[Termes IGN] valeur efficaceRésumé : (Auteur) This paper examines the performance of artificial neural networks (ANNs) as a method of spatial interpolation, when presented with irregular and regular samples of elevation data. The results of the ANN interpolation are compared with results obtained by kriging. Tests of spatial bias in the systematic errors contained in each of the neural network-derived DEMs were conducted using four attributes: slope, aspect, average direction and average distance from the nearest sampled value. Based on RMS and other evaluation measures, the accuracy of estimated DEMs from regular and irregular sample distributions using neural networks is lower than the accuracy level derived from kriging. The accuracy level of the ANN interpolators also decreases as the range of elevation values in DEMs increases. As reported in the literature, ANNs are approximate interpolators, and the pattern of under-prediction and over-prediction of elevation values in this study revealed that all estimated values fell within the range of sample elevations. Neural networks cannot predict values outside the range of elevation values contained in the sample, a property shared by other interpolators such as inverse weighted distance. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a coupling strategy based on Component Object Model (COM) technology, for performing spatial analysis within a GIS. The strategy involves using a module which simultaneously manipulates software components from the GIS application and the data analysis application. We illustrate the strategy using an extension, written for the proprietary GIS ArcInfo, which performs areal interpolation, a statistical method of basis change commonly required by users of socioeconomic data. The extension creates an instance of a statistics package and uses it to process GIS data stored in ArcInfo, and then passes the resulting information back to ArcInfo where it is stored in a standard attribute table. This coupling strategy can, of course, be used with other COMcompliant GIS and data analysis software. COM-compliant software allows GIS analysts and researchers to create custom-tailored applications using components from many different sources. Because the GIS does not rely on a proprietary macro language for customization there is a potential increase in access to spatial analysis tools which were previously difficult to link with a GIS, and we explore and evaluate the potential of the coupling strategy presented here for the GIS and spatial analysis research community. [Termes IGN] précision de localisationRésumé : (Auteur) Modeling line or surface phenomena digitally involves two tasks : discretization of the phenomenon, which yields a finite set of data, and subsequent interpolation, which reconstructs the continuum. Many mathematical techniques exist for the latter task, and most methods require a number of parameters to be specified. The shape of digital line or surface models between the data points (that is, the local shape) and the information derived from these models both depend on the selected method and, possibly, on the specification of parameters. The reconstruction of the continuum thus introduces uncertainty. This paper examines the sources and effects of this type of uncertainty. For this purpose, the modeling of lines and surfaces is separated into an abstraction, an implementation, and measurement. The individual factors affecting uncertainty of local shape in each step are identified and discussed. The paper concludes that local shape uncertainty, unlike positional uncertainty of given data, cannot be numerically assessed. Instead, measures of plausibility have to be used to denote the quality of digital models of lines and surfaces. Finally, the concept and potential problems of future empirical investigations are discussed. [Termes IGN] interpolation spatialeRésumé : (Auteur) Dasymetric maps display statistical data in meaningful spatial zones. Such maps can be preferable to choropleth maps that show data by enumeration zones, because dasymetric zones more accurately represent underlying data distributions. Though dasymetric mapping has existed for well over a century, the methods for producing these maps have not been thoroughly examined. In contrast, research on areal interpolation has been more thorough and has examined methods of transferring data from one set of map zones to another, an issue that is applicable to dasymetric mapping. Inspired by this work, we tested five dasymetric mapping methods, including methods derived from work on areal interpolation. Dasymetric maps of six socio-economic variables were produced for a study area of 159 counties in the eastern US rising county choropleth data and ancillary land-use data. Both polygonal (vector) and grid (raster) dasymetric methods were tested. We evaluated map accuracy using both statistical analyses and visual presentations of error. A repeated-measures analysis of variance showed that the traditional limiting variable method had significantly lower error than the other four methods. In addition, polygon methods had lower error than their grid-based counterparts, though the difference was not statistically significant. Error maps largely supported the conclusions from the statistical analysis, while also presenting patterns of error that were not obvious from the statistics.
