[Termes IGN] zone d'activité économiqueRésumé : (auteur) The popularity of ride-hailing platforms has significantly improved travel efficiency by providing convenient and personalized transportation services. Designing an effective ride-hailing service generally needs to address two tasks: order matching that assigns orders to available vehicles and proactive vehicle repositioning that deploys idle vehicles to potentially high-demand regions. Recent studies have intensively utilized deep reinforcement learning to solve the two tasks by learning an optimal dispatching strategy. However, most of them generate actions for the two tasks independently, neglecting the interactions between the two tasks and the communications among multiple drivers. To this end, this paper provides an approach based on multi-agent deep reinforcement learning where the two tasks are modeled as a unified Markov decision process, and the colossal state space and competition among drivers are addressed. Additionally, a modifiable agent-specific state representation is proposed to facilitate knowledge transferring and improve computing efficiency. We evaluate our approach on a public taxi order dataset collected in Chengdu, China, where a variable number of simulated vehicles are tested. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms seven existing baselines, reducing passenger rejection rate, driver idle time and improving total driver income. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) This paper argues for a “human-centered” approach to knowledge discovery from movement data through the use of visualization and mapping. As movement data becomes more available and diverse in dimension and resolution, mapping becomes particularly important in the exploratory analysis of movement trajectories and for capturing patterns and structures in large origin-destination flow data sets. Movement phenomena (e.g. ranging from micro-movements of humans and animals to macro-level mobility, to migration flows, to spread of viruses) are complex dynamic processes which are realized in a multidimensional location-time-context space. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of various visualization techniques for mapping movement through the lens of cartography and with a special focus on the “human user” (e.g. data scientist, analyst, domain expert, etc.). We systematically characterize and categorize available techniques based on their visual specifications and functional capacities for human control, map-interaction, and design flexibility. These elements are beneficial to enhance the user’s capacities for map reasoning and knowledge discovery. Trends and gaps in the literature on movement visualization over the past 10 years are discussed. Our review suggests that future research should focus more on the role of the “human” in the development of human-centered visual analytic and exploratory tools, while providing functionalities for mapping uncertainty and protecting individual privacy in knowledge discovery of movement. These tools should be guided by a cartographic framework and visual principles specifically pertinent to movement. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A long-standing question in GIScience is whether geographic information systems (GIS) facilitates an adequate quantifiable representation of the concept of place. Considering the difficulties of quantifying elusive concepts related to place, several researchers focus on more tangible dimensions of the human understanding of place. The most common approaches are semantic enrichment of spatial information and holistic conceptualization of the notion of place. However, these approaches give emphasis on either space or human meaning, or they mainly exist as concepts without practically proven usable artifacts. A partial answer to this problem was proposed by the function-based model that treats place as functional space. This paper focuses primarily on the level of composition, describing and formalizing it as a rule-based framework with the following objectives: (a) contribute to the formalization efforts of the notion of place and its integration within GIS and (b) maintain tangible properties intertwined with the human understanding of place. The operationalization potential of the proposed framework is illustrated with an example of identifying the shopping areas in an urban region. The results show that the proposed model is able to capture all shopping malls as well as other areas that are not explicitly labeled as such but still function similarly to a shopping mall. While spatial analysis enjoys a multitude of quantitative methods, the study of place remains mostly conceptual and descriptive. This paper expands upon the rich concepts of place in the literature to propose a quantitative framework for placial analysis based on events. Central to the proposed framework are three assumptions: (1) human experiences transform space to place; (2) events build human experiences in space; and (3) places emerge organically and may change characters, spatial extent and location over time through the shifts in occurrences and types of events in space and time. The proposed framework consists of three elements: clustering events, decomposing event distributions, and identifying the similarity of event clusters. We applied the framework to identify criminological places in the City of Dallas in the United States and the changes of these places from 1 June 2014 to 30 May 2018. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) Existing urban boundaries are usually defined by government agencies for administrative, economic, and political purposes. However, it is not clear whether the boundaries truly reflect human interactions with urban space in intra- and interregional activities. Defining urban boundaries that consider socioeconomic relationships and citizen commute patterns is important for many aspects of urban and regional planning. In this paper, we describe a method to delineate urban boundaries based upon human interactions with physical space inferred from social media. Specifically, we depicted the urban boundaries of Great Britain using a mobility network of Twitter user spatial interactions, which was inferred from over 69 million geo-located tweets. We define the non-administrative anthropographic boundaries in a hierarchical fashion based on different physical movement ranges of users derived from the collective mobility patterns of Twitter users in Great Britain. The results of strongly connected urban regions in the form of communities in the network space yield geographically cohesive, nonoverlapping urban areas, which provide a clear delineation of the non-administrative anthropographic urban boundaries of Great Britain. The method was applied to both national (Great Britain) and municipal scales (the London metropolis). While our results corresponded well with the administrative boundaries, many unexpected and interesting boundaries were identified. Importantly, as the depicted urban boundaries exhibited a strong instance of spatial proximity, we employed a gravity model to understand the distance decay effects in shaping the delineated urban boundaries. The model explains how geographical distances found in the mobility patterns affect the interaction intensity among different non-administrative anthropographic urban areas, which provides new insights into human spatial interactions with urban space.
