[Termes IGN] reconstruction d'objetRésumé : (auteur) This paper presents a novel approach to recover true fine surface detail of deforming meshes reconstructed from multi-view video. Template-based methods for performance capture usually produce a coarse-to-medium scale detail 4D surface reconstruction which does not contain the real high-frequency geometric detail present in the original video footage. Fine scale deformation is often incorporated in a second pass by using stereo constraints, features, or shading-based refinement. In this paper, we propose an alternative solution to this second stage by formulating dense dynamic surface reconstruction as a global optimization problem of the densely deforming surface. Our main contribution is an implicit representation of a deformable mesh that uses a set of Gaussian functions on the surface to represent the initial coarse mesh, and a set of Gaussians for the images to represent the original captured multi-view images. We effectively find the fine scale deformations for all mesh vertices, which maximize photo-temporal-consistency, by densely optimizing our model-to-image consistency energy on all vertex positions. Our formulation yields a smooth closed form energy with implicit occlusion handling and analytic derivatives. Furthermore, it does not require error-prone correspondence finding or discrete sampling of surface displacement values. We demonstrate our approach on a variety of datasets of human subjects wearing loose clothing and performing different motions. We qualitatively and quantitatively demonstrate that our technique successfully reproduces finer detail than the input baseline geometry. [Termes IGN] toitRésumé : (Auteur) Three-dimensional (3D) building models are essential for 3D Geographic Information Systems and play an important role in various urban management applications. Although several light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data-based reconstruction approaches have made significant advances toward the fully automatic generation of 3D building models, the process is still tedious and time-consuming, especially for massive point clouds. This paper introduces a new framework that utilizes a spatial database to achieve high performance via parallel computation for fully automatic 3D building roof reconstruction from airborne LiDAR data. The framework integrates data-driven and model-driven methods to produce building roof models of the primary structure with detailed features. The framework is composed of five major components: (1) a density-based clustering algorithm to segment individual buildings, (2) an improved boundary-tracing algorithm, (3) a hybrid method for segmenting planar patches that selects seed points in parameter space and grows the regions in spatial space, (4) a boundary regularization approach that considers outliers and (5) a method for reconstructing the topological and geometrical information of building roofs using the intersections of planar patches. The entire process is based on a spatial database, which has the following advantages: (a) managing and querying data efficiently, especially for millions of LiDAR points, (b) utilizing the spatial analysis functions provided by the system, reducing tedious and time-consuming computation, and (c) using parallel computing while reconstructing 3D building roof models, improving performance. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Even maps that strive for a precise representation of spatial relationships use techniques of distortion to embed a geographic extent within a two-dimensional plane – be it a page or a screen. The graphical design of geospatial information does however conform to a consensus around the conceptual limits of that distortion, with an overall design framework that constrains the design to ensure comprehension and the effective recognition of geographic entities and relations. Although constraints are necessary, we argue that the advent of digital technology, particularly in mobile mapping, warrants re-examination of the parameters of these distortions. Here we introduce the concept of ‘the bounds of distortion’ as a device for considering the conceptual boundaries of map design, and as a foundation for further work to investigate how these bounds may be redefined to better support map users with more effective graphical information. The focus here is navigational information, and in particular urban navigation and interaction with the graphical representation of urban geography and public transport networks. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (Auteur) Findings of empirical studies of spatial memory using maps are direct responses to the successful transfer and processing of map information. The memory performance of map users is an important indication of the quality of a map design. Studies of spatial memory have mainly relied on recall performances, but maps can be used in various ways depending on the map user's task and applied strategy. Therefore, one memory paradigm does not cover the entire spectrum of options for examining the retrieval of map information. Three different experiments were designed to analyze and compare memory performances using different map information in recall and recognition (combining episodic and semantic memory) paradigms. The results demonstrate that map complexity, as varied by the amount of displayed map detail, contributes significantly to memory performance. Moreover, memory enhancement affected by map-structuring elements (grids) depends on the respective paradigm and also on the visual appearance of the structuring elements. Both paradigms for examining the influence of map information on cognitive processing can be applied specifically to analyze the efficiency of map designs. On the basis of the different effects of map information, a reasoned application of these paradigms to test map designs is indispensable.
