The present paper introduces a method to formalize and integrate different geographic categorizations. The method is based on the mathematical theory of Concept Lattices. These rich structures are used for managing multidimensional geographic categories and their overlapping relationships. The applicability of the method is tested on the problem of integrating different land cover/land use categorizations. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The geographical information systems (GIS) community has over the years captured and generated large amounts of geographical data. Discovery of these heterogeneous data sets is our main concern. Research described in this paper is focussed on one component of a Georesource Centre, an infrastructure facilitating the sharing of geographical data and processes among organisations. The role of this component, the Selector Broker, is to process metadata queries in the search for appropriate data sets. Processing of queries within the Selector Broker involves translation of the metadata semantics and query syntax. There are several ways such a translation can be done and we have adopted the direct translation of semantics and syntax in this paper. In direct translation, semantic and syntactic differences are mapped directly between systems without going through an intermediate system. In the design of the Centre, organisations use the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) to store entries of geographical data sets they have collected. The Selector Broker processes these entries using pre-defined semantic and syntactic mappings to translate the initial queries. The service provided by the Selector Broker is accessed through the Common Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (Auteur) Aggregation for spatial objects plays an important role in database or model generalization in GI since reducing spatial complexity is one of the major aims of model generalization. The aggregation operation can be considered as a geometrical operation under the control of semantic and spatial relation of objects. The process of spatial object aggregation is the process of spatial, semantic analyzing, decision-making and the implementation of operation. This process needs not only the geometric and thematic attributes of the objects, but also the spatial and semantic relationship among the objects. It also needs the supporting data structure and analyzing tools in order to make analyzing, decision-making and computation easy in aggregation process. There is still lack of studies on how data structure supports aggregation process and also lack of the method for semantic analysis in aggregation process. This paper is to focus methods and process of spatial aggregation based on semantic and geometric characteristics of spatial objects and relations among the object with the help of spatial data structure (Formal Data Structure), local constrained Delaunay triangulations and semantic hierarchy. The adjacent relation among connected objects an unconnected objects has been studied through constrained triangle as elementary processing unit aggregation operation. The hierarchical semantic analytical matrix is given for analyzing the similarity between object types and between objects (including different levels). It will govern and guide aggregation process. The several different cases of aggregation have been presented in this paper.
