[Termes IGN] séparateur à vaste margeRésumé : (auteur) Open global digital elevation models (GDEMs) represent a free and important source of information that is available to any country. Fusion processing between global and national digital elevation models is neither easy nor inexpensive. Hence, an alternative solution to fuse a GDEM (GTOPO30 or SRTM 1) with national GPS/levelling measurements is adopted. Herein, a transformation process between the GDEMs and national GPS/levelling measurements is applied using parametric and non-parametric equations. Two solutions are implemented before and after the filtration of raw data from outliers to assess the ability of the generated corrector surface model to absorb the effect of the outliers’ existence. In addition, a reliability analysis is conducted to select the most suitable transformation technique. We found that when both the fitting and prediction properties have equal priority, least-squares collocation integrated with a least-squares support vector machine inherited with a linear or polynomial kernel function exhibits the most accurate behavior. For the GTOPO30 model, before filtration of the raw data, there is an improvement in the mean and root mean square of errors by 39.31 % and 68.67 %, respectively. For the SRTM 1 model, the improvement in mean and root mean square values reached 86.88 % and 75.55 %, respectively. Subsequently, after the filtration process, these values became 3.48 % and 36.53 % for GTOPO30 and 85.18 % and 47.90 % for SRTM 1. Furthermore, it is found that using a suitable mathematical transformation technique can help increase the precision of classic GDEMs, such as GTOPO30, making them to be equal or more accurate than newer models, such as SRTM 1, which are supported by more advanced technologies. This can help overcome the limitation of shortage of technology or restricted data, particularly in developed countries. Henceforth, the proposed direct transformation technique represents an alternative faster and more economical way to utilize unfiltered measurements of GDEMs to estimate national digital elevations in areas with limited data. [Termes IGN] puits de carboneRésumé : (Auteur) The knowledge of biomass stocks in tropical forests is critical for climate change and ecosystem services studies. This research was conducted in a tropical rain forest located near the city of Libreville (the capital of Gabon), in the Akanda Peninsula. The forest cover was stratified in terms of mature, secondary and mangrove forests using Landsat-ETM data. A field inventory was conducted to measure the required basic forest parameters and estimate the aboveground biomass (AGB) and carbon over the different forest classes. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data were used in combination with ground-based GPS measurements to derive forest heights. Finally, the relationships between the estimated heights and AGB were established and validated. Highest biomass stocks were found in the mature stands (223 ± 37 MgC/ha), followed by the secondary forests (116 ± 17 MgC/ha) and finally the mangrove forests (36 ± 19 MgC/ha). Strong relationships were found between AGB and forest heights (R2 > 0.85). [Termes IGN] modèle numérique de surfaceRésumé : (Auteur) Satellite images provide spatially explicit information on forest change covering wide areas. In this study, bistatic TanDEM-X (TDX) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite data were used to derive digital surface models (DSMs) of forest areas using SAR interferometry (InSAR). The capability of change features derived from bi-temporal InSAR DSMs to detect forest height (90th percentile of canopy height distribution, H90) and density variations was investigated. Moreover, changes in the forest above-ground biomass (AGB) were estimated from height changes between two InSAR DSMs. Bi-temporal airborne laser scanning (ALS) data, aerial orthoimages and an ALS-based AGB change map from a study area in Southern Finland were used as references. The results indicate that the InSAR height change of a forested area correlates more with vegetation density change than with height change. The correlation between the InSAR mean height change and the height change feature from ALS was 0.76 at stand level. Correspondingly, the correlation between the InSAR mean height change and the ALS penetration rate change was 0.89. The AGB changes predicted based on InSAR height change agreed well with the reference data; the root-mean-square error (RMSE) was 20.7 Mg/ha (18.5% of the mean biomass in 2012) at stand level and 27.4 Mg/ha (27.0%) for 16 × 16 m grid cells. The results show that TDX DSMs can be used to detect biomass changes of different orders of magnitude, e.g. due to logging and thinning. [Termes IGN] précision de localisationRésumé : (Auteur) The primary goal of the German TanDEM-X mission is the generation of a highly accurate and global Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with global accuracies of at least 10 m absolute height error (linear 90% error). The global TanDEM-X DEM acquired with single-pass SAR interferometry was finished in September 2016. This paper provides a unique accuracy assessment of the final TanDEM-X global DEM using two different GPS point reference data sets, which are distributed across all continents, to fully characterize the absolute height error. Firstly, the absolute vertical accuracy is examined by about three million globally distributed kinematic GPS (KGPS) points derived from 19 KGPS tracks covering a total length of about 66,000 km. Secondly, a comparison is performed with more than 23,000 “GPS on Bench Marks” (GPS-on-BM) points provided by the US National Geodetic Survey (NGS) scattered across 14 different land cover types of the US National Land Cover Data base (NLCD). Both GPS comparisons prove an absolute vertical mean error of TanDEM-X DEM smaller than ±0.20 m, a Root Means Square Error (RMSE) smaller than 1.4 m and an excellent absolute 90% linear height error below 2 m. The RMSE values are sensitive to land cover types. For low vegetation the RMSE is ±1.1 m, whereas it is slightly higher for developed areas (±1.4 m) and for forests (±1.8 m). This validation confirms an outstanding absolute height error at 90% confidence level of the global TanDEM-X DEM outperforming the requirement by a factor of five. Due to its extensive and globally distributed reference data sets, this study is of considerable interests for scientific and commercial applications.
