding building footprints. Statistical inference is then used to quantify the building stock per class of building size. Legaspi in the Philippines is used as a case study. The results show that texture-based computer algorithms provide accurate area estimations of the built-up, that the detail of HR imagery allows the mapping of single buildings using photo-interpretation, and that a systematic sampling approach that uses building encoding and built-up maps can be used to quantify the building stock. [Termes IGN] vecteur propreRésumé : (Auteur) Negative spatial autocorrelation refers to a geographic distribution of values, or a map pattern, in which the neighbors of locations with large values have small values, the neighbors of locations with intermediate values have intermediate values, and the neighbors of locations with small values have large values. Little is known about negative spatial autocorrelation and its consequences in statistical inference in general, and regression-based inference in particular, with spatial researchers to date concentrating mostly on understanding the much more frequently encountered case of positive spatial autocorrelation. What are the spatial contexts within which negative spatial autocorrelation should be readily found? What are its inferential consequences for regression models? This paper presents selected empirical examples of negative spatial autocorrelation, adding to the slowly growing literature about this phenomenon. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Boundary line release criteria are increasingly applied to evaluate forest disturbance histories from tree-ring data. However, a number of important properties central to the technique have not been evaluated, including: (i) the ability of boundary line release criteria to standardize releases across various sites, species, and tree life stages (ii) the minimum sample sizes necessary for developing boundary lines, and (iii) the degree to which the criteria can resolve the degree of crown exposure following a disturbance event. In an analysis of eleven North American tree species, boundary line release criteria do not fully compensate for declines in release response a tree experiences with increasing age and size, with the exception Tsuga canadensis. A bootstrapping analysis indicates that approximately 50 000 ring width measurements are necessary to develop boundary line release criteria for a given species. In a Quercus prinus stand, boundary line release criteria better predict the degree of crown exposure following a disturbance than an earlier running mean technique. Despite certain limitations, boundary line release criteria have the potential to standardize release calculation across most life stages of a tree, and possibly among sites and species. The authors, who are experts in the various domains, succeed in providing highly readable surveys of the rich flow of literature that started in the late 1970s, and in giving introductions that are primarily aimed at newcomers but also interesting for experienced researchers. The many applications that are spread through the chapters give the reader a good idea of how to carry out performance assessment in practice. This book has a lot to offer a variety of readers."--Bert M. Balk, Statistics Netherlands and RSM Erasmus University
"Efficiency and productivity involve the 'best' use of scarce resources, which is the foundation of economic performance. The top specialists who have contributed to this volume unravel a fundamental but unresolved issue of economic performance--that extensive real-world variability in firms' economic performance belies the homogeneity implied by economic theory. They evaluate the pieces of the puzzle--inefficiencies involving technical, cost and revenue optimization--that cause firms to deviate from best-practice operation, and explain how such deviations can be measured and explained to further business performance and competitiveness. This is an excellent and comprehensive reference for any researcher interested in the analysis of economic performance, and the recent advances made and challenges still ahead in this field."--Catherine J. [Termes IGN] méthode du maximum de vraisemblance (estimation)Résumé : (Auteur) Nous traitons d'un champ spatial autorégressif simultané d'ordre 1 (modèle de Whittle) composé de variables en interaction selon une géométrie de réseau carré.
