[Termes IGN] niche écologiqueRésumé : (auteur) Biodiversity is declining globally at unprecedented rates. Ecological niche mod-els (ENMs) are one of the most widely used toolsets to appraise global changeimpacts on biodiversity. Here, we identify a variety of advantages of incorporat-ing remotely sensed ecosystem functioning attributes (EFAs) into ENMs. Thedevelopment of ENMs that explicitly incorporate ecosystem functioning willallow a more holistic and integrative perspective of the habitat dynamics. Thesynergies between the increasingly available open-access satellite images andcloud-based platforms for planetary-scale geospatial analysis offer an unprece-dented opportunity to incorporate ecosystem processes and disturbances (suchas fires, insect outbreaks or droughts) that have been so far largely neglected inecological niche characterization and modelling. The most paradigmatic exam-ple of EFAs is the application of time series of spectral vegetation indicesrelated to primary productivity and carbon cycle. EFAs related to surface energybalance and water cycles derived from remote sensing products such as landsurface temperature or soil moisture enable a fine-scale characterization of thespecies’ niche—eventually improving the predictive performance of ENMs. Allthese advantages confirm that a new generation of ENMs based on such EFAswould offer great perspectives to increase our ability to monitor habitat suit-ability trends and population dynamics. However, despite the technicaladvances and increasing effort of remote sensing community to develop inte-grative EFAs, ENMs have yet to make full profit of the most recent develop-ments by integrating them in ENMs. A coordinated agenda for remote sensingexperts and ecological modellers will be essential over the coming years tobridge the gap between remote sensing and ecology disciplines and to take full(and timely) advantage of the fast-growing body of Earth observation data andremote sensing technologies—with special emphasis on the development andtesting of new variables related to key processes driving ecosystem functioning. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In a mixed, Fagus sylvatica L.- Acer pseudoplatanus L., young plantation, trees of both species absorbed water from superficial soil layers despite the presence of roots and water in deeper layers. Admixture proportion and tree density were weak predictors of water acquisition depth, as well as fine root vertical distribution, although it might be due to distinct periods of root and isotope investigations.
Promoting mixed forests and reducing stand densities have been proposed as effective ways to maintain the productivity of temperate planted forest stands in a changing climate.
The objective of this study was to analyse how stand density and the degree of admixture of European beech and sycamore maple interactively influenced the water acquisition profile of individual trees. We used a stable isotope (deuterium) approach to determine the profiles of soil water acquisition of both species in a 16-year-old plantation where trees had been planted along crossed gradients of tree density and species proportion. The profiles were then compared with the vertical distribution of fine root of these species in the plantation. All the target trees mostly absorbed soil water from the first few centimetres of soil despite homogenous vertical water availability and the fact that a great part of the fine root biomass was located below 10 cm. Admixture proportion and tree density had negligible effects on soil water acquisition depth. No vertical differentiation of soil water acquisition between the two species was observed, suggesting that mixing these species does not promote reduction of belowground competition for resource acquisition. The vertical distribution of fine root may be a weak predictor of water acquisition depth.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) We compared results derived using three different approaches to assess the suitability of common tree species on the Franconian Plateau in southern Germany under projected warmer and drier climate conditions in the period 2061-2080. The study area is currently a relatively warm and dry region of Germany. We calculated species distribution models (SDMs) using information on species’ climate envelopes to predict regional species spectra under 63 different climate change scenarios. We complemented this with fine-scale ecological niche analysis using data from 51 vegetation surveys in seven forest reserves in the study area, and tree-ring analysis (TRA) from local populations of five tree species to quantify their sensitivity to climatic extreme years. The SDMs showed that predicted future climate change in the region remains within the climate envelope of certain species (e.g. Quercus petraea), whilst for e.g. Fagus sylvatica, future climate conditions in one third of the scenarios are too warm and dry. This was confirmed by the TRA: sensitivity to drought periods is lower for Q. petraea than for F. sylvatica. The niche analysis shows that the local ecological niches of Quercus robur and Fraxinus excelsior are mainly characterized by soils providing favorable water supply than by climate, and Pinus sylvestris (planted) is strongly influenced by light availability. The best adapted species for a warmer and potentially drier climate in the study region are Acer campestre, Sorbus torminalis, S. aria, Ulmus minor, and Tilia platyphyllos, which should therefore play a more prominent role in future climate-resilient mixed forest ecosystems. [Termes IGN] population animaleRésumé : (Auteur) Species’ potential distribution modelling is the process of building a representation of the fundamental ecological requirements for a species and extrapolating these requirements into a geographical region. The importance of being able to predict the distribution of species is currently highlighted by issues like global climate change, public health problems caused by disease vectors, anthropogenic impacts that can lead to massive species extinction, among other challenges. There are several computational approaches that can be used to generate potential distribution models, each achieving optimal results under different conditions. However, the existing software packages available for this purpose typically implement a single algorithm, and each software package presents a new learning curve to the user. Whenever new software is developed for species’ potential distribution modelling, significant duplication of effort results because many feature requirements are shared between the different packages. Additionally, data preparation and comparison between algorithms becomes difficult when using separate software applications, since each application has different data input and output capabilities. This paper describes a generic approach for building a single computing framework capable of handling different data formats and multiple algorithms that can be used in potential distribution modelling. The ideas described in this paper have been implemented in a free and open source software package called openModeller. The main concepts of species’ potential distribution modelling are also explained and an example use case illustrates potential distribution maps generated by the framework.
