[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (auteur) OpenStreetMap (OSM) produces a huge amount of labeled spatial data, but its quality has always been a deep concern. Numerous quality issues have been discussed in the vast literature, while the fitness of OSM for road navigability is only partly explored. Navigability depends on logical consistency, which focuses on the existence of logical contradictions within a data set. Researchers have discussed the insufficiency of established methods and the lack of a computational paradigm to assess the quality of the OSM data. To address the research gaps, the current work extended the capabilities of the Quantum GIS Processing Toolbox for assessment of spatial data. The models and scripts developed are able to assess logical consistency based on geographical topological consistency, semantic information, and morphological consistency. The established and proxy indicators are selected for measuring the logical consistency of OSM data for navigability. For empirical validation, OSM Punjab data are compared with authoritative data from HERE (proprietary) and the Remote Sensing Centre (RSC), Punjab, India. The results conclude that even the proprietary road data sets are not free from logical inconsistencies and data contributed by the masses are credible and navigable. OSM has produced better results than the RSC, but needs more crowd contributions to improve its quality. [Termes IGN] web mappingRésumé : (Auteur) Near-ubiquitous Internet access with widely available user-friendly Web tools and software packages for map creation have allowed an increasing number of digitally savvy map makers, including prosumers, to communicate with other people using mashup maps for some years. This article presents an empirical study that looks at the question of how prosumers and cartographers use the graphical variables developed by Jacques Bertin in 1967 for cartographic communication. The findings suggest that both prosumers and trained cartographers mainly use the graphical variables colour hue and shape. Trained cartographers additionally use the graphical variables size and colour value to represent ordinal, nominal, and numerical data. The persistence of this difference speaks to the continued importance of cartographic training for effective cartographic communication. With the trajectory semantic enrichment, emerged the need for similarity measures that support space, time, and semantics. Although some trajectory similarity measures deal with all these dimensions, they consider only stops, ignoring the moves. We claim that, for some applications, the movement between stops is as important as the stops, and they must be considered in the similarity analysis. In this article, we propose SMSM, a novel similarity measure for semantic trajectories that considers both stops and moves. We evaluate SMSM with three trajectory datasets: (i) a synthetic trajectory dataset generated with the Hermoupolis semantic trajectory generator, (ii) a real trajectory dataset from the CRAWDAD project, and (iii) the Geolife dataset. The results show that SMSM overcomes state-of-the-art measures developed either for raw or semantic trajectories. Such place names may not be recorded in existing gazetteers, due to their vernacular nature, relative insignificance to a gazetteer covering a large area (e.g. the entire world), recent establishment (e.g. the name of a newly-opened shopping center) or other reasons. While not always recorded, local place names play important roles in many applications, from supporting public participation in urban planning to locating victims in disaster response. In this paper, we propose a computational framework for harvesting local place names from geotagged housing advertisements. We make use of those advertisements posted on local-oriented websites, such as Craigslist, where local place names are often mentioned. The proposed framework consists of two stages: natural language processing (NLP) and geospatial clustering. The NLP stage examines the textual content of housing advertisements and extracts place name candidates. The geospatial stage focuses on the coordinates associated with the extracted place name candidates and performs multiscale geospatial clustering to filter out the non-place names. We evaluate our framework by comparing its performance with those of six baselines. We also compare our result with four existing gazetteers to demonstrate the not-yet-recorded local place names discovered by our framework. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Commercial aerial laser scanning is generally delivered with point-by-point metadata for object identification, but current vendor-generated classification approaches (which rely exclusively on that data) generate high misclassification rates in urban areas. To overcome this problem and provide a fully scalable solution that harnesses distributed computing capabilities, this paper introduces a novel system, employing a MapReduce framework and existing GIS-based data, to provide more detailed and accurate classification. The approach goes beyond traditional gross-level classification (roads, buildings, trees, noise) by enriching the point cloud metadata with detailed semantic information about the object type. The approach was evaluated using two datasets of differing point density, separated by eight years for the same study area in Dublin, Ireland. As evaluated against manually classified data, classification quality ranged from 76% to 91% depending upon category and only 8% remained unclassified, as opposed to the commercial vendor's classification quality which ranged from 43% to 78% with 82% left unclassified.
