Despite significant advances during the satellite era, the monitoring of the mass changes of glaciers is still hampered by a fragmented coverage of remote sensing estimations and a poor constraint of the errors in related assessments. In this thesis, we present a globally complete and resolved estimate of glacier mass changes by spatiotemporal analysis of digital elevation models. We first develop methods based on spatiotemporal statistics to assess the accuracy and precision of digital elevation models, and to estimate time series of glacier surface elevation. In particular, we introduce a non-stationary spatial framework to estimate and propagate multi-scale spatial correlations in uncertainties of geospatial estimates. We then massively generate digital elevation models from two decades of stereo optical archives covering glaciers worldwide. From those, we estimate time series of surface elevation for all of Earth's glaciers at a resolution of 100 m during 2000-2019. Integrating these time series into volume and mass changes, we identify a significant acceleration of global glacier mass loss, as well as regionally contrasted responses that mirror decadal changes in climatic conditions. Using a large amount of independent, high-precision data, we demonstrate the validity of our analysis to yield reliable and consistent uncertainties at different scales of the spatiotemporal structure of our estimates. We expect our methods to foster robust spatiotemporal analyses, in to identify sources of biases and uncertainties in geospatial assessments. Furthermore, we anticipate our estimates to advance the understanding of the drivers that govern glacier change, and to extend our capabilities of predicting these changes at all scales. Such predictions are critically needed to design adaptive policies on the mitigation of cryospheric impacts in the context of climate change. Note de contenu : General introduction

[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) This research paper proposes a new five-step protocol to enhance the result of existing cloud removal algorithms using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) daily snow cover products (SCPs). The study has been carried out for the upper Bhagirathi basin (up to Maneri Hydropower Project) located in the Western Himalaya. Gafurov and Bárdossy test employed to validate the performance of the proposed method, followed by comparing with the field observed snow cover duration (SCD) data. The result shows that the mean overall accuracy of the proposed method for cloud removal is about ∼95%. However, the cloud removal method by Gafurov and Bardossy also achieved similar mean overall accuracy but with the higher variability within the individual images as compared with the variability within the results obtained by the proposed method. SCD computed from cloud removed SCPs matched significantly with the field observed SCD for a point location, supporting the accuracy achieved by the cloud removal method. This study also examines the spatiotemporal variability of the snow cover in the study area during the past 18 years (2000–2018). During the observation period, no specific trend was observed for annual maximum snow cover, while yearly minimum snow cover in the basin showed an increasing trend since 2010. Seasonally, December and June month witnessed significant changes. December experienced a declining trend in snow cover between 3000–6000 m a.s.l. covering 88% of the basin area, whereas, June showed an increasing trend between 4500 to 6000 m (a.s.l.). This elevation range covers 61% of the basin area, including core 86% of the glacier area within the basin. September and October experienced the highest inter-annual snow cover variability. Maximum snow cover month of February and minimum snow cover month of August experienced the least variability. The present study suggests significant elevation-dependent increasing as well as the decreasing trend in the snow cover with seasonal contrast, which may affect the glaciers as well as the hydrological behavior of the basin. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (auteur) This article explores the advantages and limitations of open-source digital elevation models (DEMs) generated from various acquisition methods and at various spatial resolutions, through extracting geomorphic surface remnants in a semi-arid, mountainous topographic environment. Even if the tested models have well-known vertical accuracy and precision, their reliability for peak detection is still waiting to be studied. In this research, we investigate peaks as remnants of degraded geomorphic surfaces. Peaks of surface remnants can help to reconstruct geomorphic surfaces and evaluate DEM applicabilities, since they can enhance the identification of overall accuracy. Our methodology uses a well-known open-source GRASS GIS Geomorphons module (r.geomorphon) on several recently released and widely used DEMs covering the Desatoya Mountains study area. We conclude that, despite the characteristic differences in the accuracy of the analyzed DEMs, all of those examined proved to be appropriate to detect surface remnants. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (auteur) German Aerospace Centre released TanDEM-X 90 m (TDM90) global digital elevation model (GDEM) as freely available in October, 2018 and declared that it describes all Earth’s landmasses pole to pole with 1 m absolute height accuracy which could not been achieved by previous space-borne GDEMs. In this study, the coherence level of TDM90 with SRTM90 and ASTER90 were comprehensively analysed by visual and statistical comparison approaches in two study areas including different topographic characteristics. In visual approaches, colour-scaled coherence maps, contour maps, aspects depending on ascending and descending flying orbits and outlier illustrations were generated and interpreted. In statistical approaches, horizontal and vertical absolute and relative geolocation disparities and frequency distributions of height differences were presented. The results demonstrated that the terrain slope has a great impact on the coherence levels between TDM90 and compared GDEMs. Overall, TDM90 is more coherent with SRTM90 against ASTER90 except clear dissimilarity problems in strip border lines. [Termes IGN] Tsinghai (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) The glaciers in the Qilian mountains are a major water resource for the arid Hexi corridor and Qaidam basin. With the climate becoming warmer and wetter, it is essential to study the glacier elevation changes in this region. We used TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X images, SRTM DEM data and differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry (DInSAR) technology to analyse the glacier elevation change. Results show that the glacier elevation is changing at the rate of –0.35 m yr−1 in the western Qilian mountains between 2000 and 2014. The glacier elevation thinning at –0.40 m yr−1 in the southern part of this region is more severe than that in the northern part (–0.29 m yr−1). The long-term equilibrium line altitude, calculated from glacier elevation change in each elevation bin, was at 5150 m, which is equal to that inferred from glacial area distribution in each elevation bin. Glacier shrinkage is related to air temperature increasing.
