[Termes IGN] reliefRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this research is to study the relationship between terrain complexity and terrain analysis results from grid-based digital elevation models (DEMs). The impact of terrain complexity represented by terrain steepness and orientation on derived parameters such as slope and aspect has been analysed. Experiments have been conducted to quantify the uncertainties created by digital terrain analysis algorithms. The test results show that (a) the RMSE of derived slope and aspect is negatively correlated with slope steepness; (b) the RMSE of derived aspect is more sensitive to terrain complexity than that of derived slope; and (c) the uncertainties in derived slope and aspect tend to be found in flatter areas, and decrease with increasing terrain complexity. The study shows that although primary surface parameters can be well defined mathematically, the implementation of those mathematical models in a GIS environment may generate considerable uncertainties related to terrain complexity. In general, when terrain is rugged with steep slopes, the uncertainty of derived parameters is quite minimal. While in flatter areas, the DEM-based derivatives, particularly the aspect, may contain a great amount of uncertainty, causing significant limitation in applying the analytical results. [Termes IGN] propagation d'erreurRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of our study was to characterize statistical and spatial details of the errors in a fine toposcale DEM derived by contour data. The fine toposcale DEMs are typically represented in a 5-50 m grid and used in the application scale 1:10000-1:50000. The errors were determined by using high-quality reference data covering the entire study area from an airborne laser scanner. The work was motivated because of the essential role played by the correct characterization of DEM error in error-propagation studies. The results showed that the spatial autocorrelation of the fine toposcale DEM error was the result of a complex combination of random and systematic-like components, and its appropriate modelling by geostatistical methods is problematic because of the small extent of the areas in which the assumption of stationarity is valid. In addition, describing the shape of the DEM error distribution was impossible with a single parameter of dispersion. This was due to a large number of outliers, which suggests that more robust descriptors of the error should be used in addition to conventional error statistics. [Termes IGN] système de numérisation mobileRésumé : (Auteur) Direct georeferencing, also referred to as direct platform orientation (DPO), is defined as direct measurement of the imaging sensor external orientation parameters (EOP), using positioning and orientation sensors, such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS) or Inertial Measurement Unit (Imu). Imaging sensors, most frequently supported by the Dpo technique, are digital cameras, lidar systems, multi-spectral or hyper-spectral scanners, or interferometric synthetic aperture radar (INSAR). While for scanning sensors, the use of Dpo is compulsory, frame digital cameras can also directly benefit from this modern technique of sensor orientation. With direct sensor orientation, the requirement for ground control, tie-point matching and aerotriangulation (AT) is significantly reduced, or even entirely eliminated, resulting in shorter times of data acquisition and processing, and streamlined and highly automated data workflow and quality control. Most of the time, the requirement for ground control points is limited to periodic system calibrations and quality control check. Direct georeferencing is considered a fundamental technology of conventional mobile mapping systems (MMS). Despite significant progress in GSP/INS-based direct georeferencing technology in the last decade, there is still room for improvement in terms of better accuracy and better tolerance to GPS outages. This paper is focused on three error modeling and compensation techniques that could potentially improve GPS/INS system's performance on both land-based and airborne platforms : (1) extended gravity compensation, (2) IMU signal de-noising, and (3) stochastic modeling of IMU errors.
