[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message: Intra-annual oxygen isotope patterns of tree-ring cellulose from Pinus nigra subsp. laricio and Pinus pinaster along an elevation gradient can be divided into four distinct patterns ((1) high values in the beginning of the tree ring, declining trend afterwards; (2) low values in the beginning, increasing trend afterwards; (3) high values in the middle of the tree ring; (4) declining trend over the whole tree ring). These patterns reflect the dependency on local site conditions and different water sources.
Context: Intra-annual oxygen isotope chronologies from tree-ring cellulose can serve as a proxy for past climate conditions at inter- or even intra-seasonal resolution.
Aims: We explore the potential of these chronologies from pine trees (Pinus nigra J.F. Arn subsp. laricio (Poiret) Maire var Corsicana Hyl. and Pinus pinaster Aiton) growing on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, France, along an elevation gradient ranging from sea level to 1600 m asl.
Methods: We developed high-resolution intra-annual oxygen isotope chronologies from tree-ring cellulose of eight trees from five sites along the elevation gradient. The analysis period covers the decade 2007–2016 for seven trees and the period 1987–2016 for one tree, respectively.
Results: The chronologies show a high variability between trees, sites, and years. We identified four different intra-annual oxygen isotope patterns which reflect the dependency of tree growth on different water sources (precipitation during the growing season vs. deeper soil water reservoirs) and climate conditions during the growth season. Trees at coastal sites have access to groundwater, while trees growing in high elevations mostly depend on precipitation during the growth season as water source.
Conclusion: The different patterns can be attributed to the use of different water sources. The intra-annual chronology covering 30 years indicates an increasing frequency of dry-warm summers after 2007.Numéro de notice : A2019-304 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-019-0860-9 date de publication en ligne : 29/07/2019 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-019-0860-9 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=93237

[Termes descripteurs IGN] Quercus pedunculataRésumé : (auteur) Previously, a large intra-specific diversity and a tight genetic control have been shown for Δ13C (carbon isotope discrimination) in a pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) family, which is an estimator for intrinsic water use efficiency (Wi), a complex trait defined as the ratio of net CO2 assimilation rate (A) to stomatal conductance for water vapour (gs). In the present study, twelve genotypes with extreme phenotypic values of Δ13C were selected within this family to (i) asses the stability of genotype differences across contrasting environments and for different measures Wi; (ii) quantify the relationship between Δ13C and Wi within this family; (iii) identify which leaf traits drive the diversity in Wi observed in this family. Genetic variability of Δ13C and Wi was largely independent from different temporal integration scales and their correlation was found to be strong (R2 = 88% for leaf sugars) within this family.
Weak correlations between measures of Wi with estimators of photosynthetic capacity, suggest a minor role of the latter in the diversity of Wi. However, the tight correlation between gs and Δ13C as well as Wi, and the related genotypic variation in stomatal density, suggest that the genotypic diversity in Wi within this pedunculate oak family might be due to differences in gs.Numéro de notice : A2009-656 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1051/forest/2009010 date de publication en ligne : 06/05/2009 En ligne : https://www.afs-journal.org/articles/forest/full_html/2009/04/f08120/f08120.html Format de la ressource électronique : url article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=72242

[Termes IFN] podzolRésumé : (auteur) Although accumulation of decomposing litter temporarily removes nutrients from active circulation, it creates a medium that is more suitable for nutrient uptake where soil conditions are unfavorable. A pot experiment was conducted using labeling of isotopically exchangeable phosphate ions of the soil and applying the dilution principle to accurately assess the contribution of the forest floor to P nutrition of maritime pine seedlings (Pinus pinaster Aït.). Three-week-old maritime pine seedlings were planted in pots containing either mineral soil (MS) or mineral soil covered with a forest floor layer (MS+FF). After 130 d, P uptake was still insignificant in the MS treatment while the P content of the seedlings in the MS+FF treatment increased tenfold with respect to the initial P content. In the latter treatment, the forest floor contributed 99.1% of the P supply to pine seedlings. The higher P uptake from the forest floor than from the mineral soil may be explained by its lower ability to retain inorganic P, which enabled a higher concentration of inorganic P to be maintained in solution. [Termes descripteurs IGN] phénologieRésumé : (auteur) Among the traits of breeding interest for the common walnut tree Juglans regia L., characteristics such as timing of budbreak and leaf fall, water-use efficiency and growth performance are regarded as being of utmost relevance in Mediterranean conditions. The authors evaluated intraspecific variation in δ13C (carbon isotope composition, surrogate of intrinsic water-use efficiency, WUEi) for 22 J. regia families grown in a progeny test under supplementary irrigation, and investigated whether such variation correlated with climatic indicators of native habitats. The genetic relationships between δ13C, growth and phenology were also assessed during two consecutive years. Overall, the most water-use-efficient families (i.e. with higher δ13C), which originated mainly from drought-prone provenance regions which have a high vapour pressure deficit and low rainfall, exhibited less height growth and smaller DBH. Using a stepwise regression procedure, δ13C was included as the main explanatory variable of genotypic variation in growth traits, together with growing season duration (for DBH in both years) and flushing (for height in 2007). It was concluded that WUEi is largely unconnected to phenology effects in the explanation of growth performance for J. regia, therefore suggesting the opportunity of simultaneously selecting for low WUEi and extended growing period to maximise productivity in non-water-limited environments. Note de contenu : SESSION I
