Statistical filtering and structural analysis methods are commonly used for this process. The structural analysis method performs well in identifying terrain structural edges, while it tends to discard the smooth morphology of a terrain surface. In addition, the filter that aims to reduce noise on a surface may over-smooth the terrain structural edges. Therefore, to preserve both the terrain structural edges and smooth morphology, we propose to combine the techniques of statistical filtering and structural analysis. Specifically, all the critical elevation points and structural edges are first detected from the DEM surface by using the structural analysis method. Then, the iterative guided normal filter is used to smooth the generalized DEM with the guidance of the structure of the original surface. After this process, the terrain structure is retained in the smooth surface of the DEM. The experimental results with a real-world dataset show that our method can inherit the merits of both structural analysis and statistical filter in preserving terrain features for multi-scale DEM representations. A wide range of features, including the spectral reflectance, vegetation indices (VIs), textural features based on the grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and textural features based on geostatistical semivariogram (GST) were extracted for classification, and their performance was evaluated with the RF variable importance measures. Results showed that the best segmentation quality was achieved using the SPOT image acquired in September, with a scale parameter of 40. The spectral reflectance and the GST had a stronger contribution to crop classification than the VIs and GLCM textures. A subset of 60 features was selected using the RF-based feature selection (FS) method, and in this subset, the near-infrared reflectance and the image acquired in August (jointing and heading stages) were found to be the best for crop classification. [Termes IGN] précision de la classificationRésumé : (Auteur) A new technique for predicting missing field boundaries was developed to increase the accuracy of per-field classification. This technique is based on a comparison of within-field modal land-cover proportion and local variance. Analysis was performed on 4-m and 20-m spatial resolution imagery derived from Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) data, to simulate the difference in land-cover classification accuracy between multispectral Ikonos and Satellite Pour l'Observation de ]a Terre (SPOT) High Resolution Visible (HRV) imager. Initially, per-pixel classification was performed, followed by per-field classification. The technique for detecting missing boundaries was then implemented, and per-field classification was carried out a second time using updated field boundary data. Finally, an accuracy assessment was performed. The results demonstrate that classification was significantly more accurate when the missing boundary flag was used, and that simulated Ikonos imagery was considerably more accurate for this purpose than simulated SPOT HRV imagery.
