[Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) Developing reliable methods for representing and managing information uncertainty remains it persistent and relevant challenge to GIScience. Information uncertainty is an intricate idea, and recent examinations of this concept have generated many perspectives on its representation and visualization, with perspectives emerging from a wide range of disciplines and application contexts. In this paper, we review and assess progress toward visual tools and methods to help analysis manage and understand information uncertainty. Specifically, we report on efforts to conceptualize uncertainty, decision making with uncertainty, frameworks for representing uncertainty, visual representation and user control of displays of information uncertainty, and evaluative efforts to assess the use and usability of visual displays of uncertainty. We conclude by identifying seven key research challenges in visualizing information uncertainty, particularly as it applies to decision making and analysis. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents the results of a study aimed at assessing the effects of input uncertainty on the outcome of a raster-based model for structural landscape classification. The model uses a DEM and a land-cover map as input, and calculates four structural indices from these data. The first two indices determine the openness of the landscape, the other two determine the degree of landscape homogeneity. By combining both aspects, nine different landscape types are defined. Applying Monte Carlo simulation, the effect of DEM error, uncertainty in land-cover classification, and the combined effect of both sources of uncertainty on the outcome of the landscape model are assessed. Special attention is paid to the spatial structure of uncertainty in both data sources. [Termes IGN] simulationRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents a variant of p-field simulation that allows generation of spatial realizations through sampling of a set of conditional probability distribution functions (ccdf) by sets of probability values, called p-fields. Whereas in the common implementation of the algorithm the p-fields are non conditional realizations of random functions with uniform marginal distributions, they are here conditional to 0.5 probability values at data locations, which entails a preferential sampling of the central part of the ecdf around these locations. The approach is illustrated using a randomly sampled (200 observations of the NIR channel) SPOT scene of a semi-deciduous tropical forest. Results indicate that the use of conditional probability fields improves the reproduction of statistics such as histogram and semi-variogram, while yielding more accurate predictions of reflectance values than the common p-field implementation or the more CPU-intensive sequential indicator simulation. Pixel values are then classified as forest or savannah depending on whether the simulated reflectance value exceeds a given threshold value. In this case study, the proposed approach leads to a more precise and accurate prediction of the size of contiguous areas covered by savannah than the two other simulation algorithms.
