[Termes IGN] Union EuropéenneRésumé : (Auteur) The Geographical Information & Geographical Information Systems (GI&GIS) project of the Joint Research Centre is actively involved in assisting in the creation of the European Spatial Data Infrastructure (ESDI), as well as in activities related to the conception, creation and harmonization of pan-European spatial databases relevant for the policies of the European Union (EU), mainly through the support and co-ordination of networks in various thematic fields. Remotely sensed datasets play an important role in the ESDI and it is argued that the creation of an ESDI will greatly impact the GI and the remote sensing communities alike. Hence the main objective of this paper is to make the remote sensing community familiar with the current developments at EU level. This paper also illustrates major issues related to the harmonization of existing national datasets or the creation of new ones having a European or pan-European extent. In particular, the following technical aspects are discussed : terrestrial reference systems, projection systems, core data definition and geospatial metadata. [Termes IGN] standard OGCRésumé : (Auteur) Geographical metadata are a crucial element for managing and using geographical information. So far, agreement has been reached on a metadata model that should be an international standard soon. Some issues still remain like the definition of application profiles based on this metadata model, which is still an ongoing effort from ISO. Others are usage issues like convincing actors of the necessity of contributing to the metadata effort. In this paper, we present a research which aims at demonstrating, in a limited context, the value of metadata. We focus on a specific application : a prototype of an enterprise portal to share contents, tools, services and know-how inside the Institut Géographique National (the French mapping agency). We called it PARTAGE (french word for "sharing"). For the purpose of this application, we propose a metadata profile based on existing ISO and OGC standards. The first part of this paper introduces our general approach. User requirements are briefly presented in the next part. We then present the core models of the portal and the development of Web services it provides.
