[Termes IGN] valeur propreRésumé : (Auteur) For the classification of pole‐like objects (trees, lamp posts, traffic lights and traffic signs) in mobile laser scanning (MLS) point clouds, a hierarchical classification method is proposed. The method consists of three major steps. (1) The objects’ cylindrical column sections are detected based on the characteristics of arc‐like points using RANSAC after denoising. (2) These detected objects are roughly classified into trees and man‐made poles based on the azimuthal coverage of point clouds above the cylindrical column. (3) Eigenvalue analysis and the principal direction of the upper pole projections are used to differentiate lamp posts, traffic lights and traffic signs. Experimental analysis shows that the method can effectively identify different types of pole‐like objects. [Termes IGN] transformation de HoughRésumé : (Auteur) Mobile LiDAR systems (MLS) are rapid and accurate technologies for acquiring three-dimensional (3D) point clouds that can be used to generate 3D models of road environments. Because manual extraction of desirable features such as road traffic signs, trees, and pavement markings from these point clouds is tedious and time-consuming, automatic information extraction of these objects is desirable. This paper proposes a novel automatic method to extract pavement lane markings (LMs) using point attributes associated with the MLS point cloud based on fuzzy inference. The proposed method begins with dividing the MLS point cloud into a number of small sections (e.g. tiles) along the route. After initial filtering of non-ground points, each section is vertically aligned. Next, a number of candidate LM areas are detected using a Hough Transform (HT) algorithm and considering a buffer area around each line. The points inside each area are divided into “probable-LM” and “non-LM” clusters. After extracting geometric and radiometric descriptors for the “probable-LM” clusters and analyzing them in a fuzzy inference system, true-LM clusters are eventually detected. Finally, the extracted points are enhanced and transformed back to their original position. The efficiency of the method was tested on two different point cloud datasets along 15.6 km and 9.5 km roadway corridors. Comparing the LMs extracted using the algorithm with the manually extracted LMs, 88% of the LM lines were successfully extracted in both datasets. [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (auteur) Safe roads are a necessity for any society because of the high social costs of traffic accidents. This challenge is addressed by a novel methodology that allows us to evaluate road safety from Mobile LiDAR System data, taking advantage of the road alignment due to its influence on the accident rate. Automation is obtained through an inductive reasoning process based on a decision tree that provides a potential risk assessment. To achieve this, a 3D point cloud is classified by an iterative and incremental algorithm based on a 2.5D and 3D Delaunay triangulation, which apply different algorithms sequentially. Next, an automatic extraction process of road horizontal alignment parameters is developed to obtain geometric consistency indexes, based on a joint triple stability criterion. Likewise, this work aims to provide a powerful and effective preventive and/or predictive tool for road safety inspections. The proposed methodology was implemented on three stretches of Spanish roads, each with different traffic conditions that represent the most common road types. The developed methodology was successfully validated through as-built road projects, which were considered as “ground truth.”

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate assessments of forest resources rely on ground truth data that are collected via in-situ measurements, which are fundamental for all other statistical- and/or remote-sensing-based deductions on quantified forest attributes. The major bottleneck of the current in-situ observation system is that the data collection is time consuming, and, thus, limited in extent, which potentially biases any further inferences made. Consequently, conventional field-data-collection approaches can hardly keep pace with the coverage, scale and frequency required for contemporary and future forest inventories. In-situ measurements from mobile platforms seem to be a promising technique to solve this problem and are estimated at least 10 times faster than static techniques (e.g., terrestrial laser scanning, TLS) at the plot level. However, the mobile platforms are still at the very early stages of development, and it is unclear which three-dimensional (3D) forest measurements the mobile systems can provide and at what accuracy. This study presents a quantitative evaluation of the performance of mobile platforms in a variety of forest conditions and through a comparison with state-of-the-art static in-situ observations. Two mobile platforms were used to collect field data, where the same laser-scanning system was both mounted on top of a vehicle and wore by an operator. The static in-situ observation from TLS is used as a baseline for the evaluation. All point clouds involved were processed through the same processing chain and compared to conventional manual measurement. The evaluation results indicate that the mobile platforms can assess homogeneous forests as well as static observations, but they cannot yet assess heterogeneous forest as required by practical applications. The major challenge is twofold: mobile-data coverage and accuracy. Future research should focus on the robust registration techniques between strips, especially in complex forest conditions, since errors of data registration results in significant impacts on tree attributes estimation accuracy. In cases that the spatial inconstancy cannot be eliminated, attributes estimation in single strips, i.e., the multi-single-scan approach, is an alternative. Meanwhile, operator training deserves attention since the data quality from mobile platforms is partly determined by the operators’ selection of trajectory in the field.
